Babysitter's Blues Part 9
(Section 1 of the Project: Voyager trilogy)
by Jack Staik

--------------------

Janeway marched on towards the main deflector housing.

Behind her strode Seven of Nine and B'Ellana Torres (both
soaking wet) and Naomi Wildman (dressed all in black).

"But what would he need in the deflector housing anyway?"
B'Ellana asked.

"A way off the ship." Naomi stated.

Seven looked curiously at her. "Explain."

"When I saw Q studying the Borg data modules, he noticed how
a deflector was used to open a quantum singularity into
fluidic space." Naomi explained. "He's going to try to get
past the barrier his daddy put up by making a singularity."

"But that was a twenty-fourth century deflector! We've only
got a twenty-third century system." B'Ellana protested.

The door whooshed open, allowing the four females entrance.

"I think he's found a way around that." Janeway murmured.

Harry Kim was not enjoying Bridge duty.

Strange quantum fluctuations from the main deflector housing
were still destabilizing the ship. Tuvok, the Captain, and
Chief Engineer Torres were nowhere to be found. Pressure in
the water distribution system (which he didn't even know
they had) had dropped to zero.

As if things couldn't get any worse, the intercom signaled.
"Bridge," Harry answered.

"Ensign Inverse on Deck Eleven." she replied. "Commander
Chakotay and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok have been secured,
as has Ensign Paris."

"Tuvok? Paris? Why'd you secure them?"

"Captain's orders. Oh, and could you get the Doc down here
to look at the injuries? And evacuate Deck Ten."

Harry felt a headache building. "What injuries? And why do
we need to evacuate Deck Ten?"

"In the process of securing Tuvok, Paris, and Chakotay," she
explained matter-of-factly, "they suffered some minor
incidental injuries. I got the water out of Paris' lungs,
and dealt with the bat'leth wounds. Tuvok will probably need
to be treated for a second concussion. And Chakotay's jaw
seems to be dislocated."

" 'Incidental injuries,' " Harry muttered. "And what about
Deck Ten?"

"Oh, that." Lina replied casually. "Well, when chasing
Chakotay, some bulkheads and ceilings and support structures
on Deck Eleven were accidentally vaporized."

"Vaporized?" he asked weakly.

Over the intercom, a croak was heard. "Oh, there's Carey!
Gotta go!" and the whine of a phaser were all that Harry
heard before the link was cut.

Janeway, Torres, Seven, and Wildman stared up at the
construct that once was Voyager's main deflector. Now none
of them could really recognize anything but the most basic
components.

It had the semi-organic patterns of Borg technology; the
hard, clean lines of Federation science; and an odd, fluid
air that none could place.

Young Q looked on with satisfaction at his handiwork.

"Perfect." he said.

"I thought you didn't know how to create advanced
technology." Janeway stated.

Q turned to look at her. "Hello, Auntie Kathy. And I didn't,
until you made me study those Borg data modules. Now I can
make things like this." And he waved a hand at his new toy.

"And what is ... this?"

"A quantum singularity generator." Q said. With a flick of
his fingers, the huge device whined and groaned into
operation. On a nearby dais, within several suspended rings,
a flare of white light came into being.

"Unlike the singularity the Borg used to enter Fluidic
Space," Q continued, "this one has no particular
destination. So I can just step into it and find my heart's
desire, guided by my own subconscious." Q took an
opportunity to look smug. "Am I great or what?"

Naomi rushed up. "Q, don't go! Please! I don't have anyone
my own age to play with but Neelix, and he's really
immature."

"Sorry, Naomi, but I must find my One True Love." he glanced
over at Seven. "now that my first love has turned out to be
a faithless hussy."

"AND a man-stealing one, at that." B'Ellana added helpfully.

"This is pointless." Seven stated. She stepped over to Q.
"We will not allow you to leave."

Q waved his hand, and a small portion of the chemical in the
atmosphere realigned themselves into nitrous oxide. The
small environment suit he was suddenly wearing, of course,
had a pure oxygen supply.

A shudder passed through the ship; Q breaching the
singularity. The weakened structural supports on Deck Eleven
groaned. Several crew members on Deck Ten were abruptly
falling through the floor.

The evacuation was proceeding in an orderly fashion. Ensign
Golwat was leading crewmen to the safer Jeffries tubes when
she passed near the main deflector housing, and heard -
laughter?

The door slid open, and Seven and Torres stumbled out,
either dancing or trying to strangle each other.

"I'm going to kill you," Torres chortled.

"I don't want your man - his ass is too damn skinny," Seven
replied. Which caused both women to burst into racuous
laughter.

Janeway stumbled out, carry a black cloth bundle. "Oh Ensign
- good." Janeway said, with a lilt in her voice. "It seems
that whatever affected Seven and Torres has knocked out
Naomi. I don't seem to be affected." She looked over at the
Bolian. "Did you know you're blue?" she said and started
laughing.

The whine of a phaser vaporizing matter was heard, as a
nearby wall gave way under the bombardment of two hand
phasers. Out of the hole, Ensign Inverse stepped, an
unconscious tree-frog held by its ankle in her teeth.

"Ib grot Carey," she said. "now bwhat?"

"I understand they taste good pickled," Janeway commented.

Seven, Janeway, and Torres started to laugh even harder.

Inverse looked on blankly.

Ensign Golwat vomited, which made Seven, Torres, and the
Captain laugh harder.

"Captain's Log: Ensign Harry Kim recording;

"Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Torres, and Seven of Nine are
once more lucid after this afternoon's <ahem> incidents.
The nitrous oxide only intoxicated them, but the Doctor is
keeping them in Sick Bay until tomorrow morning for
observation.

"Ensign Golwat is also making a complete recovery.
Ap[parently, nitrous oxide acts as a regurgitant on Bolians.
Naomi Wildman's half-Ktarian physiology was just knocked out
by the gas - she has suffered no lasting effects.

"Ensign Paris and Commander Tuvok required minor surgery.
Tuvok has been removed from the active duty roster pending a
psychiatric review.

"Ensign Inverse has been locked in the brig, pending court-
martial.

"Decks Ten and Eleven are being repaired - replaced
actually. A crew is still examining the alterations Q made
to the main deflector.

"Commander Chakotay and Lieutenant Carey have been examined
by the Doctor, who has found their original DNA patterns
intact. With genetic alteration therapy, the Doctor
estimates that they should both be back to duty in less than
a year.

"In the meantime, since I had the Bridge when this all
began, I'm in command of Voyager. Me.

"Feels good."
