                             Green Lantern Ranma

Disclaimer: Green Lantern and Ranma are all figments of someone's
imagination so let's not get excited over petty details.

                                  Chapter 3

                               Green with Envy

<Do I really have to go to school? > Ranma mentally asked his ring as he
streaked across the Pacific Ocean from the tropical island where he had
spent a good portion of his childhood years while on Earth. He was currently
in his Green Lantern uniform and traveling at Mach 10 at an altitude of
50,000 feet above sea level. Slung over his shoulder was a carrying bag with
his school supplies and lunch. Since he was encased in a protective field of
energy, his things were not affected by air friction. <Why can't I just keep
on taking lessons from you? I mean, I already know more stuff than any other
high school student. >

<True. > The ring replied as they approached the coastline of Japan's main
island of Honshu. <However, now that you have returned to the world of your
birth, I believe that it would do you some good to associate with others
that are similar to your age and get more acquainted with Earth. Some of the
social skills that you acquired during our travels through the cosmos may
not apply here. In any case, this will be an excellent opportunity to rest a
bit and just live as a normal Terran. You can't be Green Lantern all the
time. I've already made the necessary arrangements and enrolled you in a
high school in a district called Juuban. Oh, and I've registered you under a
new name. >

<A new name? What's wrong with Ranma Saotome? >

<Well, as far as the world is concerned, Ranma Saotome disappeared when I
pulled you out of that cat pit six years ago and as of now, you are presumed
missing or deceased. And after what I had shown you of what your father had
done when he took care of you... I'm pretty certain that you'd rather avoid
all those engagements, promises and crimes that are connected to the Saotome
name, right?>

Ranma shuddered as bit at the memory of that cat pit, and nodded. He hadn't
liked what Genma had put him through and couldn't believe he was that much
of an idiot.

The ring continued on. <In any case, I've chosen the name of Ranma Sur. >

<Sur? >

<Yes. I happen to have the records of the names of all the Green Lanterns
that ever lived. Abin Sur was the last Green Lantern that was assigned to
Sector 2814. He was a fine space patrolman and I think that it is quite
fitting that you take his name. >

Ranma thought about the name change and tested it on his lips. <Ranma Sur...
I guess that's okay. >

<Good. Oh, by the way Ranma, you'd better slow down. Our ETA to Japan is in
two minutes and at the speed you're going , you'll overshoot Honshu. >

The teen nodded as he decelerated to a velocity just under 300 mph. He also
began making his descent toward Japan and landed in downtown Tokyo.

At the Masaki residence...

Washu grumbled as her scanners once again lost the signal after picking it
up over the Pacific Ocean. Apparently, the Green Lantern didn't want to be
tracked and was doing a damn good job of masking his energy signature when
he was near Japan. As of now, she lost the signal when he entered Japan's
airspace.

Washu was quite capable of inventing devices that could mimic the energy
manipulation abilities of a Green Lantern's Power Ring, but they required
tremendous amounts of power and were quite large. Also, the rings were
capable of creating solid energy constructs, matter-energy conversion,
wide-spectrum energy scanning, and a huge variety of other abilities, as
well as granted the wielder unlimited space travel. It was the ultimate
Swiss Army Knife. The fact that all that power that could be stored and
channeled through that one tiny ring was nothing short of phenomenal. The
energy that was stored in a Green Lantern's ring was said to be limitless.
It was even rumored to be equal to the godlike abilities of the Jurai Royal
Family. Of course, since that power was derived from the original Guardians
of the Universe, that could only be expected.

Oh yes, Washu could duplicate each of the ring's abilities, but to have one
tiny device do all those things and a great deal more was what made her so
intrigued. When the Green Lanterns died out centuries ago, there were no
rings for the mad scientist to study and reproduce, until now. Furthermore,
the rings were created to be wielded by only very special individuals. She
was more than eager to get a hold of the ring and her green-colored guinea
pig.

Washu sighed as she set her instruments to standby and went to speak with
the others.

----------

"What? A Green Lantern? What's a Green Lantern?" Tenchi asked as he and his
family were discussing about person who had saved the Earth from destruction
from a comet. Opposite to them were the Galaxy policewomen Mihoshi and
Kiyone. Above them, sitting on an overhead beam was the space pirate Ryoko.
Sitting on the couch opposite to Tenchi and his father were the Jurian
princesses Ayeka and Sasami. The younger princess was holding the cabbit
Ryo-ohki in her arms.

Yosho nodded as he began explaining to his grandson. "Several centuries ago,
there were some very powerful beings known as the Guardians of the Universe.
They were ancient even before the time of the Jurai Royal Family. They were
the caretakers of the cosmos, but even they couldn't monitor the entire
space-time continuum and the countless races and civilizations. Therefore,
they created an kind of police force in which a being that was native to
each sector was selected to wield a Power Ring."

"A Power Ring? Was that the thing that destroyed the comet?" Tenchi asked.

Ayeka nodded as she picked up on the story. "That's right Lord Tenchi. It
was said that a Power Ring was directed by the sheer willpower of its
wielder. It was able to do virtually anything and could mold energy into any
form or shape, much like the Light Hawk Wings. It was rumored that a Green
Lantern's Ring was the most powerful weapon ever to be created for a single
individual. However, the Power Rings shared one weakness that was known
throughout the cosmos."
"Weakness?"
"Yes. They had no effect on anything that was yellow." Yosho remarked, but
then took a slightly puzzled look. "Though I do not understand how this
Green Lantern was able to stop that comet, since it contained many
yellow-colored ores and light."

"So how was he able to stop the comet?"
It was then that Washu entered the room. "If my estimates are correct (and
they always are), I have a feeling that THIS Green Lantern is using some new
prototype Power Ring that will affect even yellow objects and energy. If
that's the case, then he truly is in possession of the greatest weapon in
the universe."

----------

Meanwhile, at a certain high school in Juuban...

"Class, as of today, we have a new transfer student. Please give a warm
welcome to Ranma Sur."

The class turned their attention to the tall boy who was standing at the
front of the classroom. Several of the girls gave him a appreciative gaze as
he smiled back and politely bowed.

Makoto took one look and sighed. He looked even better than her old sempai,
just like Green Lantern. Behind her, Minako, AKA Sailor Venus also became
interested in the newcomer.

"This young man placed very well in the test scores on his entrance exams,
scoring in the upper nineties. Math, science, history, English... a lot of
you could learn a great deal from him." The teacher gave Usagi a slight
frown before addressing the new student. "You may sit anywhere you wish,
Ranma."

As the leader of the Sailor Senshi and future ruler of Crystal Tokyo winced
a bit under the teacher's gaze, a certain blue-haired girl looked at the
newcomer with some interest. Ami thought that if Ranma really was that
smart, then perhaps he could make a good study partner. The fact that he was
cute was also a bonus. <Where did that come from? > Ami wondered.

Ranma nodded as he walked towards an empty seat near the center of the
classroom that was next to Ami and in front of Minako and Makoto. As he sat
down, he took a deep breath and gave a friendly wave to the students around
him as the teacher began the day's lesson.

Using a special cloaking field which hid it from sight, the Power Ring was
pleased to see that Ranma would have very little difficulty fitting in with
the other students. It was at that point that it began getting some very
strange energy readings from four girls that were sitting nearby. It then
began a quiet scan of each girl as the teacher droned on about the concepts
of Newton's Laws.

At the same time, Ami's computer began giving off some beeps as it began
detecting the ring's probing. The Power Ring then began modulating its
energies so that the device could not detect the scans.

The blue-haired girl was momentarily distracted when the computer in her
schoolbag began beeping, then suddenly stopped. She paused for a moment to
consider checking on it, then decided to do so later as she didn't want the
teacher or her other classmates to see it.

----------

<Man! I thought that class would never end! > Ranma said as he walked toward
a nearby bench in the schoolyard and sat down. The teacher had been very
knowledgeable in physics, but to Ranma, that lesson had been too easy. The
only difficulty he had in that class was trying to keep from falling asleep.

During the last six years, the Power Ring had tutored the young Green
Lantern not only in combat skills, but also in the principles of energy
manipulation, quantum physics, space-travel and a large variety of academic
subjects that would have earned him several Bachelor Degrees in Science,
Mathematics, Astronomy and Engineering. The ring's intelligence had
maintained that Ranma needed to know these subjects if he were to
effectively wield the energy-manipulating abilities of the ring. Though
Ranma was quite reluctant to learn, he eventually came around and agreed to
the studies. Unlike Genma's method of training, which only focused on the
martial arts, Ranma had received training in all subjects. As a Green
Lantern, Ranma would eventually encounter situations in which force may not
be the answer and he'd have to use that head of his. With a little
persuasion, (such as taunting Ranma and suggesting that he couldn't do it,
thereby challenging his ego), the young boy began giving his mind as intense
a training regimen as his body.

The entrance exams had been too easy for Ranma, but he didn't want to come
off as a total know-it-all, so he purposely made a few mistakes instead of
trying for perfect scores. The Ring had become a bit put off by Ranma's
actions, but since he still rated in the top nineties, there wasn't really
that much to complain about.

Ranma sighed as he opened the bento that he had brought with him and began
eating his lunch. It was at that moment that his Ring signaled to him
telepathically.

<Well Ranma, how do you feel about your first day of school so far? >

<It's okay I guess, though the classes aren't teaching me anything that I
don't already know. >

<Yes, I'll admit that the academic programs are a bit behind what you had
learned, but at least you have a chance to make some new friends. Speaking
of which, look to your right. >
Ranma peered through the corner of his eye and saw that three girls were
approaching his bench.

"Hi there. Are you all alone for lunch? Would you mind if we joined you?"
Makoto said as she and her friends smiled at him.

Ranma shrugged as he motioned them to sit. "I remember you three. You're all
from my science class, right?"

"Yeah, I'm Makoto and these are my friends Minako and Ami."
"Pleased to meet with you, Ranma." Ami greeted.

"Likewise." Minako added while giving Ranma her friendliest smile.

"So Ranma, now that we've introduced ourselves, we'd like to know more about
you." Makoto said. "So what are you into?"

"Well..." Ranma paused for a moment as he mentally assessed the three girls.
The tall one with the brown hair done up in a topknot ponytail had some
considerable martial arts skills and the Green Lantern could tell even
without his ring, she was a very good fighter. The one with long blond hair
seemed especially friendly. As for the blue-haired girl, she seemed a little
on the quiet side, but he could sense a sharp intelligence. "I'm into
martial arts myself."
Makoto perked up at the mention of this. "Martial arts? Cool! So am I! Maybe
we can get together and practice sometime!"

"Uh, sure..." Ranma was a little unused to fighting the opposite sex, though
the ring had trained him to deal with all types of opponents. "Maybe later."

Ranma and the three girls had a very quiet conversation during the lunch
hour as the Inner Senshi asked their new classmate about his likes,
dislikes, his hobbies and so on. Eventually, their conversation went to the
subject of the Green Lantern and what Ranma thought about Tokyo's newest
superhero sensation. At the same time, Ranma started to become comfortable
as he talked with the girls, though he was a bit edgy discussing his other
identity. Despite that, it seemed that he would fit in well to civilian
life. However, it seemed that fate would intervene as trouble reared its
ugly head.

A huge explosion was heard from somewhere in the middle of downtown Tokyo.
Ranma's ring began giving him warning signals through its telepathic link
with its wielder, telling him that Green Lantern was needed.

Police cars began racing down the street and passed the school, alerting the
Sailor Senshi in their civilian identities. They each gave her compatriots a
nod as they knew that something was up and may need the help of their
alter-egos. They all turned to give Ranma an excuse to leave, but saw that
they didn't have to as he was already long gone.

----------

On top of the school roof, Ranma's Power Ring revealed itself and triggered
the transformation of his clothes into the uniform of the Green Lantern. The
ring flashed and started morphing the school uniform at the end of the right
sleeve. A green light traveled along the arm, changing the fabric from dark
blue to the green and black costume of Ranma's role as a protector of the
cosmos. The mask appeared on the teen's face as the emblem materialized on
his chest. The pants and shoes were melded together to form the rest of the
uniform and boots. A final flash of emerald light and the Green Lantern
rocketed upward into the sky.

----------

The police officers had the entire building surrounded, but the bank robbers
within had at least a dozen hostages and a bomb. Two of the bank guards had
been seriously wounded in the exchange and were in serious need of medical
attention. The tellers and customers were all huddled in the back near the
vault as the robbers were out front, shouting out demands to the police and
threatening to detonate the bomb they had in their possession. They had
already tossed out one hand grendade to keep the police at bay.

It was at that moment that the Sailor Mercury, Venus and Jupiter all
appeared in an alley near the bank.

"It's a bank robbery and it looks like there's a hostage situation!" Mercury
remarked as she saw all the police cars and the officers with their guns
trained on the front of the bank.

"This doesn't look like anything to do with youma, the Negaverse, Pure Heart
Crystals or anything like that we're used to fighting." Venus said.

"So what? It's still our duty as Sailor Senshi to fight evil!" Jupiter said
as she cracked her knuckles. "I've been wanting to get in some action for a
while!"
"Hold on a minute!" Mercury said as she took out her computer and engaged
her visor. "I agree with you that this is a job for us, but we can't go
charging in there. My sensors are indicating that those robbers have a very
powerful bomb with enough plastic explosives to take out the entire bank and
everyone in it! They're also armed and they have a large group of hostages!
Two of them are seriously hurt and need to be brought to the hospital
immediately!"
"So how do we go about doing it?" Venus asked.

"Well I..." It was at that moment that Mercury's computer suddenly started
beeping as it began picking up a new power signature. She then looked up as
she saw a pinprick of green light come streaking down from the heavens.

----------

Sailor Pluto's eyes widened as she saw the figure dressed in green from the
Time Gate. There was no doubt about it now. She had to go back several
hundred centuries before she found the same energy signature that matched
the one she was seeing now. That was a Green Lantern all right. And he
possessed enough energy in that one tiny ring to more than rival the Silver
Imperium Crystal a thousand times over! The power derived from the Guardians
of the Universe was not something to sneeze at and were on a par with the
gods.

The real question was not if this person was evil. Green Lanterns were
supposed to be protectors of the innocent and enforcers of justice, and this
one had not a single trace of evil within him. The real question was whether
or not the appearance of such a powerful being would upset the future of
Crystal Tokyo. She had already worked for many years to ensure that future
kingdom of the Moon would come to pass. She had never forgiven herself for
allowing the first Moon Kingdom to have fallen, and had been using her
chronal energy powers and the Time Gate to manipulate key events in the
space-time continuum. Now this individual has appeared with more than enough
power to offset all of her preparations. So far, he had not done anything to
change the course of the time stream, but Setsuna would have to keep a close
eye on him. The Green Lantern would make a powerful ally... but he could
also be a powerful enemy.

----------

Ranma smirked as he dived down toward the building where the hostage
situation was taking place. It wasn't something that was threatening Sector
2814, but it was his duty to protect the citizens of this planet and all the
others as well. His Power Ring was already updating him on the situation.

<I scan five men who are heavily armed and twelve hostages. Two of the
hostages are seriously wounded and will need medical attention at once. I
also detect a very powerful, though primitive explosive device as well. >
<No problem, I can take care of it in about a minute. >
<Be careful, Ranma.>

The Green Lantern nodded as he was suddenly enveloped in a bright nimbus of
emerald light and streaked forward.

----------

Meanwhile, somewhere deep in space, just outside the perimeter of the Milky
Way...

"Are you certain? He is there?" The young woman asked as she looked at the
display on the monitor on the bridge of the mighty mothership of the Shalla
Empire. Behind the craft was a huge fleet of ships with enough firepower to
level a planet in less than a minute. All were heading in one direction,
toward the Sol system.

Princess Marinnia was quite tall and well-formed with long red hair trailing
down to the small of her back. On her head was an elaborate crown that was a
bejeweled tiara with a huge red gemstone in the front. In her hand, was a
gleaming staff capped with a silvery figurehead of some dragonlike beast.

"Yes, Princess Marinnia. The rumors were true. The Green Lantern has been
confirmed to be living on the third planet of a minor solar system in this
galaxy."
"Excellent! Set coordinates for that planetary system! Now, nothing shall
stop me from my business with the Green Lantern! And any who dare oppose me
shall feel the full might of the Shalla Empire!"

"Yes, Highness. We shall arrive at that system within a few days."

----------

The Sailor Senshi were about to make their move when they caught sight of
something diving toward the robbers.

"Back off or I'll push this button and destroy this entire building!" One of
the robbers said as he shouted at the police and waved around the detonator
in his hands. His four cohorts were laying down a withering amount of
gunfire to keep the rest of the police pinned down. However, the robbers
were about to get the surprise of their lives.

One of the robbers decided to toss another grenade at the police, which
caused the officers to dive for cover. However, they would not be harmed as
a green flash of energy appeared before them and formed a wall between them
and the explosion. Debris was sent flying as the grenade detonated, but not
a single officer or bystander was hurt as the emerald barrier easily
shrugged off the blast.

<Ranma, you could have just surrounded that grenade in an energy bubble. >

<Yeah, well that blanket shielding did the trick. Besides, those gunmen are
still firing. >

Sure enough, the robbers were still firing with their automatic weapons
after that grenade was thrown, but the bullets bounced off the barrier Ranma
had set up, leaving the gunmen speechless. Another flash of green light
suddenly sped by them and they found their hands empty as their guns were
snatched out of their possession. Then as they stood in total shock, they
heard a voice.

"In brightest day, in darkest night. No evil shall escape my sight! Let
those who worship evil's might, beware my power... Green Lantern's Light!"

The robbers were blinded as Ranma suddenly appeared in front of them with
their guns in his hands. He smiled as he casually crushed the weapons into
useless scrap. In addition to the energy-manipulation powers of the ring,
Ranma had also undergone serious strength training on various planets with
greater gravity fields than Earth's.

"Well now, let's see how tough you are without your little toys." Ranma
remarked as he put his martial arts skills to the test. Before they could
react, the Green Lantern was among their ranks and pounding the living
daylights out of them. In less than a minute, four of the five thugs were
down and out from Ranma's punches and kicks.

---------

"Cool! He knows martial arts!" Jupiter said as she watched that lithe and
well-toned body move with incredible grace and skill.

Mercury nodded as she had her visor and computer working on analyzing the
Green Lantern. However, with the power of the ring giving off fields to
scramble any attempt to scan the ring bearer, all Mercury could get was an
occasional spike in energy readings and static.

----------

"Well pal. It looks like you're the last." Ranma said as he dusted off his
gloved hands.

"Back off or I'll blow us all up!" The thug said as he held up the
detonator. "I'm more than willing to take you all with me!"
The Green Lantern shrugged as he casually replied. "You may be willing, but
I'm not."

Just before the thug pressed the switch, Ranma sent out a beam of green
energy at the bomb and surrounded it with a force-field bubble. The
explosion was contained within the globe with no more noise than a gentle
pop. The last thug then joined his comrades in dreamland from a gentle tap
from Ranma's fist.

The Green Lantern nodded as the danger was past and walked over to where the
two wounded guards lay. He concentrated his ring's power and knelt down to
pass his hand over the two men. The guards immediately got up as they felt
their wounds become instantly healed. The Green Lantern then rose and gave
everyone a friendly wave as he then took off in a stream of green
brilliance.

----------

The Sailor Senshi could only gaze in wonder as they saw the cosmic avenger
streak off into the sky and disappear into the heavens.

"Cool!" Jupiter sighed as she continued to look up into the skies.

"Wow! Where can I get one of those?" Sailor Venus was referring to both the
ring and its bearer.

Mercury could only gaze at the heavens in wonder and disbelief. The power
readings she got from her computer were way beyond anything the device could
ever hope to estimate. It was a sure bet that the Green Lantern's power was
easily a match for the Silver Imperium Crystal. She was especially intrigued
by the bearer of that ring.

It was then that the three Senshi realized that they were going to be late
getting back to class and high-tailed it back to their school.

----------

<Well, that was fun! > Ranma mentally commented as he transformed back into
his civilian clothes inside a broom closet at Juuban High. As he emerged
from the closet, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch period.

<I must say that you handled that situation quite nicely. > The ring
remarked. <Though I am surprised that the Sailor Senshi didn't lend a hand.
Not that you needed it. >

<Who? > Ranma asked silently as he retrieved his book bag from his locker
and headed toward his next class.

<You don't know about them? Oh yes, of course you don't know. You haven't
been on Earth for the past few years. The Sailor Senshi are kind of like
you. They happen to be Earth's Protectors against ancient, recurring evil.
And here's another surprise for you. >

<What is it? >

<Remember those three girls that you ate lunch with? Well, they happen to be
the Sailor Senshi. They were nearby and were about to take on those
terrorists when we showed up. >

<Really? How do you know so much about them? >

<Remember that I do have a complete history of the Universe up to the point
of Oa's destruction and part of that history deals with the Moon Kingdom of
the Silver Millennium some one thousand years ago. I have also received
reports of the appearance of the Sailor Senshi and simply cross-referenced
files. Their energy signatures do match those emitted from that dynasty. >

<Cool! So they might make good allies then. > Ranma mentally commented as he
headed to his next class. One his way down the hall, he saw Makoto, Minako,
and Ami rushing to get to their classes. They were soon followed by Usagi,
who was also dashing to beat the late bell.

----------

Somewhere halfway across the Milky Way, Princess Marinnia nodded as he
ship's navigator confirmed that they would arrive in the Earth's solar
system in a few days. She then began thinking of what was going to happen
when she arrived on that puny, primitive world.

<The Green Lantern shall learn not to trifle with a princess of the Shalla
Empire! >

To be continued...

Author's notes

My readers probably thought I forgot about this story. Never fear for it
still lives! Who is this intergalactic girl and what does she want with
Ranma? (hint, hint). Well you're going to have to wait for chapter four. See
you then!
