Chapter 1
Ring Bearer
An unknown number of centuries ago

The Guardians of the Universe were dying. Sinestro, a former
member of the Green Lantern Corps had succeeded in his plan to
devastate the once mighty legion of intergalactic protectors. Using
the one weakness that all Green Lanterns shared, the inability to
affect anything that is yellow, Sinestro had begun to systematically
eliminate the Green Lanterns and take the energies stored within
their weapons, the Power Rings. When the numbers of Green
Lanterns had declined enough, the villain then took on the
homeworld of the Guardians. Through treachery and deceit, the
power-hungry individual was successful in destroying the primary
source of the Green Lantern's Power, the Great Battery of Oa.

However, this grand scheme had its price and Sinestro discovered
that he could not command the vast energies within the Great
Battery. His body disintegrated and his main weapon against the
Green Lanterns, the Yellow Power Ring, was flung out into the
vastness of the universe.

However, the Guardians of the Universe would not survive long to
savor their bittersweet victory, as the destruction of the Great
Battery had caused a chain-reaction in the core of the planet Oa.
Within the main headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps, the
remaining Guardians that were still alive worked feverishly to
complete their final creation and last hope to keep the memory of
the Green Lantern Corps alive. The universe still needed a protector
and even if the Guardians were to perish, their legacy would live on
in their last and greatest symbol, a new Power Ring.

The project was originally conceived to counter the threat of
Sinestro. However, with him destroyed and the Guardians on the
brink of extinction, the ring was meant for whoever would be the
final Green Lantern. Unlike the other rings, this one did not suffer
the impurity of its predecessors. It could affect even yellow objects.
Furthermore, unlike the previous rings, this new one did not need to
be periodically recharged every 24 hours. It had a vast, replenishing
supply and had an artificial intelligence, patterned after the
surviving Guardians' personalities. Its energies were fused with the
life essences of the few Guardians that were left. They decided that
their sacrifice was necessary in order to complete the weapon of the
last Green Lantern. There was one catch though. The subject who
was to become the last Green Lantern needed to be one of
extraordinary talent and possess the vast potential to live up to the
standards of the Guardians.

As Oa went into its death throes, the last of the Guardians gasped
his final breath and used his remaining energies to send the most
powerful weapon in the Universe away into space. Just as the tiny
ring was sent hurtling through space, the homeworld of the
Guardians of the Universe exploded and was reduced to cosmic
space dust.

Earth a long time later

The tiny ring had been traveling as a streak of emerald light for
centuries on end, seeking out the one who would become the final
Green Lantern. It had visited many planets, but it still could not
find the one who could fit the criteria that the Guardians had laid
out when it was created. Now it was approaching a blue-white
world that was within a minor planetary system near the center of
the Milky Way. As it darted down toward the surface, it was went
virtually unnoticed by the population as it appeared to just about
everyone as a firefly or some other luminescent insect. As it flitted
about, it systematically analyzed the psychological aspects of each
person, mentally crossing them off when they were deemed
unsuitable. Some individuals stood out more than others did. The
ring was able to extrapolate the future personalities of each person;
based on the lives they lived on what influences were having an
affect on them.

Ranma Saotome designated as ring bearer and future Green
Lantern. Begin bonding process and training. >

The tiny streak of light zipped down and into the pit, just as Genma
threw his son with fish sausages wrapped around him and then shut
the lid. He chuckled with glee as he thought that this would be the
time in which his son would finally master the Cat Fist. The weak
boy had started to develop a fear of cats and had begged his father
not to throw him back into that pit. Genma became dissatisfied with
his son's whining and scolded him for being so pathetic. He had
smacked him around several times, saying that a true martial artist
must suffer for his Art.

As Ranma hit the ground, he instantly heard the screeching and
yowling of the hunger maddened cats as they quickly closed in on
him. Just as he was about to be clawed and bitten by the felines, a
bright green flash of light suddenly appeared, blinding the cats and
causing them to scurry away in fear, their hunger momentarily
forgotten. The tiny spark then wrapped itself around the middle
finger of Ranma's right hand. When the light formed a circle
around the digit and became solid, the boy looked down and saw
that his finger now had a strange-looking ring on it. The ring was a
simple band, but had a circular face on top with a symbol on it. The
image was that of circle with two lines running tangent across the
top and bottom, forming a simple picture of a lantern. The piece of
jewelry seemed to pulse with an eerie green glow and the young
martial artist wondered just what was going on.

It was then that the cats got over their surprise when the light faded
and restarted their assault on Ranma. The boy screamed as the cats
rushed toward him, but as he put his arms up to protect his face, he
heard a voice in his head.

<Do not fear. I will save you. >

Suddenly, the cats were stopped short as an energy bubble
enveloped the boy and then shot upward. The lid of the pit was
blown completely off, causing Genma to be thrown off his feet. The
bubble became a streak of emerald light and went rocketing off into
the heavens, away from the greedy and stupid martial artist, doing
better than Mach 3. In less than a second, Genma's key to uniting
the schools of the Anything Goes and his future meal tickets was
gone to fulfill a greater destiny.

Genma shook his head after picking himself off the ground and
looked back into the pit, He blanched when he saw nothing but
several dozens of cats fighting over the remnants of fish sausage
and no sign whatsover of the boy. He could only think of one thing.

<I'm dead! >

Somewhere on the Moon (yes, that's right, the Moon)

"Where am I?" Ranma asked the thing on his hand as he found
himself on some strange place and that it was suddenly nighttime.
He was also very nervous at the fact that he was glowing with a
green light and wondered if he had become radioactive or
something.

<Do not fear. > The voice said again. <I brought you to this place so
that we can be able to speak privately. >

"W-Where are you?" Ranma asked as he looked around.

<Look at your right hand. I'm the ring on your finger. >

Ranma looked down and his eyes widened as he saw the Power
Ring. He held up his hand and pointed with his left index finger.

"Y-Y-You are...?"

<Yes Ranma Saotome, I'm the one who saved you and brought you
to the Moon. >

Ranma became a bit relieved on hearing that he was far away from
that awful pit, when he then realized where he was. "W-WHAT?!
THE MOON?!" How did he get here? He began to panic. Didn't he
need a space suit or something? Why wasn't he choking without
air?

<Calm down Ranma. Nothing will happen to you. I am using my
energy to protect you while we're here. I brought you to the Moon to
totally ensure our privacy and give you a sample of what I'm
capable of. You see, you have been chosen to be the new Green
Lantern and protector of sector 2184 well, actually since the
Green Lantern Corps are all gone, I guess that makes you the
protector of the entire Universe, now doesn't it? >

"Huh? Green Lantern? What's a Green Lantern?"

The ring's voice took on a friendly tone as it began to explain

To be continued?

Author's notes

Well, here's yet another idea that popped into my head and refused
to go away until I wrote the first chapter. Where could I go with
this? Well the ring that Ranma now wears can be thought of like a
rune weapon, since it does have the imprinted essences of the
deceased Guardians of the Universe. The ring will be the guiding
force in Ranma's life as he is trained to become the new protector of
the Universe. He will grow up under the ring's influence and I can
see Ranma soaring through the spaceways and having lots of
adventures. Or we can have him grow up on Earth with the ring
training him and later go off into space. Why did I have the ring
choose him when he was so young and impressionable? Well, the
ring had decided that training the future Green Lantern at an early
age would yield much greater results than training an egotistical,
boorish, socially inept sixteen-year-old, right? Ranma is still at an
age that he can still be changed and Genma's influence hadn't
taken hold completely.

I've also had ideas of Ryoga getting a hold on Sinestro's ring as
well as a few encounters between Ranma as a Green Lantern and
the rest of the Nerima group after he returns to Japan at sixteen or
so. Unlike Ranmatech, this Ranma knows his past and such. So
many ideas so little time to write them.
