Megaman X: Side Story
Part II: History Revealed
X stood before the monitor that displayed Dr. Light’s image, the fact that the image had spoken to him startled X.
“Do not worry X.” Dr. Light said. X looked at the image of his creator and wondered.
“X, I assumed that one day you would return to this place, the place of your birth. Now, as I’m sure you’re already aware I have much to tell you. Are you prepared to hear what I have to tell you?” Dr. Light asked. X nodded, still not saying a word.
“It has been well over 100 years since you were originally designed X, however, you are not a complete prototype as you may’ve thought yourself to be. Your body structure and personality were designed based upon that of your predecessor. The original Megaman.” Dr. Light’s image spoke, and the monitor switched to an image of the original Megaman.
X looked at the image in awe, unable to believe the amazing resemblance between himself and the robot on the screen. Dr. Light’s image came back up and began to speak again.
“Megaman was originally intended to be a robot boy, who I hoped would be able to live a peaceful life with his sister Roll. Unfortunately however, that was not to be. My former assistant Dr. Wily had created a group of evil robots based upon my schematics for Rock, Megaman’s original name. Wily’s robots began attacking the earth, and Rock took it upon himself to fight them. He asked me to rebuild him into a warrior and was from then on known as Megaman.”
“After many long years of fighting with Dr. Wily and his evil creations, Megaman had finally gotten the best of Wily and he fled. He was never heard from again. During this time of peace, I began work on a new robot. A robot that would be able to think and to feel, to make his own decisions and live his life the way he saw fit. That robot was you, X.” Dr. Light’s image once again blipped out and was replaced by a list of files. “These are lab surveillance records that took place during your construction X, you are allowed to view them at your own discretion.” Dr. Light continued.
X walked up to the terminal and started with the first file, after a brief moment, the record began playing. It showed an image of Megaman and Dr. Light standing over a table that X was laying on in his early production stages.
“What is he Dr. Light?” Megaman asked.
“This is the next version of you, Megaman.” Dr. Light replied.
“So, he’s gonna be like a little brother?” Megaman asked with a smile on his face.
“In a way, yes” Dr. Light said. That was the end of the file.
For a good half-hour X looked through the security files, watching himself being built by the careful hands of Dr. Light. X finally came to the last file.
“X…” Dr. Light spoke. “View this file only if you feel it necessary, as the contents may not be what you want them to be…” X looked at the file and hesitantly opened it, the file began playing.
“His systems are perfect, for lack of a better term.” Dr. Light said, smiling at the completed X who was fast asleep in his capsule.
“Why can’t you activate him now Dr. Light?” Megaman asked.
“I can but, he is fully capable of thinking on his own, therefore this capsule will test all of his systems so that we can confirm whether or not he will be a threat.” Dr. Light replied as he pressed a button on the wall, the capsule sank into the floor slowly and was sealed shut.
“Unfortunately, the tests won’t be completed for another thirty years and I will not live to see that day…” Dr. Light continued. Megaman looked at the doctor and said.
“I’ll still be here Dr. Light, I can open up the capsule and activate X when he’s ready.”
“Thank you Megaman… I knew you would do that,” Dr. Light said with a smile.
Both Megaman and Dr. Light continued looking down at the floor until the hum of X’s capsule sinking deeper underground grew silent. Then there was a loud rumbling.
“What’s that?” Megaman shouted.
“I don’t know, an earthquake perhaps?” Dr. Light replied.
An instant later, the wall behind Dr. Light and Megaman swelled up and exploded, sending debris everywhere and hurling both to the other side of the room. Mechanical footsteps were heard walking in. A tall red robot with long blonde hair appeared from the dust.
“Zero!” X shouted, watching closely.
Zero looked from Megaman to Dr. Light and started laughing insanely. Megaman got up and shouted at the robot. “Who are you?”
“The next best thing!” The unknown robot shouted back at Megaman and fired a buster shot at him, which planted Megaman into the wall. The red robot then looked at Dr. Light and walked over to him. He knelt down and spoke to Dr. Light in a sinister tone.
“Sorry doc… but, you’ve been out done once again, goodbye.” With that, the robot pointed his buster down at Dr. Light and grinned wickedly.
“Megaman! Dr. Light!” Roll shouted, racing into the room.
“Ah, another one… a pretty one at that!” The robot shouted and blasted Roll with his buster rifle. Roll received the full impact of the blast, she fell to her knees and her body fell down the steps, a thick red fluid began flowing from her silent body all over the floor. The red robot laughed to himself.
“Roll… Roll… ROLL!” Megaman shouted, pulling himself from the wall. “You’re gonna pay for that you monster!” he screamed at the robot and fired a blast from his Mega buster. The robot dashed under the buster shot, pulled his fist back and punched Megaman in the stomach, putting his arm completely through Megaman.
“Sorry kid… not today.” The robot said to Megaman who was leaking fluid from his mouth. The robot then pointed his buster at Megaman’s face and fired, hurling the already fatally wounded robot’s body against the wall. There wasn’t much left of Megaman’s upper body, the robot nearly blew off his own arm from the power of his buster.
“Now… where was I?” He asked and turned toward Dr. Light.
Dr. Light looked up at the red robot in horror. “No… Megaman… Roll…” he said quietly.
“That blue paper weight caused the doctor that much trouble? Feh, he wasn’t even worth breaking a sweat over… I guess I really am the superior being around here.” The robot said and laughed to himself. He then looked down at Dr. Light “…and now, to finish the job!” The robot shouted and raised his foot high up then drove it straight down into Dr. Light’s spine. Dr. Light screamed in pain as the robot mashed his foot down into the Doctor’s back, laughing louder each time he heard another bone break. The file then began skipping. All X could make out was Zero going back and forth through the lab until the file restored itself.
Zero fell to the ground, laughing maniacally. There was blood all over his hands.
X watched Zero in horror, not being able to believe what he had done. Zero continued laughing, surrounded by the dead bodies of Roll, Megaman and Dr. Light. He kept laughing. But then, he suddenly stopped and looked around him, and looked at his blood stained hands, tears began streaming down his face. Zero then clenched his head and started screaming loudly in pain. That was the end of the file. X grew silent, he just stared at the last image from the file, and it showed Zero on his knees, holding his head.
“Dr. Light…” X said.
“Yes X?” The Doctor’s voice replied.
X put his finger to the screen, tapping on Zero’s shoulder. “What is that?” he asked. “That W in a circle?”
“That is Dr. Wily’s insignia, he embedded it on the exo-structures of his creations.” Dr. Light answered.
“So… Dr. Wily created Zero…” X said to himself.
“It would seem so…” Dr. Light continued.
X closed his eyes and sighed heavily. All the questions about his origin had been answered; even questions he didn’t want answered.
“Well… it doesn’t matter anymore, Zero’s dead… Sigma’s dead… Dr. Wily’s dead… It’s long over…” X said. “I guess… I guess I can live out the dream you had intended for Rock, now that the world is finally at peace…”
“I would love to see that X but, I’m afraid it may not be possible. Not yet anyway.” Dr. Light said.
“What do you mean?” X asked. “The world has been at peace for over three years now, it’s finally over.”
“I don’t know X, a candle always flickers violently just before it dies out.” Dr. Light said.
“A colony dropping onto earth and killing nearly everything on it, isn’t violent enough?” X shouted.
“No, I fear that something far worse is on the horizon.” Dr. Light replied.
X sighed, not being able to understand what Dr. Light could possibly mean.
“X, I don’t expect you to understand just yet, but you will, in time.” Dr. Light said to X. “I always dreamed that the world would be kinder to you than it was to Rock, I hoped that the world would allow you to live a peaceful life. But, as I have watched you grow in strength and power. I realize that you have to fight to achieve your dream. You have to fight X.” Dr. Light continued.
X opened his eyes again and looked back at the monitor.
“X, I never intended for you to be a war machine, however you still possess an unimaginable amount of power within you. I’ve made something for you incase the need ever came for you to use that power.”
“What do you mean Dr. Light? A new armor?” X asked.
“Not just A armor X… ALL armors…” Dr. Light replied.
“All armors?” X replied, raising an eyebrow.
Several machines hummed to life and a small case housing a tiny microchip appeared from underneath the terminal keypad.
“X, please, lay on the table behind you.” Dr. Light said.
X did as he was asked and two thin mechanical arms sprang forth from the worktable. One removed X’s chest plate, the other took the microchip and began installing it into X’s core processor. After several moments, both arms finished their tasks and X sat up.
“X… you are now able to tap into all of your armors. That chip contains the programs for each armor you have ever used, as well as data for a new armor. However, this new armor is extremely powerful, it was intended for you to use if you were ever forced to use all of your power.” Dr. Light said.
X looked at Dr. Light’s image on the screen and nodded. “I understand.”
X sat up and climbed off the table. “Dr. Light…” he asked.
“Yes?” Dr. Light responded.
“Where am I supposed to go now? What do I do? How am I going to prepare for what’s coming?” he asked again.
“I wish I could tell you X but sadly, I cannot. There are things that both people and reploids alike have to find out on their own. All I can tell you is always trust your instincts and to be very careful.
X nodded and replied. “Thank you Dr. Light.” With that, X began to leave the old lab.
“X!” Dr. Light said.
“Hmm?” X said, looking back.
“That girl, Alia… she cares about you a lot X. You can feel love, so can she… cherish it X. You may find your dreams in places you never even thought to look before.” Dr. Light said and with that, his image disappeared from the screen and the lab grew silent, returning to the state X had found it in. X slowly ascended up the stairs and reached the surface again.
Once at the surface, the cover to the lab slid closed and sank back into the ground again. X took off his helmet and began to think.
“How did he know…?” He asked himself, his hair blowing in the wind. Taking a look around X noticed that it was already morning. He wasn’t sure how much time he had spent in the lab; it could’ve been days for all he knew. He decided it was time to return to base, everyone was probably worried sick about him.
He began trudging back towards hunter base when it hit him; he had the powers of all his armors within him. If he was right, he could activate the falcon armor and fly back to base. Dr. Light never told X exactly how to activate his armors but he had a feeling how too. He lifted up his left hand and tapped the crystal on his helmet with two of his fingers. His eyes began flashing with lines of code and his body glowed brightly as his Falcon Armor appeared on his body.
Satisfied with his new ability and happy that he wouldn’t have to walk all the way back to base, X jumped up and took to the sky.
Maverick Hunter Base
X soon arrived at base. After touching down, he de-activated his armor and entered the base. He quickly made his way to the command center to check in. He spotted Douglas looking over a set of plans at a desk. Douglas looked up and waved to X.
“Hey! Where have you been?” He asked.
“Oh, no where important really. Just needed some time to myself that’s all” X replied.
Signas then stepped into the room and walked over to X.
“Welcome back, you were gone all night X. Is everything okay?” Signas questioned.
“Yeah, everything’s fine. Sorry I never called in last night.” X replied.
“It’s no problem, you’re safe and that’s what matters.” Signas said.
X nodded and thanked Signas, then headed for his quarters. X made his way to his quarters and opened the door only to find Alia standing right in his doorway with her arms crossed. Just by the look on her face, X knew he was in for it.
“Where have you been? You had me worried sick!” She exclaimed.
“Hey, don’t worry about it. I went out to see Dr. Cain that’s all.” He replied.
“That’s all he says!” She shouted and threw her arms up.
X pulled Alia into his arms and gave her a soft kiss on her lips. “I’m sorry, next time I won’t forget my leash.” X said with a sly grin. Alia stood still, her eyes fixed on X and she was blushing horribly. X then stepped around her and went inside his quarters.
Alia was still awestruck, she made her way out of the doorway and into the corridor. X wasn’t sure what caused him to kiss her but he didn’t think anything of it.
“There’s a lot I’ve got to think about…” he said to himself, taking a seat at his desk. He took his helmet off and hung it up on the wall. He turned on his terminal and stared at the blank screen for a few moments, his thoughts were focused primarily on Zero again. He wasn’t sure what to think of Zero. After witnessing what he did to Dr. Light all those years ago, not to mention the dream he had the other night.
To say X was confused would be an understatement. He sat at his desk for hours, just staring at the blank screen of his terminal and debating with his own thoughts. X decided to take his mind off of Zero for a while and started typing at his keypad. He pulled up an analysis of all the armors he had used thus far. The list was extensive, and it seemed that which each Armor, Dr. Light had outdone himself ten-fold. X began to think about Dr. Light himself.
“How had Dr. Light made all these weapons for me?” X asked himself. “I never saw him build them when I was watching the security files.” He muttered.
Weaving in and out of cars was almost as troublesome has fighting mavericks. X was running towards civilian cars that were trying to escape the city, behind them were the robots X had heard about from Dr. Cain. “Mavericks” was what they were called.
“Why are they doing this? Those people didn’t do anything to them.” X said to himself as he raced down the highway. Looking over his head, X saw a giant air-ship descend towards him, the cargo hatch open and a giant riding armor jumped out. A Purple Maverick was operating it.
“Who are you? Why are you attacking these people?” X asked the Maverick.
“I am Vile, and I am going to rip you apart you pathetic antique!” The robot shouted back to him and charged X with his mech. X dove out of the way and blasted the mech with his X-buster. Vile laughed as the blast didn’t even scratch the mech and he continued his assault on X.
“Give it up hunter! There’s no way you can beat me!” Vile yelled.
“What am I doing here?” X asked himself. “There’s no way I can take him, he’s gonna kill me…” Before X could form another thought, he was in Vile’s grip.
“End of the line X…” Vile said in a sinister tone.
Vile got ready to rip X in half when he heard a loud buster shot go off. The blast smashed into his armor and tore the left arm off.
“What the?” Vile exclaimed.
“Not this time pal!” Zero shouted, dashing towards Vile and X.
“Zero… damn you!” Vile shouted.
Zero skidded to a stop and powered up his buster again. “This time you’ll lose more than your arm, Maverick…” Zero said. Just as he pulled the shot off, Vile jumped back up to the air-ship and took off. Zero watched him escape then turned to X.
“Are you okay?” Zero asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine Zero, I thought I was a goner for a second there.” X replied.
“X, you gotta fight smart. There’s no way you can take on a power like Vile right now, you’ve gotta get stronger.” Zero said. “Just hang in there, some day I’ll bet you’ll be every bit as powerful as I am. X nodded and smiled at Zero.
“Come on then, we’ve gotta scout out Sigma’s fortress and report back to Dr. Cain.” Zero continued. X got to his feet and watched Zero take off.
“As powerful as Zero?” X thought to himself. “How could I ever be as powerful as him?”
A beep from his terminal woke X up. After opening his eyes, X saw that his hand had been planted on the keypad the entire time, the document had filled up with the keys that X had been sleeping on.
“Another dream… how long was I out for?” X wondered. He checked the clock beside his terminal; it was very late at night. He figured everyone to have already turned in for the night. Except for maybe Douglas, he was always up at these crazy hours working on something.
“With the way he downs coffee, it’s no surprise.” X thought to himself. He figured going back to sleep would be pointless, after all, he had been out for six hours already. X decided that it was time he started preparing for what Dr. Light warned him about. He got out of his chair and headed for the training room.
Upon entering the training room X decided that it would be best to re-familiarize himself with his older armors, before he worked out with some of his more recent ones. With that, he tapped the crystal on his forehead and activated the original armor Dr. Light had given to X when he first started fighting against the Mavericks. One of the first things he had noticed was that Dr. Light had added to the original specifications by adding the air-dash feature to his leg modules.
He flipped on the overhead lights to the room and began warming up. While he was doing this, X was also wondering how he’d make use of his earlier armors when he had the use of his more advanced suits. He couldn’t think up much of a reason so he decided he’d just have to find out in battle and started for one of the obstacle courses.
After several hours, X switched to his second armor. He was now working hard on one of the targeting simulations. Simulated Mavericks were coming at him from both sides; he leaped into the air and powered up his dual X-buster. Once landing on the ground he fired at one, destroying it, then, back flipped over another and fired a second fully charged blast.
Morning came shortly afterward and the sun was shining in through the windows of the training room. But X hadn’t even noticed, it seemed as if he’d only been working out for only ten minutes. X also didn’t notice that most of the base’s main personnel had gathered at the door-side observation window. Douglas, Signas, Alia, a few trainees, and several hunters from the 5th and 9th units had all gathered by the window. They were all watching X in awe. Not one of them had ever seen him working this hard before; it was even more surprising that he in one of his old armors.
“Where did he get that suit from?” Alia said.
Douglas looked at her, puzzled. “I thought you designed armor for him to use Alia. Isn’t that one of yours?” he asked.
“No, I’ve never seen that anywhere before. Let alone could I have programmed it for him.” She answered.
“It’s strange…” Signas said to himself.
Two hunters and Douglas turned to him and said in unison. “What is?”
“I’ve never seen him move or fight like this before… not even in a battle with Sigma…” he continued.
X still hadn’t noticed the group watching him; he was completely focused on his training. He was now using his Falcon armor and was running a scenario that involved flying to a set of fixed airborne targets and firing a buster shot through them.
“Is this what I’m supposed to be doing? Is this how Dr. Light wanted me to prepare?” he asked himself.
His mind started becoming clouded again. Then the images came. X couldn’t focus anymore, all he could see were images of Zero. X saw himself yelling and shouting at the top of his lungs, pounding on the lid of his capsule, trying to warn Dr. Light about Zero. But he was too late; he heard the explosion, the screams, and the laughter.
Everyone watched X screaming and shouting, they had no idea what was wrong with him. He was clutching his head and firing his X-buster everywhere.
“What’s going on?” Signas yelled.
“What’s he doing?” Alia said.
All they could hear was X shouting out names and screaming in pain. Then he drained his power and started falling. Everyone looked on in horror as X crashed to the ground, completely unconscious.
“X!” Alia shouted in panic. She pushed everyone inside and ran into the room. X’s armor disappeared from his body and returned to his normal state. Alia ran to his side and dropped to her knees beside him, she took off his helmet and held his head in her arms.
“X… X please wake up… X!” She shouted, shaking him back and forth. The others soon came to X and Alia and huddled over the two of them, worried expressions on all of their faces. Everyone grew silent. Tears started to run down Alia’s face as she held X close against her.
“Alert Lifesaver! Immediately!” Signas shouted.
“Roger!” One of the hunters replied.
“Get a stretcher in here on the double!” Signas shouted again.
“I’m on it!” Said another. “I’ll help you.” Replied one of the others.
Signas continued giving orders to the group; hunters were going back and forth as they were given orders. Alia continued holding X.
“Please be okay…” she whispered to him.
