It’s been three years… Three years since that fateful battle and he still could hardly remember anything about it, and, what he did remember was slowly fading from his memory. X was now a high ranking officer among the Maverick Hunters but, ever since the day Sigma was defeated three years ago, all traces of the Sigma/Zero virus had quickly vanished and Maverick Reploids returned to their normal selves. It was estimated that in another year or two, the Maverick Hunters wouldn’t even be needed anymore. With the world slowly returning to normal, due in large part to the peace and prosperity shared by both human and reploid alike, X’s dream was finally coming true, but, he wasn’t happy. Talk of the eminent Maverick Hunter disband soon became common knowledge, and that worried X. Sigma was gone but still, there was a feeling deep inside of him, a feeling that kept him awake almost every night, a feeling of… evil… Maverick Hunter Base, early evening. X was lying in his bunk in his quarters; his eyes were wide open. He dared not close them, every time he did, it seemed as if thousands upon thousands of images filled his head. “Something’s not right…” he thought to himself. “But… what?” He spent the greater part of the night simply laying there, thinking to himself when, all of a sudden there was a knock at his door, followed by a soft sounding voice. “X? Can I come in?” Alia said from the other side of the door. “Yeah, sure, come on in.” X replied in a low tone. The door slid open and Alia slowly stepped into X’s quarters and looked down at him. “There you are…” She said with a smile. X looked up at Alia and smiled a little bit, seeing her was one of the few things that brought a smile to X’s face for the past few months. Alia sat down on the edge of X’s bunk and looked at him. “So, you’ve just been laying here for the past four hours?” She asked. “Yeah… pretty much…” X replied in an absent tone. “What are you thinking about?” She asked, a hint of concern in her voice. X sat up and looked at Alia, still smiling a little. “Nothing important really” he replied. “Why don’t I believe you?” She asked, smiling back at him. “Probably because you never do.” X said with a grin. “True… very true…” She said back to him. “Well, I just wanted to come in and check on you, you know how much I worry about you, right?” X nodded and replied. “How could I forget? You tell me all the time.” Alia took her fingers through X’s hair and smiled at him. “Good…” She replied as she got up and made her way out of his quarters. X smiled to himself and laid back down, he stared up at the ceiling blankly and let out an exhausted sigh. “Tomorrow’s another day…” he said to himself as he closed his eyes and went to sleep. Maverick Hunter Base, morning. X had woken up rather early but most days so did everyone else at the base so work usually got started pretty early as well. Walking into the main command center, he found Signas and Douglas at one of the control panels at the far corner of the room. “Hey guys.” X said as he made his way over. “Good morning X.” Signas replied. “Hey X, hope you slept well!” Douglas said, handing X and warm cup of coffee. “Thank you Douglas.” X said, taking a sip. “How’s the board looking today?” X asked. “It’s a clean slate, all across the board.” Signas said. “There hasn’t been a Maverick detected over a week!” Alia said from across the room. “Hmm… It’s starting to become a trend…” X muttered. Signas looked back at X, a little shocked. “You say that like it’s a bad thing X…” “No, I don’t mean it like that.” X replied “It’s just… odd… no Mavericks… it hasn’t been this quiet in five years…” He continued. “I know!” Douglas said, “It sure is nice to have a little peace and quiet for a change. That way we can concentrate our efforts on fixing the damage caused by the colony drop three years ago. “Good point…” X said, smiling. “So, what’s on the agenda for today?” He asked. “Well…” Signas began. “Nothing much, we have the scout divisions on their usual runs, they’ll be back in before nightfall. Other than that, it looks to be like another quiet day.” “Any word from Dr. Cain?” X asked. “None, he said he’d contact us if anyone was needed down at the city.” Alia replied. “Okay.” X said and slowly made his way out of the room. Alia never took her eyes off of X as he made his way out. “I hope he’s alright…” She thought to herself. X began roaming the halls by himself, he passed other hunters every now and then and greeted them but that was the only time he’d lifted his head up all day. One time when checking to see where he was, X found himself to be at the other end of the base, in what seemed to be someone’s quarters, but, they appeared to have been abandoned for quite some time. He flipped the light on and looked around, everything in the room was covered in a thick layer of dust. X wondered who could’ve lived here. “Was this person here before I became a hunter?” He thought to himself. He made his way over to a desk on the far right side of the room; he found an old photo sitting ontop of the desk. X picked it up and dusted it off. “What the…?” He exclaimed. The photo was of two reploids, one taller than the other. “Tha.. That’s me but, who is that with me…?” He said to himself, looking at the photo closer. A taller reploid, with red armor and long blonde hair was standing behind him in the photo, with his hand upon X’s shoulder. “Who is that?” He said to himself again. X made his way back to his quarters with the photo in hand; more thoughts were racing through his mind than ever before. Later that night, Alia came into X’s quarters, the same time that she had the previous night. She could tell that he wasn’t in a very talkative mood as soon as she stepped foot inside, she just quietly made her way in and sat down at the foot of his bunk. Several moments passed before either of them spoke. Alia then asked, “Are you okay?” X nodded and sat up, a very distant expression filled his face. “Now I really don’t believe you, what’s the matter X?” She asked him, seeming very worried. X held up the photo he found in the abandoned room and held it up, with his finger pointing to the red reploid. “Who is this Alia?” X asked. “You still don’t remember?” She said, “You still don’t remember him?” X shook his head, looking confused. Alia sighed and took the photo into her hands and looked at it deeply. “That’s Zero… he used to be your partner…” She said quietly. “Zero…?” X replied. “So, that’s who everyone was talking about after that battle with Sigma all those years ago…” He continued. Alia nodded, closing her eyes. “He was your best friend… he would’ve done absolutely anything for you…” Alia whispered. X thought to himself for a moment, despite everything Alia said, he still couldn’t remember this… Zero for the life of him. “Alia…” he said. “Yes?” She replied. “…do you still have the data on Zero that you wanted to give to me?” “Yes I do” She answered. “Could you give it to me in the morning?” He asked again. She smiled and nodded. “Sure thing.” “Thank you…” X replied, looking a little brighter. Maverick Hunter Base, the next morning. X hardly got any sleep at all, he felt restless. He was both straining himself to try and remember anything about Zero but at the same time he was very anxious to receive the data Alia had been keeping for him. He could hardly take waiting so long, several times he even thought of waking Alia up because, everyone usually woke up early but, not this early. The sun wasn’t even up and X was full of life, even without any sleep. X passed the next couple of hours by looking at the photo of Zero and himself, trying to scrounge up even the most insignificant memory of his former partner. But, to no avail, X couldn’t remember a single thing about Zero. Slightly disgusted with himself, he set the photo on a table and left his quarters. He began roaming the silent halls by himself; the only noise he heard was the hum of the power generators on the other side of the base. Normally they couldn’t be heard from this far away due to all the activity that takes place in Hunter base but, X had never been up and walking around so early either. He thought again about waking Alia up early but, quickly remember how unpleasant she is if woken up early, so, he decided to take another look inside of Zero’s abandoned quarters again. “Anything to pass the time…” he thought to himself. He made it to Zero’s quarters a few moments later and let himself in. He dusted off a chair that was situated underneath a desk and sat down. X’s curiosity got the better of him as he began dusting off a keypad at the desk and tried to look into Zero’s terminal, to see if any of his files were still kept on-line. To his surprise, X found that all of Zero’s files were still in the terminal, unfortunately however he could only access menial files. Such as mission reports, training records and self-diagnostics, all of Zero’s personal files had been encrypted and X couldn’t open them. “Must’ve kept to himself a lot.” X said to himself, reading the screen. X was about to shut off the terminal and think of another way of passing the time when he noticed a file entitled “Sigma virus analysis.” He opened the file and began reading what appeared to be nothing more than Zero’s record of the virus, until he came to the end of the file. He read on to that Zero had begun to speak of himself after finishing the analysis, apparently the Sigma virus had an opposite effect on Zero and it worried him. Still unable to remember anything about Zero, the comments made no sense to X but it was still interesting to him nonetheless. X checked the time and nearly fell out of the chair when he realized that he was reading the Sigma virus file for over an hour and a half. Figuring everyone to already be awake, he headed out of Zero’s quarters and quickly made his way to Lifesaver’s medical room where he was to meet with Alia. Medical Treatment Room “I figured he would’ve been sleeping outside of the door, he was so excited about this.” Alia said, almost laughing. Lifesaver let out a slight chuckle, which surprised Alia, being that Lifesaver was the very serious type. X then entered the room, almost crashing into the room. “Well, hello there sunshine.” Alia said, grinning at X. X didn’t know what to say, so he decided to get right down to business. “Is everything ready?” X asked. “Yep!” Alia nodded. “Just hop on the table and we’ll get started right away X.” “Okay.” X said as he took a seat on the table. It was all too obvious that he was very excited about this. “Okay X, just relax.” Alia began. “Lifesaver is going to keep tabs on your processor during the data transfer. X nodded as he tried to calm himself down. Lifesaver took his place at an observation monitor. Alia had a small data device in her hand, she slid open the data receiver port in the crystal on X’s helmet and plugged in a wire leading to her data device. “We’re all set. Are you absolutely sure that you want to do this X?” She asked. X nodded again. “Okay, here it goes…” Alia continued as he pressed a few buttons and the data began transferring to X’s internal memory banks. X closed his eyes and breathed slowly, the blackness of his closed eyes was soon replaced with numbers and letters flashing by at an incredible pace. The characters took shape soon after that, now X could see images of his past, images of… Zero. At first he saw himself in the grips of Vile’s giant mech, the next thing he knew a buster blast whizzed by and badly damaged the mech, Zero came racing towards him as Vile escaped. Another image appeared, he was now standing before Sigma and another robot that appeared to be Zero, only the robot was black and gray. Another image appeared, he was battling a group of Mavericks at the Sky Lagoon along with Zero. Another image, this time he was actually fighting with Zero, except Zero had an evil look in his eyes, and was glowing with a strange energy. Another image, X found himself lying on the floor, he could hear Zero arguing with Sigma, and then an energy blast. “ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” X screamed in horror as everything went black. X opened his eyes, everything was a blur. When he came to, he could see Alia and Lifesaver standing over him. Alia let out a long sigh of relief. “I swear, you ARE trying to give me a heart attack!” She exclaimed. X tried to sit up but the shock hadn’t worn off yet. “What happened?” he asked. “Was the data transferred completely?” he asked again. “Yes…” Alia said in a soft tone. “But, you passed out near the end of the transfer. You’ve been out for over eight hours X…” Lifesaver commented. X moaned, still weak. “X…” Lifesaver started again. “You’re under doctors orders, I want you to stay in your quarters for at least two days before you start work again, I just want to be sure the transfer won’t have any dangerous side effects to your system.” “Okay.” X replied as he slowly sat up and made his way out of the room. Alia watched him leave with a worried look on his face. Lifesaver put his hand on her shoulder and said “Don’t worry Alia, I know how you feel about him. He’ll be fine, I’m sure of it.” Alia nodded and thanked Lifesaver for his support, she then left the Medical room and made her way to the command center. X meanwhile, had made it to his quarters and fell face first onto his bunk; he took his helmet off and tossed it onto the floor. He began debating with himself about whether to try and get some rest because; he was still very exhausted. Or, to begin analyzing the data on Zero that Alia had given to him. X continued pondering on what to do into the late hours of the night. The last platform had just fell from under his feet to the nearly bottom-less pit below, X watched the platform fall to the ground and breathed a sigh of relief that he wasn’t on it. Pulling himself up off the ledge, X quickly dashed through the door ahead of him. The room was pitch black; he couldn’t see anything around him. “Be careful X! I’m picking up that enormous power reading again!” Alia yelled through X’s comlink. Before X could reply, the room light up with a giant red “W” on each of the walls, then he felt it, an incredible surge of evil energy had swept into his body and ran up the back of his spine. He knew who it was. “Not even Sigma is this powerful…” X thought to himself, looking around the room for the source of the energy, even though he knew who it was already. “X… I knew you wouldn’t disappoint me… I’m so happy that you came.” A voice echoed throughout the room, it was Zero’s voice. X turned in the direction of the voice and stared straight up at the being that was once his best friend. “What ever you are… I’m gonna kill you and rip the real Zero out of you! Do you hear me?!?” X screamed up at Zero. “Tsk, tsk… is that anyway to speak to your BEST FRIEND!!!???!!!” Zero screamed back and fired a blast down at X with his Z-buster. X dove to the floor, barely avoiding the blast. “You’re not Zero! Zero could never be this evil!!!” X screamed back and launched his own shot back at Zero. Zero easily deflected it away with his beam saber. “…and you’re being too soft! If you really want to save me, then fight like you mean it!” Zero replied and lunged down at X, his beam saber activated at full power. “Zero! No!” X yelled, getting back to his feet. Zero screamed at the top of his lungs as he came bearing down on X, who was frozen still. “AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!” He continued screaming, lifting his saber back above his head. “ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!” X woke up sharply in a cold sweat he was breathing heavily. “It… it was all just a dream…” He said, wiping the sweat away with his hand. “Just a dream…” he repeated to himself. X laid back down flat on his bunk and stared up at the ceiling. “Was that, real? Did that really happen?” He asked himself. “No, it couldn’t have… Zero was ready to split me in two… what would’ve made him stop?” X closed his eyes again and sighed. “I’ve gotta see Dr. Cain…” he whispered to himself. The Next Afternoon X had slept in rather late but, seeing as he was still under doctor’s orders to remain as in-active as possible, no one disturbed his sleep. Eventually he awoke to discover he’d been asleep all morning and it was already early afternoon. X sat up in his bunk and pondered over the dream he had the previous night, it still made no sense to him. Later he remembered that he wanted to see Dr. Cain. With that, he left his quarters and went to see Signas. He made his way to the command center and spotted Alia at her usual post, looking bored as ever. Not seeing Signas anywhere, he went over to Alia and tapped her on the shoulder. She swung around in her chair and smiled up at X. “Hey you!” She exclaimed, glad to see him. “Hey…” X said, smiling down at her. “Do you know where Signas is?” he asked. “Yeah, he’s in the battle simulator with a few of the trainees.” Alia replied. “Thanks!” X said back and continued on his way. X made his way to the combat simulator room and, seeing as the caution signals were not on, stepped inside and took a look around. The combat simulation room was the biggest room in the entire base. It was a giant arena designed to hone the skills of up and coming hunters. X suddenly had a vision of his past. He was running through a targeting simulation and Zero was instructing him. Eventually he spotted Signas, who was instructing a small group through a training exercise. “He’s pushing those kids harder than ever…” X said to himself with a smile as he made his way over to Signas. Signas was shouting out instructions when he spotted X making his way over to him. “Okay group! Take a break and meet back here in 15 minutes!” Signas shouted. X watched the young hunters quickly make their way off the field. “It’s good to see that you’re well X, I heard that you had a slight accident during the data transfer yesterday.” Signas said with a smile. “Oh, don’t worry about me. I’m fine.” X replied. “I just wanted to tell you that I was going out to see Dr. Cain today, okay?” “Okay, that’s no problem X.” Signas replied. “Just take care, okay?” X nodded and replied “No problem, I’ll call in later and let you know when I’ll be back.” He continued, making his way out the door. Signas watched X leave, his arms crossed. He couldn’t help but wonder what X needed to see Dr. Cain for. Talon City, late afternoon X arrived at the capitol building Dr. Cain was working at and quickly found the old scientist instructing a group of lifter reploids who were moving furniture into the building. “Dr. Cain!” X shouted, running up to the Doctor. Dr. Cain turned to see X running up to him. “Hello X, how are you today?” The old man asked, smiling. “I’m fine doctor.” X replied with a serious look on his face. “Hmm…” Dr. Cain muttered. “You’ve got that look in your eyes X…” “Yes, I need to ask you something.” He said. “Well, what is it then? I can tell it’s important.” Dr. Cain replied. “Doctor, I need to know where you found me…” X said. Dr. Cain sighed for a moment and looked at X. “I told you before, I found you in abandoned laboratory.” “Yes I know, but I need to know exactly where.” X responded. Dr. Cain sighed again and took a seat on a bench; X sat down beside him and looked at the doctor. “Please tell me…” X said in a low tone. Dr. Cain sighed heavily and spoke reluctantly. “It’s approximately 20 miles north of the abandoned junkyard where you fought with Morph Moth…” “The entrance is very hard to notice but, you should be able to spot it easily…” he continued. “Thank you Doctor.” X said and got up. He started to walk away before the Doctor spoke again. “X…” he started. “I searched that entire lab before I found your capsule, not a single instrument in that old lab functioned when I found you, if I did find something you know I would’ve told you.” X nodded and said, “I know Dr. Cain… I know…” Dr. Cain could only sigh again as he watched X go off into the setting sun. “X… whatever you’re searching for, I doubt you’ll find it there…” Dr. Cain said to himself. X journeyed long into the night, completely forgetting about calling Signas and reporting his location to him. There was only one thing X could think about, and that was finding the place where he was created. X trudged through what seemed like endless mountains of junk, scrap metal and deceased Maverick shells. Some of them X even recognized, but any thoughts of those dead Mavericks quickly left his mind, he was completely focused on what he had to find. After hours of searching, X began picking up a low tone beacon in his audios. He walked in the direction of the beacon and upon reaching an empty patch of ground, the beacon ceased. X looked at the ground and narrowed his eyes. The patch of land lifted itself up a little and moved completely to the left. X was now standing before a staircase, eager to see what was down there; he quickly made his way down the stairs. He quickly came to what Dr. Cain had described to him, an old abandoned lab, there were a few broken instruments strewn on the floor as well as a few old robots. But, years of decay had removed any remaining distinguishing features from their bodies; their color had also faded heavily. The only difference between the old robots was the shape of their bodies. X stepped over them, trying his best not to disturb any of them and made his way over to an old computer console. Everything was old and desolate, and it was highly unlikely that anything still worked in the lab. X sighed and said to himself “Dr. Cain was probably right…” X rested his hand on the old keypad and let out another long sigh. The next thing he knew, the entire lab began to hum to life, the keypad lit up slowly, the lights in the ceiling began to flicker on, monitors and switches all across the many terminals became active. Then, the monitor in front of X flickered to life and an image of Dr. Light appeared on the screen. “Dr. Light!” X said with a gasp, taking a step back. “Greetings X…” The image of Dr. Light said. |
