* * * <--- Change of perspective

~~~~~
Duo walked into the hospital room with a bouquet of daffodils in his hand. "Hilde, babe, how ya feelin’? I brought you an offering."
Hilde reached up to wrap her arms around Duo’s neck and pulled him in for a hug and a quick kiss. "I’m fine, and your... offering, is beautiful."
Duo chuckled and reached his hand behind his head to tip his cap up while looking around the room. "Wow, what a drab ‘n’ depressin’ place... Hiya Q-man!"
Quatre was still in the midst of _A Tale of Two Cities._ "Hello, Duo, how are things going in the outside world?"
"Hectic. Man, are you gonna have a lot of work to get done when you get out of here. Everybody wants to talk to us... We’re heroes, man! There’s press everywhere! I can’t go out for a burger without gettin’ ambushed. It’s great!" Duo looked over at Treize’s bed, which was now completely surrounded by curtains. "If they knew that veggie-boy and you were here, you’d never have a moment’s peace."
"Umm... Duo?" Quatre inquired.
"Yeah, man?"
"Treize is... well... He’s awake."
"Nani?!?!" Duo fell back onto Hilde’s bed.
"Yeah, he woke up yesterday but he’s taking his rest right now," contributed Hilde from behind Duo.
"Woah, so what’re we gonna do with him now?"
"What do you mean?" asked Quatre.
"I mean, what’s gonna happen to him after he is all healed? He isn’t gonna take over the world again, is he?"
"No!" exclaimed Quatre. "Don’t you remember? At the end of the war Treize was fighting for the same things we were. We were both fighting against the White Fang and for peace and the safety of humanity! I hope that, when he gets out of here, he continues to fight for peace. Only this time it won’t be on the battlefield, but in the political arena in the Earth Sphere United Nation. That’s what I plan to do anyway."
Duo looked a little stricken at Quatre’s speech. "Yeah... I see. Well," He continued, recovering from his shock, "That may be all right for you rich and powerful types, but Shinigami will just stick to takin’ out the trash."
"Duo," said Hilde with annoyance, "please stop referring to yourself as a deity, and furthermore in the third person! It’s disturbing."
"Sure thing, babe." Duo leaned over and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "Well, ol’ Shinigami’s gotta get back to work now, my public is waiting," he said with a cheesy grin as he snapped his sunglasses open and put them on. Hilde looked over at Quatre and groaned. Quatre laughed a little beneath his breath. In the curtained bed, Treize stared up at the ceiling.
~He’s so passionate about his ideals. He defended me but he doesn’t even know me. I can tell he does not see me as an enemy, how did I ever see him as one? Yes, he has the right idea, I will do that, I will fight for peace in the world nation. This time, without mobile suits.~
Hilde was bored with the television. It was all news stories in the morning and evening, and those were good, but at one o’clock in the afternoon all you got were soaps, infomercials, and court TV. She had been watching a documentary about a pride of lions but she turned it off when it began to get into mating habits. "What kinda person wants to watch lions going at it?" she said to herself, "Maybe someone like Trowa..." She giggled and mentally chastised herself for thinking such mean things abut someone she barely even knew firsthand. Hilde looked up when Quatre walked into the room. Then she did a double take. "Quatre? You’re up and walking?"
Quatre laughed a little at the surprised look on Hilde’s face. "Yep! I’m out of here today. Wow, Duo was right, this room really is drab."
Hilde nodded and looked at her wilting daffodils forlornly. "Yeah, I’d throw these out but they’re the only thing lightening up this place."
"I promise to come here and visit, all right?"
"You’d better, I need someone to talk to."
"You could talk to Treize, you know. He’s not going to bite," said Quatre, lowering his voice to a whisper.
"He makes me nervous. How do you talk to him? I still see him as the commander of thousands."
"Including you?"
"For a little while, yes."
"He’s a great guy, just get to know him. I’m going to go say goodbye to him too, OK?"
"Bye, see ya around."
After giving Hilde a goodbye hug, Quatre approached Treize’s bedside. Treize looked up from the book he was reading. It was _A Tale of Two Cities._ He had borrowed it from Quatre after he was done with it. "You look well," he said, looking up, "are you leaving today?"
"Yes, I just wanted to say goodbye, since I don’t know whether our paths will cross again."
"We could always arrange to see each other once I am discharged."
~Is he... Is he asking me out on a date? Hahaha, don’t be silly Quatre.~
Still, Quatre was shocked to find that the prospect of going out on a date with Treize felt right somehow. But Quatre just chalked it up to foolish whims and replied, "Sure, I guess that would be good."
"Either way, I will have to return your book someday, once I finish it."
Quatre looked at Treize and, seeing only truth and good intentions, said, "Me too, well, goodbye, Treize."
"Yes, goodbye for now."
With that, Quatre walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.
~That was so strange, yet, I genuinely want to spend time with Treize, to get to know him. It’s like there is so much about him I don’t know, and it would take a lifetime to know it all. But I think I’d be OK with taking that lifetime to hear it all. Wow, now *that’s* the sleep deprivation talking. I’d better be able to sleep well tonight or else I’ll be a wreck later. And to think, he’s never read Charles Dickens’ _A Tale of Two Cities. _~
Quatre chuckled quietly to himself and opened the heavy door that led to the outside of the building. When he stepped outside he blinked thrice to adjust to the unfamiliar sunlight. The sky was blue and a soft breeze ruffled the Arabian pilot’s hair.
~So this is a world at peace? I could get used to this.~
Quatre walked down the steps and into the car that was waiting for him. It was finally time to go home and, as Duo said, to do a whole lot of work.
It was one month later and Treize stood on the same steps as Quatre had, looking at the same blue sky that the Winner boy had. ~So this is a world at peace? I could get used to this.~
Treize left directly to his estate in Luxembourg. Upon his arrival, he placed a call to the Winner family residence on L4. After being on hold for a minute, he was greeted by a very surprised Quatre.
"Treize, I… didn’t think you’d actually contact me," said the boy with surprise.
"I am a man of my word, and I still have to return this." He held up _A Tale of Two Cities_.
Quatre’s musical laughter resonated through the connection and into Treize’s office. "I see."
"So," continued the ginger-haired man, "would you like to come and visit me or would you like me to come to you?"
Quatre was not quite dumbfounded at Treize’s forwardness. "I will actually be visiting the Sank Kingdom at the end of the week for some sort of a celebratory occasion. Will you be in attendance as well?"
"Of course." Treize hadn’t planned to go to the Sank Kingdom, but he would go to spend a little time with this intriguing young blonde.
~Treize, remember, he *is* young. He may not feel any comfortable with me. He is so kind, so innocent. Somehow untainted by this war. He has seen and caused as much destruction as I, but he is still so fresh.~
"Well, I will see you there?" Quatre’s voice interrupted Treize’s near reverie.
"Yes, I will be looking forward to it."
~Is that a note of longing in your voice, young one? Maybe you understand me after all.~
Treize punched a button on the telecom to break the connection. He tilted his head back on his leather office chair and closed his eyes. There was a knock at the heavy oaken door of his study. "Come in, Lady." Lady Une hovered at the door before regaining her normal composure and nearly marching right up to Treize.
"I trust you are feeling well?" she inquired.
"Much better than before."
"That is good to hear. I came here to say goodbye to you. I will be working with the new government of the World Nation to preserve the peace on Earth and in the colonies. I am visiting you here to officially terminate my position as your assistant, even though the war’s conclusion effectively did so."
" I appreciate your consideration in this matter," said Treize with a smile. "But, Lady, you are always welcome at my home."
Lady Une nodded in ascent. She then turned to leave but doubled back on a whim. "You are going to that affair in Sank on Saturday, are you not?"
"I was originally not going to attend, but I was convinced otherwise."
"Oh?" Lady Une’s eyebrows went up a fraction of an inch. "And who, may I ask, would be the one to change your mind?"
Treize chuckled a little at that. "I will introduce you to him at the party, although I think that you may have already met."
Lady Une accepted that and made her exit softly.
~I wonder how she’ll react when she finds out whom I’m meeting at the gathering. Only till Saturday...~
