Love and Hate Relationship - Part One
-------------------------------------
From the moment I stepped out of my car in the Sank kingdom I knew I would
grow to hate the place. I didn't mind it at first, because there were
bound
to be battles there. And I loved battles. My whole life I had been trained
to fight. Fencing lessons, Thailand kickboxing, marksmanship with both
firearms and bows. Strategy, history, politics. My training, mental and
physical, was supposed to make me into something greater than a normal
human. I wasn't supposed to be the perfect soldier, no; I was supposed to
be
the perfect commander. I grew to love war, because that was all I knew,
even
though I'd never been in a battle. That was why I was so happy to go to
the
Sank kingdom. I thought I would be able to see a real battle up close. I
wasn't sent there to watch the battles, though - that was just a bonus. I
was sent there to spy on one Relena Peacecraft. And it changed the whole
course of my life.
* * *
The sun was gleaming off the waves of a clear blue sea - right into my
eyes - and the birds were singing - offkey, I might add - making for a
perfect - bloody perfection - day. I pulled up to the steps of a
classically
built school that was Relena Peacecraft's institute. I tugged at the
collar
of my uniform, already stifling. This whole place seemed designed to fit
into a painting on the mantlepiece of my grandfather. But, I had a
mission.
I was supposed to keep tabs on this Relena person. While my talents would
best serve elsewhere, I am the only one capable of performing this. The
Romafeller foundation needed someone to study in her school, and I'm the
only one they trusted who could plausibly enter the academy. It's for
young
girls who are or will be in powerful positions, and most of the members of
Romafeller are old men. I, on the other hand, am a 15 year old girl, and
the granddaughter of Duke Dermail, head of Romafeller, the current
superpower
of the Earth. I've gone through military school, and am slated to work my
way up the ranks to become head of the army - as soon as I'm old enough,
and provided there still is an army.
That's the reason why I'm supposed to spy on Relena. She and her country's
ideals of total pacifism are in direct opposition to Romafeller at the
moment, and they are gaining popularity across the world. If things keep
going her way Romafeller will have no power left, and no army for me to
control. Of course my motives are completely selfish, but in a world
that's
ever-changing like this one what better way to stay alive than to maintain
loyalty to oneself?
Relena herself greets me to the school, and I must begin to perform my
part
in this play. I pretend that she is the most fascinating and wonderful
person on earth. It sickens me. Still, I have to be polite. I also have to
test her responses to certain situations.
"Miss Relena, this certainly is a beautiful kingdom. I would hate to see
it
wiped out. How would you defend it if it was attacked right now?" My words
have the desired effect, and she launches into a speech about talking
things
over and achieving peace through discussion.
"I don't believe there are any foolish people in this world. Nobody wants
war, and I'm sure if we just talk things out everyone's desires would win
out and the fighting would stop."
What did she just say? No foolish people in the world? Good god, what is
this woman on? How the hell am I supposed to stand being around this girl?
"Miss Relena, I am a foolish person. I love wars." She looks shocked to
hear
my statement. I give her my little schtick about how war is a necessary
part
of human existence. We are total opposites, and I can tell we are going to
be at odds for the whole duration of my stay here. I might actually begin
to
enjoy this.
I spend most of my time attending these lectures and things. As she is
telling us more about total pacifism, I look around the room at all these
little sheep being led to their slaughter. No doubt when they are grown I
will be their opposition, I will be the one attacking their countries as
they sit helplessly by under the guise of peace. I make note of their
names
and faces as the first targets on my inevitable conquest of whatever part
of the world Romafeller has not captured. I look back to Relena, the
shepardess in her billowy white skirt and pink jacket. "Nerd," I say to
myself. I interrupt her speech and give *my* views. The other girls are
taken aback by my actions. I wish they would stop listening to Relena's
pointless drivel and start thinking on their own. That way I won't have to
invade their countries later on.
Finally, something interesting happens. It seems two gundam pilots are to
arrive hear shortly. One is a certain Heero Yuy - the object of Miss
Relena's
love. The other is a little blonde that seems sweet and unassuming, but of
course I know better. I think he is the Winner boy, Quatre, I remember his
face from somewhere. Funny how he is a Gundam pilot, as I recall his
family
was very much against fighting. He always asks the enemy to surrender, or
so I've heard. I suppose his family's ideals still influence him.
Admirable.
This Heero... he is handsome. No wonder Relena wants him. Dark hair and
blue
eyes, Japanese. Cut, muscular. Hn. I spend a lot of time watching him -
and
Quatre, of course - from a distance, gathering information.
He doesn't come to classes, and neither does his friend Quatre. But one
day,
I see him sitting alone in one of the gardens, staring out at that ocean.
"You seem to like this view," I say to him.
"Hn." Not much of a talker, this one.
"But I know about you, Heero Yuy. I know who you are. And I know you are
not
the sort to waste time looking at pretty sights. You are looking for
probable
points of attack, aren't you?"
That catches in interest. He looks up. "Who are you?" he asks.
"Oh, you know me. Dorothy Catalonia, one of Relena's students. We've met,
or
did you forget me so quickly?" Of course I know he didn't mean my name
when
he asked who I was. But I want to see how he will respond.
"Who are you really?"
I take a seat next to him. "Why, I am just a schoolgirl. Just because I
happen to know that Romafeller is likely to attack from over that ocean
using land, sea and air units in a massive strike against the Sank kingdom
doesn't make me any different from any of Relena's students, does it?" I
smirk. He raises an eyebrow at me. "Well, Heero Yuy, it's been a
pleasure."
I stand up and start to walk away.
A hand shoots out and grabs my wrist. "Sit," he tells me, like I am some
sort of dog. But I oblige. "Yes, Heero-san?"
"Tell me more about Romafeller's plans."
"I'm afraid I can't do that. Would you give away your plans to Duke
Dermail?"
"Are you saying you are on the side of Romafeller?" He pulls a gun
seemingly
out of nowhere. "If so, I will kill you."
I simply stand there, facing him. "Am I supposed to be afraid?" I think I
see
a look of shock on his stone face, but he regains composure quickly.
"I will kill you."
"That line of yours is getting old, Yuy." I smile at him, and he drops his
guard. "How about you meet me for lunch tomorrow here, in this spot, and
maybe I'll tell you something."
"Hn."
This time when I leave, nothing stops me. After a bit, I turn to look at
him,
but he is already gone. This should be interesting. I have a lunch date
with
Heero Yuy. Ah, the things I do for my mission.
