Game Review: Sword of the Beserk: Gut's rage

Sword of the Beserk, based of an anime/manga/book called Beserk, is for the Dreamcast. You are Gattsu (aka Guts) and have entered a town being destroyed by a virus and, you guessed it you must save it. But what Gut's is in it for is for his fiancee, Casca, who is mentally scarred from a previous battle, to cure her using the heart of the plant in which the virus harbors.

This game is basically a movie, with many, many cutscenes, and a developing storyline. The graphics for the FMV are fantastic, but some of the character designs could have used some work. The anime seems to have such a longer/better story with well-developed characters, but you just start in the middle of the story, without much explanation of the previous events. There is a in-game glossary, which sheds some light, but leaves you hanging. The gameplay is very repetitive, basically slash, walk a couple of feet, slash something else. The monsters are very creative, but lack any sense of life. I mean you have a sword the size of a NBA star and it still takes you 5-6 hits to kill the smallest enemies. This game, once you beat it, doesn't have much replay value, but if you beat it on diff. difficulty levels, you get some neat mini-games. This game is rated M for realistic violence and Gore. It deserves this, since when you hit something blodd splatters everywhere. This game is great if you can buy it used, or for a low price, since it has little replay value.
