Review: Blood the Last Vampire

One of the things Anime fans enjoy about Anime is that the characters and the world they live in are so detailed, they seem real. Blood, the Last Vampire, the latest title by Production IG, Creators of Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Jin-Roh and many other titles, doesn't give us that feeling. It is The Late 1960's in Yokota, Japan, at the US military base. A young girl, named Saya, working for a government agency (who's nationality we are never sure of) Is sent to kill vampires. Her past is uncertain and why she takes this job is too.

The animation is compleatly digital and at some points looks real. (not CG, but done on a computer) The plot is to destroy the creatures, but the whole background on their world is never stated. This makes for a very short (about 50 minutes) film, and leaves you hanging and confused. Despite the film being so short there is plenty of other background info. based in this world, mainly in Manga and books, but with only seeing the film, it leaves you craving for more. Saya reminds me of Vampire Hunter D, with her intentions never being made clear, just her actions shown. One of the odd things about this movie is that it is already partially in English (base) and has very little Japanese spoken, thus making little to translate. One things I concluded from the film is that there are some hidden political messages involved. You can see feelings of the Local Japanese and US "invaders", and discrimination of each. There is even Vietnam references. The movie has plenty of gore (hence the title) but nothing else offense. It still would be rated R though. It's worth a fent, but unless you are dying to get it, don't bother buying it. In the end, we get a movie where nothing else is stated besides the obvious and the need for knowledge goes unsatisfied.
