As the Ronins battle for the first time, the Ancient One stays mainly in the background, helping when needed. The first time the Ronin Warriors fight Anubis they are forced to create "The Circle of Light" around Mia and Yuli, who have no armors of their own, as a means of protection. This invovles intersecting all five armor powers to make a symbol that resembles a star. Because they did this, the Ronins were only able to fight Anubis in their sub-armor, not managing in the least to score near a crushing blow on the warlord. Seeing this, the Ancient One throws his staff at the circle of light and dispels it, enabling the Ronins to put on their Armors and cream Anubis. When they use their force united, Talpa gets worried and scatters the Ronins to where their armors were created. Again, the Ancient One is mainly in the background. He makes his first noticable appearance when he guides Sage to extend his Thunderbolt Cut even further then he previously had.
In Sage's second fight with Kale, the Ancient again appears and uses his staff to break Kale's darkness illusion, giving Sage an opportunity to score the victory. After the five Ronins are revived, the Ancient One comes to them carrying the body of Anubis, easily the strongest of Talpa's warlords who has been down on his luck. He reveals Anubis' true power and offers him to join the Ronins' cause. Anubis does not give the Ancient a straight answer and departs with much on his mind.
Then, when Talpa closes the castle gates, barring Ronin entry, the Ancient decides to challenge Talpa himself. He relys mainly on his magic and while he could have beaten Talpa right there, he sacrificed his physical form, making an energy bridge by which the Ronins could gain entry to the castle. Talpa, perhaps overconfident at defeating one of his most ardently hated enemies, allows the Ronins to arrive.
When Ryo is almost absorbed by Talpa and almost ready to give up, the Ancient's spirit calls on Wildfire and relates to him a story of the first time Talpa appeared in the mortal realm. In feudal Japan, nearly a thousand years ago from when Talpa appears and the Ronins fight him, Talpa emerges, bearing an armor much stronger than those of the humans of the day. Arrows shot at Talpa were burned by his magic and little could stand against him. However, the Ancient One, in battle armor with White Blaze accompanying him, appears with a sword whose handle resembles his staff. He defeats Talpa, claiming to be a guardian of the mortal realm and while Talpa's spirit departs, his armor remains. The Ancient One then decides to split Talpa's armor into nine pieces, or nine armors: the Armor of Wildfire, the Armor of Torrent, the Armor of Halo, the Armor of Strata, the Armor of Hardrock, the Armor of Illusion, the Armor of Venom, the Armor of Darkness and the Armor of Cruelty. The Ancient, still in spirit form, tells Ryo that the armors are a connected to Talpa but not necessarily to his evil. Ryo is really stunned by this, but then Talpa and the Ancient speak the same words, one voice overlapping the other, as if they agree. Ryo somehow finds the strength within himself to keep fighting and draws on the other Ronin's powers to form the Inferno Armor, an Armor not created by the Ancient.
The Ancient One then uses what power he has left in his spirit to tell the Ronins to sharpen their skills, giving a message to each one. He chooses Anubis as his successor and he does not appear in the series again.
