Zidane is the main character of FFIX. He is a thief and a member of the theatre group called Tantalus. He specializes with daggers and thief swords. Girls often swoon over his boyish good looks. At 16, he doesn't know much about his origins and is orphaned at a young age. He fights on the side of good and is very optimistic, trying to cheer those up around him who may be feeling down.
Princess Garnet is beloved by her subjects, but is worried about her corrupted mother, Queen Brahne. She is one of the two remaining survivors of an ancient tribe of summoners who can also use white magic. She is also 16 like Zidane. The two have deep feelings for each other, though they are too shy to admit it. Garnet uses rods and rackets to assist her in casting magic.
Eiko is a very stubborn six year old and very determined. She has the same abilities as Garnet: the power to summon Eidolons (magical beings/forces) and the power of white magic. Unlike Garnet, Eiko still has the horn on her head which allows her to communicate with Eidolons. She insists she is grown up, having lived on her own for several years, her only remaining family are a group of small furry winged creatures called moogles. Eiko uses rackets and flutes to aid her in battles.
Quina is a very odd being. A member of the Qu tribe, Quina is a gourmand, cooking only the best of meals. Tasting new foods is Quina's goal and is why he joins Zidane and his friends. One of Quina's favorite foods are frogs. Quina is a master of blue magic, and with his fork-weapons, he can learn a new spell when consuming a weakened enemy.
Vivi is a black mage with very powerful spells, especially at the young age of 9. Vivi is a tormented soul, learning he was created as a weapon for destruction along with the rest of the black mages. He overcomes his doubt of himself and becomes a very powerful member of Zidane's team. Vivi's black magic is powered by staves.
Steiner is the Captain of the Knights of Pluto, Queen Brahne's top soldiers. His sworn duty is to protect Princess Garnet. The 35 year old knight is loyal to the royal throne, even when it is obvious of the queen's wrongdoings. Steiner often blames misfortunes on Zidane, not trusting the common thief. He protects Garnet with his swords. With Vivi's assistance, his sword can become a magical weapon as well, causing magic damage as well as physical damage to an opponent.
Freya is a Royal Dragon Knight from the kingdom of Burmecia, a civilization of rat-like beings. At 21 years old, she leaves her kingdom searching for her long lost love, but soon joins Zidane in his quests. She uses spears and lances and knows the skills of the dragon knights which help protect her friends in battle.
Amarant is a bounty hunter who is more of a loner than a team player. He joins Zidane only to try to figure out his forgiving, good-intended nature. The 26 year old assassin specializes in fist weapons and has the ability to damage enemies by throwing weapons at them.
Choco is a large ostrich like bird known as a Chocobo. Choco befriends Zidane and provides transportation for him and his friends. Choco also helps Zidane find useful items. When trained enough, Choco gains the abilities to climb mountains, cross rivers and seas, and eventually he learns to fly.
Kuja is a mysterious person to Zidane and his friends when they first encounter him. He manipulates Garnet's mother, Queen Brahne, to start wars with other kingdoms. Kuja is a very powerful person, destroying his own creator. Like Zidane, he has a tail, but denies his true identity and hides the extra appendage. When greater evil surfaces, Kuja realizes he has only been a tool of destruction and finally turns to the side of good.
Mikoto is like Zidane and Kuja in that she has a tail. She is about the same age as Zidane and has great potential and talent, though she has yet to use it yet. She was also to become a weapon of destruction, until Zidane arrived and showed her that she had the choice to make other options.
