Theory of Combined Powers

Perhaps you heard Azulongmon during episode 37. Perhaps you didn't. As far as I can tell, the one knows just as much as the other -- most of the people who heard him couldn't make heads or tails of it.

This is a theory of mine that might be disproved before the end of the season... If it is not, I have the feeling that I will be able to stick by it as long as I like. If not... well, there's always the fanworld, right?

The theory is based on one simple premise: Azulongmon's statement that the crests of Light and Hope are equivalent. There are many possible reasons for this, most of them deeply philosophical. I won't waste your time with them -- it is not really a topic for a fansite such as mine to cover (at least not yet).

I'm sure all of you are familiar with the theory that supernatural powers can be shared by "blood bonding." My theory is similar... the crests are not and do not represent supernatural powers, really, so that would be an overly simplistic view. What they represent -- what makes them work -- is the traits, the strengths, inside each person. Each DigiDestined has a different strength, a different force that drives them along life, that is uniquely their own. Except, according to Azulongmon, Hikari and Takeru... how Hope and Light are equivalent I daren't guess, but I can suggest a possibility for why such a redundancy was allowed to exist.

Takari is the most painfully obvious real couple in the show (by "real," I mean a couple in which both of them clearly like each other). Let's, for the sake of an argument, say that it's real in the sense that they actually will get together and marry in the future. Let's also say that a DigiDestined's work really is never done -- that, even after they've settled down and had kids, they still have to go on being DigiDestined. And to be a DigiDestined, you must be able to have a Digimon that can digivolve to a higher form to be able to fight. Which, in all practicality, means that you must have an operational crest or digi-egg -- Champion is all well and good, and may win battles, but it's not much to be fighting a war with. To do this, you must retain the value that your crest represents, which is where my theory comes in.

So, why must Light and Hope be the same? My answer is that it is because it was foreseen that there would be Takari, the two crests were created equal. Along with love and marriage (hopefully) comes a sharing of ideas and beliefs -- which, of course, clouds the once clear-cut ideas that they originally had. I'm not trying to say that that's a bad thing -- it only borders on it because it is dealing with DigiDestined who need to have their main virtue, at least, be just as powerful as it was when they were children. So if two random DigiDestined (let's say Sora and Taichi, just as a random couple) got together, their traits would blur with each other. Sora's soft, patient, ever-caring love would soon have Taichi's more fierce "temporal-nearsightedness" intermix with it, just as Taichi's sometimes blind fire would be tempered by her gentleness. Although this would probably do the both of them good, their original pure virtues as children would no longer be as powerful.

That Taiora example was just that -- an example of why they could not be allowed by fate to be together. Takari, however, can be real. When they share ideas, they will be very close to the same -- close enough that their ideas will remain mostly pure. With this purity of thought they will keep the strength that they need to be able to remain and fight as DigiDestined. For this they were given equivalent crests.
