Chapter 3: Adjusting
Duo walked through the streets of Tokyo. Luna walking by his side. He observed the way life was in this time. He looked at the way people dressed, how they interacted with one another. The buildings were somewhat different but had almost the same structure as the one's in his time. He watched the activity, and listened to the way people talked.
"So this is Heero's nationally." He said to no one in particular.
Luna heard him, looking up at him, questioning.
He noticed this, a side smile on his face. "Heero is someone I work with at times. He's of Japanese decent."
"Oh I see." Luna said, keeping up with his pace. "Tell me about this future you come from."
"There's not much to tell really." Duo answered, thoughtfully. "Not when war is the only thing that exists'."
Luna raised her eye brows in astonishment. "War."
Duo nodded, thinking.
The silence unnerved her so she decided to change the subject. "So where would you like shop at first?" She asked cheerfully.
He looked at the cat, forgetting she was there for a moment. "Shopping. Oh yeah, I forgot that's what we were doing."
"See any place in particular." Luna asked him, eyeing different shops.
He looked at a few stores, arching his eyebrow, trying to decide. "What about that one." He pointed at a fancy men's store, the name Pacific Fury written on the front.
Luna smiled. "Why not, you have a credit card."
The phone rang more than 10 times, no one answered it. Serena listened to sound. Not moving from her position on the bed, she was sitting up, leaning against the wall, hugging a pillow to her chest. She didn't want to answer the phone. She knew who it was, and didn't want to talk to him at the moment.
Darien put the phone back down. It was his tenth time calling. He didn't know why Serena wouldn't answer any of his calls. Ever since their date last night, he wondered why she left right after their kiss. Not only that, but she seemed to be out of it the whole night. It wasn't like her at all. He put on his green jacket, and picked up his car keys. Thinking about what he should do about Serena, before he left his apartment, heading for his job.
Quatre looked at Duo's Deathsylthe, he had finished the repairs. He was typing something else on the computer when there was a silver flash. He shielded his eyes with his hand, when he looked again, there stood the same women that took Duo away a few days ago. He stared at her, waiting for her to speak.
"I am here to tell why I took your comrade. There are some things you need to understand." She finally spoke.
"Sailor Pluto, am I right." He said. She nodded.
"Where's Duo?" He asked, getting up from his chair, and stood infront of her.
"He is safe."
"But where?" Quatre arched his eyebrow.
She shook her head. "I'm afraid I can't tell you yet. All I can tell you is that the time is drawing near when he has to reclaim what is right fully his."
"I'm afraid I don't understand." He frowned. "What is it about Duo that is so important, and what exactly did you mean by Prince?
Pluto sighed. "I suppose you have a right to know."
Quatre sat down and pulled up a chair for her. She smiled at his hospitality and accepted.
Duo selected eight different sets of cloths, and took them up to cashier. He did as Luna instructed, he signed his name and watched as the cashier put his things into a bag.
"Here you go sir." The salesman said, handing him two bags.
"Thank you." Duo replied, taking the bags and made his way to the door, Luna following him. He was too busy putting the credit card into his wallet, not seeing the person enter through the door. Next thing he knew, he crashed into someone. He looked up to see a guy dressed in a green suit.
"Hey watch it." The guy said rudely.
"You watch it. With what your wearing, you need a fashion tip. Lose the suit." Duo smirked and walked out the door. Luna hurrying by before she could be recognized.
Darien just glared at him.
Serena walked through the park, hoping to run into Michelle or Amara, but she didn't see them anywhere. So she continued walking, looking at the flowers that grew not far from the fountain. She looked at the roses. Looking for one in particular. A peach one. But she couldn't find one. Somehow this disappointed her. She kept thinking about her dreams. That face seemed to be everywhere. She just couldn't stop thinking about him.
"Who are you Duo?" She wondered, sighing.
Sailor Pluto had just finished telling Quatre the whole story about Duo.
"So that's who Duo really is." Quatre whispered, shocked.
"Yes. So you see. It is important that he be reunited with his fiancée'." She explained.
Quatre nodded, understanding.
"I have to go now, if you feel that your teammates need to know this, then you may tell them." Sailor Pluto said, getting up.
"Wait." He said. "Will we ever see Duo again?"
Pluto smiled. "Your paths will cross again. I promise." With that, she held up her staff and disappeared.
Quatre sat there, staring at the floor, the information settling into his mind.
Duo walked out of the elevator, Luna on his shoulder, exhausted. They had been to over twenty stores. He now wore lose jeans, a white T-shirt, and a black jacket. He took his shades of as he neared his room. The bell man followed him with the rest of his shopping bags, which was many. He opened the door to his room and entered. The bellman following him in.
"Where should I put these sir?" The boy asked him.
"Uh. Just put them on them in the closet." Duo pointed, as Luna jumped off his shoulder and on to the bed.
The boy did as he was told, then left the room.
"Man that was a cool day." Duo said, collapsing on to the bed, resting his head on his arms.
"Easy for you to say." Luna raised her eye brows, shaking her pawn. "I have never been on my feet that long."
"Those credit cards are amazing. I can't believe I spent that much in one day." He chuckled.
Luna smiled. "I'm glad your enjoying yourself your highness. You seem to be adjusting very well in this time."
Duo grinned. "I guess I am."
A week later........
Serena rested her head on Reye's table, feeling real tired. She listened as her friends gossiped, not really interested in what they were talking about. Instead, she closed her eyes.
Duo stood on the balcony, looking up at the full Earth, waiting for his princess.
"Duo." Serenity said, stepping out on to the balcony. He turned around, acknowledging her presence.
"Soon we will be together once again my love." He said before disappearing.
"Duo wait........" Her voice trailed off, holding out her hand.
"Hey meatball head. Wake up." Reye said, shaking her friend.
"Huh." Serena sat up, rubbing her eyes.
"Oh Serena, you fell asleep again." Lita shook her head. "Were supposed to be studying."
"I know. I know." Serena yawned.
"So what were you dreaming about? Darien." Reye teased.
"No I wasn't." Serena scowled.
"Well it sounded like you said his name." Mina shrugged.
"Well I wasn't dreaming about him." Serena replied, crossing her arms.
"Well that's a first." Amy said, staring at a page in her text book.
Serena sighed. "Where's Luna?" She asked, changing the subject.
"She said she had something to do." Artemis said.
"Oh." Serena responded, looking at her text book.
"So why have you been avoiding Darien lately?" Raye asked.
Serena was caught off guard by the question and tried to think of an excuse. "I haven't been.....avoiding him."
"Oh yeah. How come he called me a few days ago asking about you. He said you haven't been answering his calls." Raye asked, raising an eyebrow.
Serena bowed her head, not knowing what to say.
"Are you two having problems?" Mina asked.
"Well no......"Serena answered.
"Then why are you acting like this towards him?" Raye stared at her, questioning.
"I.....I have to go." She said, picking up her books, and taking off.
"Serena wait." Lita said, getting up to follow her.
"Lita." Artemis spoke. "Let her go, she has a lot on her mind."
Later that evening........
Luna laid on her stomach, waiting for Artemis, watching Duo sleep, when she heard someone approaching. She looked up to see Sailor Pluto standing infront of her.
"Pluto." She said.
"Time is drawing near. Duo will soon have to embrace his destiny. "
Luna looked at him, then back at her, nodding. "I wonder what the Sailor Scouts are going to say about all this?"
"They are going to have to accept it." Sailor Pluto shrugged. "He is the true Earth Prince."
"And what will Darien say to this?" Luna asked, worry in her voice.
Sailor Pluto sighed. "He will not be very happy about it I'm afraid, but there is nothing he can do about it."
"So what can we do to insure that he does not interfere with them?" The cat asked her.
"There is nothing we can really do. Darien is going to have to accept it one way or another." Luna shook her head, wondering what would happen once the time came to inform them about this.
"I've come to tell you that in a few days, you must bring Serena here. It is almost time for her and Duo to be reunited." Sailor Pluto explained.
Luna nodded. "It will be done."
Duo clenched his pillow as he slept, sweat trickling down the side of his cheek.
"Serenity." Duo cried, on his knees, clutching his wound on his shoulder. " I won't let you harm her."
Jedite smirked. "On the contrary Prince Duo. There is nothing you can do to stop me or my Queen, she will have The Moon Kingdom and the Universe."
"Over my dead body." Duo screamed.
"I can't arrange that easily." Jedite said holding up his sword and pointing it at him. "With you gone, a new Prince will take away your kingdom and your beloved Princess."
"You traitor." The Prince glared at his former guard.
Jedite laughed. "I am, so what."
"You will pay for this Jedite. You hear me. You will pay."
"Is that a threat your highness." Jedite said before plunging the blade into Duo's chest.
Duo screamed in pain. "No! Serenity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Duo opened his eyes and sat up, breathing hard, sweat covering his body. He looked around the room and ran a hand though his hair, which was down. He saw that Artemis was asleep on the other side of him, curled up into a ball. He petted the cat's forehead and laid back down. Thinking about his dream. That was the most intense dream he ever had. Now he totally believed what Sailor Pluto and the cats had told him. He had to find her.
Serena sat on her bed, looking at her wedding dress. Her wedding was tomorrow. She was excited and nervous at the same time. Soon she would be married to the only person she ever loved. She smiled as she thought about her Prince, he would be arriving tonight. A knock at the door brought her out of her thoughts.
"Come in." She said, expecting it to be Duo. Queen Serenity entered the room, a sad expression on her face. The Princess was disappointed at first then saw the look on her mother's face and her smile faded. "What is it mother?"
The Queen was reluctant to answer, but knew her daughter needed to know. "I'm afraid there won't be a wedding tomorrow."
"How can that be....Duo is on his way here now."
"I hate to tell you this my daughter, but Duo is.........dead." Her mother bowed her head.
"What!!!!!!!" The princess exclaimed. "It can't be. It just can't......
"I'm sorry........"The Queen whispered, coming closer to her daughter, holding out her hand.
Tears formed in Serenity's eyes and she ran out of the room. "No!!!!!!!!!!" She screamed.
Serena woke up with tears in her eyes. She let them fall, and cover her eyes with her hands. Luna woke up, knowing why she was crying and sat up.
"Serena. Are you alright?" She asked in a comforting voice.
Serena shook her head, and continued to cry.
A few days later........
Soft music could be heard. Trowa listened, the sound soothed him. He reached Quatre's room, and knocked on the door. The music stopped. "Come in."
Trowa entered the room, seeing his friend sitting on a chair, holding his violin. "Yes Trowa." Quatre asked.
"Heero would like to speak with you."
"About what?" Quatre asked, putting away his instrument.
"About Duo's disappearance." Trowa folded his arms, leaning against the door.
"Really. Didn't think he cared."
Trowa arched his eyebrow, but didn't say anything.
Quatre sighed, getting up, and the two left the room.
"Serena, for the last time, why are you avoiding Darien?" Raye demanded, catching up to her friend, pulling on her sleeve, stopping her.
Serena only looked away, not knowing what to say.
"Well Serena. I'm waiting." Raye crossed her arms, tapping her foot.
"I can't talk about this Raye."
"Why not?"
"You wouldn't understand......."Serena's voice trailed off.
"Try me." Raye titled her head to the side.
"It's just not the same anymore." She shook her head.
"What is?"
"I have to go Raye." Serena turned away, running down the side walk, leaving Raye confused.
At the Hotel's swimming pool, Duo lay sprawled out on a beach chair, wearing a pair of blue swimming trunks, no shirt, enjoying the suns rays. He liked this time period very much, no war, no Oz or Romafeller Foundation, and no suffering. He could actually relax, something he hadn't been able to do in years. He smiled, resting his arms on the chair’s arm rests.
"Man this is the life....." Duo sighed, pushing up his sun glasses, taking a sip of his drink.
Luna sat on a chair next to him, wiping a sweat drop of her forehead with her paw. "Goodness, it's hot out here." She complained.
"That's what makes it great." Duo joked. "The sun is giving me a great tan."
"Well you had better not get to much of it or you'll get burned."
"Yeah, yeah, I know." He chuckled. "Wouldn't want to end up looking like a lobster now would I."
Luna laughed at his joke, then all of a sudden stopped, seeing a face she hadn't seen in such a long time.
Duo looked at her, wondering why she stopped laughing all of a sudden. He looked in the same direction she was. He saw a couple setting up their beach chairs. The guy had blond wavy hair, and the girl had long black hair tied in a pony tail.
"Do you know them?" He asked her, taking of his shades, and sitting up.
Luna didn't say anything at first, still staring at them. "I knew him." She said finally.
"Really." Duo raised his eyebrows. Curious.
Luna blushed. "I was in love with him once."
Duo took a better look at him, he seemed nice, by the way him and his girl were talking, and laughing about something. "How'd you meet him?"
Luna smiled. "He saved my life. I was having a hard time crossing the street, and a car almost hit me, but he caught me just in time."
"Wow. Sounds like some save." Duo raised his eyebrows.
"It was, and I couldn't believe he risked his life to save me." Luna answered, keeping her gaze on him.
"So what's his name anyway?" Duo asked, taking another sip of his drink.
"Kickaru." Luna sighed, looking away. "And that’s his girlfriend Himiko."
Duo stared at the two, and then back at Luna, who seemed to have lost interest in them. She was sitting up, staring at the pool’s water, trying to ignore them.
"Aw. Luna." He smiled, petting her forehead gently.
She smiled and purred.
"Well, I haven’t seen you in a while." Said a male voice.
Duo looked up apprehensively at first, then calmed down once he saw that it was the guy that Luna had been staring at.
"How’ve you been?" He asked, picking up the cat, and petting her. She meowed joyfully.
Duo raised an eyebrow, a side smile on his face, as he watched the guy talk to her, he knew she why she was meowing instead of talking.
"Is she yours?" Kickaru asked him. "Uh......I guess you could say that, for now anyway."
Duo grinned, pushing his bangs out of his face.
"She’s beautiful." Kicharu said, putting her back on the chair.
Duo chuckled. "Yeah, I guess she is, for a cat? He joked.
Luna glared at him.
"Luna, I’m just kidding." Duo raised his hands up.
Kickaru laughed. "Well, take good care of her. See ya Luna." He said, then walked back to his beach chair.
Duo watched him and chuckled. Yeah he was nice enough. At least he hadn’t forgotten Luna. Then all of a sudden, Luna pounced onto his stomach.
"Hey!" Duo exclaimed.
"How dare you make fun of me." The cat said, showing her claws.
"Luna I was just kidding!" Duo raised his eyebrows.
"You wanted to see me." Quatre asked, entering the living room, along with Trowa. He saw that Wufei was also in the room. He wondered what was going on.
"Wufei tells me that he saw you talking to that women." Heero stared coldly at him. "What did she say to you?"
Quatre stared back at him. Knowing he had to tell his teammates. "You guys are probably not going to believe me but, this is what she told me." He started.
Serena finally stopped running once she passed the arcade. She stopped to catch her breath, when she felt a hand touch her shoulder, she turned to see Darien.
"Serena, we need to talk." He said, grabbing her hand and pulling her into an alley. Once they were alone, he let go of her hand and put his hands into his pockets. Serena stared at the ground, folding her arms.
"So what do you want to talk about?" She asked.
"I want to know why you’ve been avoiding me, and not answering any of my calls." He answered.
"It’s personal Darien."
"Why can’t you tell me?" He asked.
"I just can’t alright." Serena closed her eyes. "Look, you get to have secrets right, so why can’t I?"
Darien looked at her confused. "What do you mean by secrets?"
"Never mind." She shook her head. "I’m not in the mood to talk alright."
"No it isn’t alright." He said, putting his hands on her shoulders. "I’m not letting you leave until you tell me why your acting like this."
"Darien let me go." She said, trying to move away from him.
"No."
"I said let go." Serena shouted, slapping him across the face, with that he let go of her, and she ran as fast as she could, unshed tears in her eyes.
Luna was on her way home when she heard someone call her name. She turned around, and saw Trista standing there.
"Trista." Luna said, walking up to her.
"Tonight you must bring Serena to Duo. The dreams are hurting both of them too much, and we can no longer keep them apart from each other."
Luna nodded. "I know. Now Serena will finally be with her true prince."
Later that night........
Serena laid on her bed, crying into her pillow. She couldn’t believe what just happened between her and Darien. But things just weren’t the same. She was in love with someone else, but she wasn’t sure if he even existed. And that hurt even more, to be in love with a dream.
Luna climbed in through the window and on to the bed, she saw that Serena was hurting, and knew that the time had come for her to be reunited with her real Prince.
"Serena." She whispered. "Come with me."
Duo sat on the bed, looking at the ring he wore, it was so beautiful. He studied the crest, it was blue, with a symbol written on it. He couldn’t make out what it meant, and was about to ask Artemis about it, when he heard a knock at the door. He got up and opened the door, to come face to face with the girl in his dreams. He stared at her, shocked.
"Duo." She whispered, raising her eyebrows in shock.
