STARRY NIGHT

The next morning, Carrot woke with a start. He looked around and was shocked to realize he’d never returned to the cabin. He’d fallen asleep on a bench in the park, his head resting against Tira’s. Perhaps it was for the best that he’d stayed, something within Carrot said, and he shuddered at the obvious reference to his brother and Gateau. Carrot gently shook Tira to wake her, and she mumbled something as her eyes flickered open. He looked down at her with a smile as bright and cheerful as the sunrise.

“Morning, sis.”

Tira smiled back and playfully poked his face, “Ohayo, niisan.”

They both rose and had little ‘yawn-n-stretch’ session before leaving the park, hand in hand. On their way back to the cabin, they came upon a stand on the side of the dirt path, with a sign that said, “Parfait’s Floral Road-side Emporium.”

“Hold on, Tira, I’d like to stop here for a sec...”

Tira bounded into hers and Chocolate’s dorm, with an usual bounce in her step. Chocolate was sitting on the edge of her bed, brushing her hair when she saw Tira prance happily into their room.

“Ohayo, Oneesama,” Chocolate said, “You’re certainly in a good mood today. Where were you last night anyway?”

Tira didn’t answer, instead, she took one of the two red carnations she was holding and handed it to Chocolate.

“From Carrot.”

Meanwhile, Carrot carried the rest of his purchase back to the boy’s dorm, and tiptoed quietly up to their room. He knocked softly. No answer. Slightly afraid of what he might see, Carrot opened the door a bit and peeked inside. He was shocked to find the beds...

...Unoccupied...

...And both neatly made...

Carrot shut the door, puzzled, and then went out to the porch. Standing at the steps, he saw Marron and Gateau, out on the grass, with their backs to Carrot. Marron was lying in Gateau’s lap as his partner lovingly put flowers in his hair.

As much as Carrot wanted to be disgusted, he found he could not be. It was just too endearing. He shook his head and sighed, unable to supress a small smile. Without making his presence known, Carrot laid a bouquet of yellow roses on the porch steps and went back inside.
