episode 2

Kye, Janie, and Daniel stepped into their home. The house was white on the outside, and decoratively furnished on the inside. As soon as Kye walked in, she saw a large reflection of herself in a mirror beside the door. A chandelier hung above her, and she could see a large dinner table off to the right. She walked a further into the living room and saw a huge stereo system and a television larger than she had ever seen in her life. Kye gazed around in amazement, taking in as much as she could at one moment. “Kye, would you like to see your room?” Janie put her arm around Kye’s shoulders and walked her upstairs. There she saw a room, fully decorated with a bed, desk, and closet. The bed had yellow and blue covers on it, giving the room a bright glow. The desk was empty except for a few stuffed animals sitting on the topmost shelf. She flung open the closet, and it too was empty. Kye put down her bag and started to unpack. “I’ll help you do that.” Janie smiled and walked over. She frowned at Kye’s ripped jeans and faded shirts. “No, no...this will not do...” Janie shook her head and closed the bag. “We’re going shopping!” She exclaimed. “...shopping?” Kye looked quizzically at Janie. “I never go shopping..” she thought. Before she could say another word, she was whisked away by Janie and the next thing she knew, she was strolling about in the mall. All Kye did was merely shake her head yes or no as Janie picked out all kinds of clothes. The two walked out with bags and bags of clothes and shoes. Janie clapped her hands in joy as she watched Kye wear her new outfits. “Don’t you think she’s just adorable?” She asked Daniel who smiled and nodded. That summer, Kye spent most of her days with her mother, going shopping, watching movies, and doing other things she had never gotten a chance to do at the orphanage. When Daniel accused Janie of spoiling Kye, she just said she was letting her catch up on all she had missed before. Kye’s life went on monotonously until that one September day she was enrolled in school. She was a fourth grader at Oak Springs Elementary. She met a girl named Cassi, and became friends instantly. Cassi had only a mother, and could relate a little bit to Kye’s previous life. Fourth grade passed, fifth grade passed as well, and Kye made many new friends at Oak Springs. She met Andy, whom she had a slight crush on, and Tony, whom she thought was just plain stupid. She also befriended Kasey and Christine. The four girls became the best of friends until they had to split up for middle school. Cassi, Andy, and Kye transferred to a private school nearby, which was well known as a good school. Cassi and Kye carpooled for the next two years. “Oh....wow...” Kye stopped in her tracks. “What? What’s wrong?” Cassi asked, looking in the direction Kye was staring. She saw nothing but a group of guys. “Nothing’s wrong, I think I love this school.” Kye smiled. “Huh? I don’t get it! Explain to me!” Cassi pleaded. “You’ll see later.” Kye laughed as she flipped her gorgeous brown hair. First period went by slowly, the math teacher drawling on in her soporific tone. Second period was a little more fun, the teacher cracked jokes the whole period. Third period PE was extremely boring. She did not know anyone in that class, and sat alone, occasionally picking up a ball and shooting it. When the shower bell rang, a huge group of guys from the basketball team came barging out of the gym. She recognized one as the adorable guy she had seen earlier that day. He looked her and smiled. She could have melted on the spot. “Is he smiling at me? If I turn around to see if anyone’s behind me, I’ll make a complete fool out of myself.” Kye thought. She smiled back, and he came over to where she was sitting. “Hi.” He said. Kye looked at him quizzically, she had never known anyone who said hi to her without knowing her. He was a bit taken aback and jogged away. “Oh, no. I blew it. I lost my only chance.” Kye slumped. “How stupid could I be?” She walked into the locker room, her head down. She got dressed and the day continued. The days continued, one by one. She never got a chance to talk to that basketball guy again, although she wanted so earnestly to meet him. They passed by each other every day without a word. “Kye!” Cassi yelled from across the field. Kye turned slowly, and waved at Cassi who came running. “Guess what?” She panted. “What?” Kye asked. “I found the cutest dog at the pet shop and my mom said I could get it if I got the money!” She exclaimed. “Really?” Kye’s eyes brightened. “I’ll help you get the money for the dog!” She offered. “Thank you, Kye! Ooh, you just have to see it! It’s the cutest thing.” Cassi looked as if she was in another world for a moment. “Hey, wake up.” Kye snapped her fingers on front of Cassi’s eyes. “Lunch is over, let’s go to class.” She started walking. The two girls spent the next two days in vain trying to ask their friends for money to buy the puppy. Getting a job was impossible, they were only thirteen. They saved up all their allowance, and never bought lunch unless they were dying of starvation. Still, they barely had the $75 that was needed for the dog. “In one more month, we’ll have enough money!” Cassi shouted, counting up dollar bills in Kye’s room. “See, we have $50, right now, and if we put in your allowance and mine, that’s $80!” She smiled. “Whoohoo! All right!” Kye stood up and whirled around. Janie came barging in the room, her short hair still wet, and her makeup not applied yet. “Oh, Cassi! Hello, I didn’t know you were here. Kye! Mommy’s friend has a little dog that they absolutely can’t keep at their house. She wants to know if it’s all right with you if we take care of it.” Janie told her. Kye stifled a laugh, and looked at Cassi. “Well, mom, I’ll think about it.” Kye replied. “OK, tell me soon, because we’re going to pick the dog up tonight if you say OK.” Janie closed the door behind her as she hummed a tune from her favorite song. “Wow, this is a coincidence.” Kye giggled. “I know! Omigosh, how could we both be getting a pet at the same time? That’s just so weird.” Cassi said, plopping down on Kye’s bed. “Yea” Kye responded. “So, should I get it or not?” Kye asked, flipping over on her side to face Cassi. “Well, if it’s a cute dog, duh! Why not get it? Your mom is letting you have one. I mean, if you don’t like it or it becomes a hassle you can always give it away.” Cassi sat up. “That’s true.” Kye said. “I think I’ll get it!” She stared at the ceiling. “Yea...I will.” Kye repeated. “Cassi!” Janie called from downstairs. “Your mother is here to pick you up!” She yelled. “Oh, it’s 4:30 already?” Cassi stood abruptly, grabbing her backpack and running downstairs. “Bye, Kye!” She yelled. “Bye!” Kye yelled back, as the door closed, and Cassi and her mother drove off into the afternoon sunset. “Kye, let’s go see the dog now!” Janie called. “OK.” Kye walked downstairs, putting on a sweater as she walked. They hopped into the silver car and drove off to what they both thought would only be a mere pet.
