Revolutionary Girl Utena: Q & A

While watching the last 2 arcs of the RGU series, I came up with a lot of questions. I asked TB a few things, and here are some of those questions with her answers. It would probably help if you read of on the Archetypes of Carl Jung page, since we refer to archetypes a lot in some of these questions.

1 Q (me) - Episode 31: Does Anthy have a brother complex like Nanami? It seems whenever Utena would go out with Akio, Anthy would seems somewhat jealous. Is it that she doesn't want Akio (the prince) chasing after any girls (princesses)?
1 A (TB) - Well let me ask you a question. If you were Anthy and you were sleeping with your brother; how would you feel if another girl, even one you might be in love with, was being courted by the man you were sleeping with? Another question, if Anthy is in love with Utena (as the story strongly suggests) who is she really jealous of; her brother's attention to Utena, or Utena's attention to her brother?

2 Q (me) - Episode 34: When the flashback was shown with Anthy as a child and Dios, the prince; so Anthy is Dios' sister. And she could not receive his protection because of that; which makes her the "witch". But she still wanted to keep Dios for herself, and the citizens killed her because she would not let him go?
2 A (TB) - Not exactly. Anthy is perceived to be the "witch" by her brother, Dios, but his view is skewed because he has not fulfilled his role as "the prince". Because he did not fulfill his role as "the prince", he became "the wanderer", doomed to repeat his journey over and over until he gets it right. But he himself refuses to complete the journey, therefore, he can never become "the prince". It was his job to save all the princesses in the world but it became too much for him and the people came after him. He should have done his job by sacrificing himself for the common good, but instead he allowed Anthy to take the people's swords of anger in his place. Therefore Anthy fulfilled his role. Because he did not fulfill his role, he has an incomplete view of women. He perceives Anthy as evil because he has yet to meet "the good mother" and has not obtained his princess; those two women come later in a princes journey, but he never got that far. So Anthy is not a witch; her love for her brother caused her to take his place forever and suffer forever. She thought she deserved to be mistreated because she fully accepted her role, which is why she never complained about being the Rose Bride. Later, Utena tries to take Akio's place and remove the swords from Anthy, but she can't because she is a woman and cannot be "the prince" (at least that's the way it is in this anime)

3 Q (me) - Episode 35: What was the significance of Akio having Touga give Utena a present for him?
3 A (TB) - Akio was trying to manipulate both Touga and Utena, as for the reason for the gift, I don't know. At this point Akio was trying to seduce Utena, along with Touga and Saionji. The two guys somehow fit into his plan.

4 Q (me) - Episode 36: Was Akio trying to make Utena a princess? If so, then why? Maybe so she wouldn't become the prince who would free Anthy?
4 A (TB) - Akio was trying to make her his princess by seducing her. Only he fails to realize that he can't gain a princess without completing his journey; therefore he could never have her. He was also trying to make Anthy his princess by sleeping with her; in essence he was trying to change his image of her as a witch and into that of a princess. Since he was no longer a prince, but the prince's antithesis, the wander, Anthy was no longer a princess, but became the princess' antithesis, the fatal siren. But here's the twist; usually the fatal siren seduces the prince by sexually enslaving him, but this time the would-be-prince enslaves the siren. Yet either way, Akio comes out the loser.

5 Q (me) - Episode 36: Did Touga fight Utena because he wanted to save he from the responsibility of bringing the world revolution? Did he really love Utena?
5 A (TB) - Whether Touga loved Utena is a matter of opinion. I believe that Touga could not love anyone but himself. I don't think that he ever loved Utena, I think she was merely another challenge to him; just another girl to conquer. I think he really thought it should be his role to start the revolution.

6 Q (me) - Episode 37: Did Shiori have any feelings for Juri? The way she watches her while she plays badminton... Or maybe she just likes the fact that she can manipulate Juri so easily...
6 A (TB) - Once again, whether Shiori has feelings for Juri is a matter of opinion. I think she did.

7 Q (me) - Episode 38: So Dios was the "princely" part of Akio? So that would make them the same person? And when Anthy saved Dios from the hatred of the people, she became the witch?
7 A (TB) - Yes, Dios and Akio are the same person. It was not Anthy's place to sacrifice herself for her brother, so she became the witch. Akio knows he can never attain his princely self again because of his own weakness.

8 Q (me) - Episode 39: The Swords of Hatred; were they meant for the prince or the witch? They seemed to be meant for the prince, but why would the people hate the prince? And so Anthy sacrificed herself to save the prince by taking the swords? Is that the Rose Bride's destiny?
8 A (TB) - The swords were meant for the prince because he couldn't save all the princesses. Anthy did sacrifice herself for her brother, but she had no right to do this.
