Final Fantasy 7 Review
Alright, here's my review of the game. I'm gonna review the aspects of the game, then give it a grade, I'll average (ack, math word!) it out in the end, seeing it's overall grade.
The grades are:
A - Amazing in this area! It doesn't get much better than this.
B - It's pretty damn good, it could be a tiny bit better, but not by much.
C - Eh...it's average. It didn't fail, it passed in this catagory.
D/F - It sucks here, one of the games worst aspects.
Graphics/FMV's
Being that Final Fantasy 7 had the first 3D character's, and that it was a prodigy for it's time, I think they're pretty good. The goofy blocky characters take away from some of the serious scenes, but not that much. In my opinion I prefer life size characters, not the midget FF7 characters.
Grade: B
Characters
I'll say it right now, I absolutely adore FF7's characters, they are brilliant. It has the most character's in the later FF's, and in my opinion some of the best. Cloud, even though a little quirky, is a great character, he's not like a suave super-hero, he has his definite faults, and Square is not afraid to show that. Also, I love the girls! Tifa, even though a little risque, is a well-rounded character, she's not always happy, but she's also a little disturbed as well.
Grade: A
Villains
Final Fantasy Seven's villains are amazing, I believe they are the best in the series (Save Kefka, my all time fav!). Sephiroth, is a great villain, not a normal one, he's a little more than off his rocker. Hojo...*shudders* he's...a good villian I'll say that. He definately fills his role. And ShinRa is the best!
Grade: A+
Storyline
Ok, I have mixed feelings about FF7's storyline. It is a great storyline, I just feel they didn't go deeply enough into Sephiroth's and Vincent's past. The only thing you really find out about the past is in Lucretia's cave, and I feel that was not enough. Yet, other than that, it really is a good storyline, sticking true to the FFs main plot, saving the world.
Grade: A-/B+
Weapons/Money
I like the buying weapons system, much better than scouring the globe for minute items, that you need like 1 million of just to make like the character's basic weapon. Money, was a little scarce sometimes, I found myself selling things to get into the Gold Saucer numerous times.
Grade: B-
Magic/Summons
Eh...I'm not a fan of MP, but I like the fact once you have a spell you can't lose it. The summons I love, but it costs so much MP to use them, so in lower level battles you can only use them like once.
Grade: C+
Random Encounters/Difficulty
Too many damn random encounters, and the characters don't level up when you do, so they're usually weak ones too. The difficulty is so-so, it's a basic concept, you sometimes don't know where to go w/o asking around, but its usually easy enough to find out.
Grade: C-
Ending
It was sooo dissapointing, Where was Vincent and Yuffie?! C'mon, I took the time to get them, and they're not even in the ending. And what was up with that 500 years later thing, that was sketchy.
Grade: C/C-
Overall
Overall the final score is a B-/C+, but I know the game deserves at least a A-/B+. The sheer facts laid out, IMHO it's a pretty decent game. I feel it's really lacking in some parts, but it always seems to make it up in others. I have beaten the game, and even though the ending dissapointed me, I was satisfied. That's the point too, right? To entertain, to satisfy. So overall, Final Fantasy VII is a great game.
