Birdwood
Jan Schellingerhout and Ascona Rhonda at a Nubian Show
Hi, I’m Jan Schellingerhout. I have been breeding dairy goats for 7-8 years, mostly Nubians. We are situated N West of Auckland, ph 09-832.0845, or email at pschell@ihug.co.nz These are the qualities which I particularly like to see in my own nubian dairy goats;
- Large, strong frame.
- Dairiness- not short & stocky.
- Healthy constitution-nubians need a very good start in life. If I raise a kid myself, I wean does at 9mths and bucks at 1yr. They also need good quality hay from a young age, grain and haylage twice a day, extra vitamins and minerals.
- Move with style.
- Capability to milk well. Nubians in NZ in the past have had a poor reputation as dairy goats, but this is where I would like to see the greatest improvement.
First they need a large, strong frame, including a long, flattish rump. Then, a capacious appetite. Next, a well attached udder with well-defined teats.
- Productivity – if well cared for, nubian goats have the ability to produce very acceptable quantities of milk, with noticeably higher milk solids. They also tend to have more kids than swiss goats – usually 2 or 3, but sometimes 4 or 5 kids.
- Beauty – Nubians have always attracted me because they are tall and gracious. They have shapely pendulous ears and come in an extensive range of colours and patterns. You can never guess exactly what you will get at kidding.
- Friendly, cooperative and intelligent nature
Contact me if you would like advice or information about keeping nubians, or if you would like to own a Birdwood nubian, or acquire semen straws for artificial insemination because your doe lives a long way from my bucks.
My nubians have won many prizes at shows e.g.
-Thorntree Fable was the best in show at 2001 NZ Nubian Show
-Birdwood Matua was NZDGBA Buck of the Year 2001
-Birdwood Moccasin was best in show at NZ Nubian Show 2002
I am herd testing my milking does so I can specifically breed for good milking ability, and I classify regularly to give me an accurate idea of which goats have the attributes I require.
