When she is in male kimonos she uses a ponytail and always carries a sword that is a katana that her father gift to her, also has some tricks under her sleeves. She has a kind of strange gaze that makes you think that she is analyzing everyone.

Skills:

she is very good with the sword. Perhaps her body doesn't look strong her lightweight let her make fast movements, and also knows about kempou and ninja tactics. She made a combination of the things she knows as samurai with the ninja's. She specialize in the spying thing; give reports of the situations; localize names, documents; fake; analyze info., etc.

Background:

Mariko is the daughter of Jinsai Ukechi a samurai and an early Shinsengumi who apparently died in a mission and Minowara Genjiko, also from a family who died when she was still a baby...

She born and lived in Osaka (a city at 50km from Kyoto) with his father, and he taught her his sword technique and all that she knows about life. Sometimes her father passed days without going home, but she understands that this was part of his job. Mariko and Ukechi had a very close relationship and they now perfectly each other, they were like twin souls. The lord of his father was a man called Kurosawa Yoshida, a daimyoo from Osaka very important and powerful, related to the Shogun and the Tokugawa family. Ukechi was the must faithful man of Kurosawa, and always recurred to him like his right hand. Kurosawa, died victim of the enemies poison (in that time, the war was starting to rise), so Ukechi were called from the Tokugawa government (as many of the ronin) to become a member of the Shinsengumi, a new bakufu police, to faith against the traitors of the Tokugawa (the restaurateurs), so he started to travel to Kyoto constantly...

Her father was friend of the Oniwabanshuus, specifically of the leader and Okina, so Mariko passed a lot of time with them, when she wasn't training with his father she was with the Oni's, the protectors of the Edo castle. She learned a lot of them, not only in techniques, how to spy, analyze information and kempou, it was more: the calm behavior, the patience, and the coldness... Her father was happy about this, her child was going to be soon or later alone in that world of war so she had to know about how to defend herself. She also met Shinomori Aoshi (future okashira of the group), they had an excellent relationship, really good friends maybe more. They enjoyed a lot, making the cha no yu ritual, talking, reading, practicing... There she also met another good friend and future partner in the Kagetai: Takashi. The three of them were always together.

One day Ukechi returned home and told Mariko that he was going to take her out that night to dinner, he gave her two gifts, the first a beautiful set of pins for the hair, and the second a new and great sword, she was in time to have it. Mariko was very happy. They had such a wonderful night. The next day, Mariko found that Ukechi wasn't there. One week later she received a notification, her father died apparently in combat (maybe he could also died in a confrontation with a personal enemy because he had lots). She was destroyed, and depressed. Okina invited her to live with them in Kyoto, at first she didn't accept but later she took his things, closed the house and leave Osaka, looking for the Shinsengumi, because she wanted to follow her father steps. The Oniwabanshuus invited her to become part of them, but she declined because all she wanted to be, was part of the Shinsengumi. She finally found the way to enter in the tests to become a member, but her father told his group to never let her daughter become part of it, so she didn't entered, perhaps she made a good qualification. Saitou took notice of her abilities, so he invited her to become a member of the Kagetai, and of course she accepted. She said bye, but continued her relationship with the her Oni's friends.

Personality:

She is an anarchic and very stubborn person, intelligent, intuitive, brave, loyal, impulsive and a little violent, perhaps she is really kind, polite and responsible. Is strong tempered. Doesn't talk too much, doesn't express her feelings. Also have a tendency to be inflexible when it comes to her views. Really in her true nature she is sweet and afraid of be hurt.
