"Daniel used to be in a bar band in the early 90's with his two brothers and some friends called Red Edge. Red Edge needed a singer so they placed an ad in a magazine called Time Off. This was January 1993. Darren was one of about 20 people who auditioned. He didn't sing very well but he and Daniel clicked right away, and he was picked as the singer.

Soon after that, the guys got sick of getting nowhere with Red Edge so they quit and started thei own band. They took their name "Savage Garden" from an Anne Rice. The oxymoron seems to fit their personalities and their music perfectly. Sometimes it can be very loud, hard, and savage, but sometimes it can be peaceful, sweet, and serene, like a garden.

They spent about a year writing and sent out demos to record companies, which included "Truly Madly Deeply", "Mine", "A Thousand Words", and two others. These demos worked, and they got the contract they were looking for.

They went into the studio to record their first album. Soon after, they released "I Want You" which was a massive hit in Australia, and it got an ARIA nomination after only two weeks of being on the charts. That was just the beginning though. They released "To the Moon and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply" as well, which both went to #1 is Oz.

So how did they become famous internationally? While on an Australian business trip, and American DJ picked up "I Want You" and fell in love with it. He brought it back to America and started playing it. Well, everyone loved it and there was demand all over the country for the song, and a ton of record companies wanted SG on their label. Columbia won and they released IWY worldwide.

The second US single was "To the Moon and Back" and it did poorly in North America.. but over in Australia Savage Garden were setting a world record at the 1997 ARIA's. They were nominated for 13 awards and won 10 of them. They decided to release "Truly Madly Deeply" in North America and it was a smash! It went straight to #1 and stayed there for three weeks. The guys released "Break Me Shake Me", "Universe", and "All Around Me" in Australia and started their 1998 "Future of Eartly Delites" tour in Australia. They continued on through Asia, Europe, and North America. The guys released "Break Me Shake Me" worldwide and it did well, but not as well as IWY and TMD. TTMAB was also re-released and it did better this time. After their 85-date world tour ended, the guys took a nice break before going into the studio and starting all over again..

In 1998 the guys were given the chance to write for the soundtrack to "The Other Sister". Darren was living in New York at the time and through e-mail and computer disks he wrote "The Animal Song" with Daniel. When this song was released, SG fans were so hungry for something new that it was the most added song on the radio that week. It went to #3 in Australia and #19 in North America.

After a much-needed break, the guys were back in the studio recording their second album Affirmation. They spent a long time in the studio until finally they released their next single, "I Knew I Loved You", shortly before the album was released. The song was a huge smash. It was the most added track to radio that week in America and the most added track in history in Australia. It zoomed right up the charts.

When Affirmation was finally released, it debuted at #1 in Australia and #6 in America. It went double platinum within three weeks of being released. After two months it had sold 4 million copies. In January 2000, "I Knew I Loved You" went to #1 in America, almost the same day as TMD had hit #1 two years earlier. "
