He began an old Sondheim song he knew, carefully, so as not to awake his sleeping wife who lie in their canopied bed nearby. ~&~*~&~*~ Not to worry Not to worry ~&~*~&~*~ The little girl snuggled closer into his bare, muscular chest. "Papa . . ." she murmured. "Shh . . ." he whispered back. "Go to sleep." The woman in the bed stirred and, lifting her head, said groggily, "Mamo-chan? What are you doing? What time is it?" He looked at her, his heart full to bursting with love. "Go back to sleep, Usako. It's okay. I'll take care of Chibi-Usa." "Iie . . ." she answered. "You've been up with her for so long now. Let me take her," Usagi protested. "We'll both take care of her, ne?" he compromised. She smiled sleepily. "Hai." She got up and pushed the cream-colored covers back. The moonlight pouring in through the open window made her long, rippling hair seem an iridescent silver as she approached her loving husband and small child. "What were you singing just now?" she asked, taking the toddler from his arms. "‘Not While I'm Around' . . ." he said. She smiled again. He was such a good father. "Then let's finish it, shall we, and go back to sleep?" she said in a tender voice. Mamoru looked at her, surprised. It was a rare occasion that made Usagi want to sing even though she had a lovely voice. "Alright." She started the next part of the verse, directing her soprano voice towards the child who was now comfortably held in the warm circle of her arms. ~&~*~&~*~ I may not be smart But I ain't dumb ~&~*~&~*~ Usagi looked at Mamoru. It was his turn to sing the next few lines. But he was lost in thought about what the words she had just sung meant. ‘But she is so very smart,' he thought. ‘Not book smart, but that doesn't matter to me . . . and she's learned so much in our years together. . . .' he sighed. "A penny for your thoughts?" she asked. He didn't answer, only continued the song in his mellow baritone. ~&~*~&~*~ Let me do it Put me to it Show me somethin' I can overcome ~&~*~&~*~ "I was thinking about when you and I . . . weren't like this. When we didn't like each other very much . . . and we fought all the time. I remember I used to make fun of your poor academic work. . . ." "I forgive you," she said softly. "I'd forgive you anything." She stared into his eyes, made almost black by the night, with their maelstrom of blue swirling, and saw how much the words she had just uttered meant to him. She continued the song in her sweet voice, directing the line towards him because it was so relevant to what he had said. ~&~*~&~*~ Not to worry chum ~&~*~&~*~ "Arigato, my love . . ." he whispered. Then he directed his verse to both child and mother. ~&~*~&~*~ Nothin's gonna harm you Not while I'm around Nothin's gonna harm you No sir Not while I'm around ~&~*~&~*~ Usagi laughed lightly, the bell-like sound permeating the room with its brightness. She smiled down at Chibi-Usa. "Your papa is a very good mamoru, ne, little one?" The toddler answered with her light breathing as she slept. Usagi handed her to Mamoru as she went down the long columned hallway and through a marble-arched door to the baby's room. She walked over to Chibi-Usa's crib and drew back the embroidered covers, arranging the stuffed animals back into their places so her daughter could sleep. Careful not to wake the baby, Mamoru followed his beloved into their child's room. He looked around for the rocking chair, then motioned for Usagi to sit in it. She did, and he handed Chibi-Usa back to her, kissing his Usako's cheek as he did so, and looking fondly down at the child. Usagi took a breath, then sang. ~&~*~&~*~ Demons are prowlin' everywhere Now adays I'll send them howlin' I don't care I got ways ~&~*~&~*~ She was drawn back in time to the days when she was Sailor Moon, defender of love and justice, when she guarded an older version of this small child with her life. "It's true, Chibi-Usa. I'll never let them harm you. Not ever," she whispered fiercely. Mamoru suddenly understood that, even though in the past the women who were the most special to him fought like cats and dogs, in this time and place they loved each other very much. He took up his verse with a soaring sound that filled the empty void in the room with love. ~&~*~&~*~ No one's gonna hurt you No one's gonna dare Others will desert you Not to worry Whistle I'll be there ~&~*~&~*~ "And you always were, Mamo-chan," Usagi whispered. "Whether we were Usagi and Mamoru, or Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask; even as far as right now, when we're King and Queen of Crystal Tokyo. . . . You're still here," she finished. Her eyes were glassy with tears of happiness as she looked up into her husband's handsome face. He could only answer with an emotion-choked, "Hai," before he bent down and kissed her firmly on the lips. She leaned into him, careful of the sleeping child in her arms. He released her, his eyes starry, and she sang to the child. ~&~*~&~*~ Demons'll charm you With a smile For a while But in time ~&~*~&~*~ "We got you back, that time, from the demons, Chibi-Usa, my love, didn't we?" Mamoru said as he helped Usagi to her feet from the chair, and walked with her to the crib. He watched as his wife put their child safely in between the colorful blankets, then finished the singing the song, directing it to both mother and child. ~&~*~&~*~ Nothin's gonna harm you Not while I'm around ~&~*~&~*~ ‘I believe you, Aishiteru, Mamo-chan,' Usagi thought as she stared at Mamoru through the darkness. ‘Aishiteru, Usako, I'll always be here,' he promised. They came together, holding each other tightly, watching the face of their child through the dim moonlight, enfolding her with all the warmth and love they possessed. ‘Aishiteru, Chibi-Usa,' they thought simultaneously. ‘And we always will.'
