A Visitor from the Past, Part 4 by Ice-Wizard@gmx.at PG A few explanations: " " Something is said ' ' Something is thought CAPITAL LETTERS Sailor Pluto talks or someone yells (You'll know the difference) Hi, people! This is part 4 of my story and I'd like to thank two special autors who me a lot with their advice: Lady Guinevere and Eagle. I couldn't bring in all their suggestions but there will be a part 5; if I don't run out of ideas or time, that is. (The second one is more likely to happen.) With Ami's battered body in my arms, I ran into the hospital, opening the door just by thinking about it. I called for a doctor and told them what happened. Off course, I didn't mention that Ami was a Sailor Senshi; just that she was attacked by some strange monster. This didn't surprise the hospital staff at all, with the arrival of the Senshi there been many cases like this. I didn't really listen as they talked among themselves. I tried to stay with her, but not being a relative, I wasn't allowed to. I was about to leave when someone grabbed my shoulder. I almost cast a fire bolt. It was Doctor Mizuno. "George, what happened to my daughter!" I didn't know how to explain what had happened. "Tell me what's going on. I don't understand it. Ami started acting so different when..." She didn't finish. "You mean when I showed up?" She shook her head. "Earlier. It was some time after this Sailor Moon appeared." She sat down. "What have I done wrong? Ami leaves the house after strange calls and comes back totally exhausted. Do you know where she is going? Or what she is doing?" "You love her, don't you." "I'm her mother!" She glared at me angrily. "No offence meant. But do you also trust her?" "Yes. I know she has never lied to me. She wouldn't do that" "Then don't make her. Everyone has secrets and it's not up to me to reveal Ami's." I sat down next to Dr. Mizuno. "Doesn't she trust me? Is that the reason why she won't tell me?" "She protects you. That's the only reason." The doctor who was taking care of Ami interrupted us. "Dr. Mizuno?" He noticed me. "Who are you?" Before I could answer, Ami's mother answered. "He's a friend of the family. Tell me, how's Ami." "I don't know. She still hasn't woken up. Her leg was pierced by some crystalline substance. Unfortunately it appears that some fragments of this object entered her blood stream." Zoisite. I had totally forgotten about Zoisite. I remember that I had hit the General pretty hard. With Ami out, he probably was the only one who knew how to create an antidote. I hoped he was still where we, Tuxedo Mask and I, left him. "I have forgotten something." I called out and ran back to the cinema. * * * When I arrived there, Zoisite was gone. "DAMN!" I began searching the area and finally found a spot of dried blood. It's green? As far as I remembered the Guardians of Earth had been human. Was only Zoisite's blood different or were the other three the same? No time to worry about that now. I followed the trail of blood. Some blocks away it ended. He must have teleported away from there. I doubted that he returned to Beryl. She would have killed him. I returned to where I had thrown the sword. Maybe it would help the scientists to find a cure for Ami. I picked up the blade. It didn't look like anything I had ever seen. I scanned it but found no magical energy in it. First the Senshi, then the two Generals, now this weapon: The three had one thing in common; they had strange powers but they were not of arcane origin. On the other hand, if their auras had been easy to read, the Senshi wouldn't have been able to remain hidden. It must be some sort of disguise magic that hid them. * * * My chain of thoughts was interrupted when I noticed where I was. I had arrived back at the hospital. I went to the place where I had left Ami's mother and the other doctor. I had only been gone for a half-hour, and they were still discussing what to do. I greeted them and gave them the crystal. "This is the thing that caused the wound. Do you think it will be of any help?" The doctor just nodded and left to examine the blade. Dr. Mizuno still sat there. She hid her face in her hands and I didn't want to disturb her. After two hours, a nurse told us that we could see Ami. We followed her to a small room. I had expected more machinery in here, but all I could see was a monitor that watched her vital functions. I asked about it. "There is no need for other instruments. After a check we found out that besides the blood loss, the wound and some burns at her neck she is healthy." I looked at her. Her neck and right leg were bandaged. If she hadn't been so pale, I would have thought she was just asleep. Actually, she was just sleeping; it was no coma or anything like that. After some time we were asked to leave; there was supposed to be another check up. Before I went, I touched Ami's forehead to cast a spell that would ease her pain. It wouldn't last for a long time but it was all I could do. My hands glowed for a brief moment and Ami's mother saw it. A last glance at Ami showed me that she looked more relaxed now. "You know more then you tell me." I just nodded. "Please don't ask what I did. I couldn't explain it." "You don't have to if you don't want. I saw that it helped Ami and that's all I need to know." She was about to go home. "You should get some sleep. You don't look so good." 'You are more right then you know. I am tired. Very tired.' I thought. 'GOOD WORK, MENTUS. YOU SAVED THE PRINCE.' 'Yes, Pluto. But Ami had to pay for it.' 'DON'T FORGET THAT THIS IS A WAR. EVEN IF NOT MANY SOLDIERS ARE INVOLVED DOESN'T CHANGE THAT. THE SAFETY OF THE ROYAL COUPLE IS OUR PRIMARY GOAL.' 'You are absolutely right. All we have to care for is your precious Crystal Tokyo. If a few people have to die for it, it's ok.' 'NOW YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN.' 'Does the word sarcasm tell you something?' The contact ended. Where should I go to? I couldn't return to the shrine as I had been gone for a month. What would I tell Rei's grandpa? I didn't have a big choice here. "Dr. Mizuno?" She stopped and turned around. "Yes?" "I don't know how to explain. I didn't plan on staying in Tokyo for a long time so I have no place where I could spend the night. I understand if you say no since you don't know a lot about me but..." "You can come with me." I was about to thank her but she continued. "If you tell me what you did earlier. I want to know whom I invite in my house." "I cannot do that." "Ok. I heard the park benches aren't so bad to sleep at if you use some newspapers." I sighed. "You win, but just under one condition. You promise that, what ever I tell you, you won't inform anybody else about it." She nodded. "That's fair enough." I followed her to her car. She started the engine. After some time we arrived and Dr. Mizuno showed me the guestroom. I just laid down and fell asleep. * * * I didn't sleep well that night. I was haunted by nightmares. I was back at the cinema. A black robed figure strangled Ami while she pleaded with me to help her. But I couldn't move. I had to watch the life being drawn out of her body. Then, after what felt like an eternity to me, the dark figure dropped her dead body. It turned around and took off its robe; it was me. I saw myself standing in front of me. That's when I woke up. It was still dark outside but I was too shocked to sleep again. I decided to walk downstairs. I went into the kitchen to get something to drink. Ami's mother sat there with a cup of coffee. She motioned me to get a cup and sit down. "Dr. Mizuno, why are you up at this hour?" "I could ask you the same thing, but we both know the reason." I took some coffee and added milk and sugar. "Now, that we are both awake why don't we have that little chat?" I knew what she wanted but I played stupid. "Some special topic?" "I want to tell you a tale. Once upon a time, there was a young man who visited my daughter. He went away and wasn't seen or heard of. Then, one month later, I went shopping and met the young man. The very same day my daughter got a call and had to go. I had night shift and went to the hospital. Suddenly, after taking care of some patients, the young man I mentioned earlier arrived, carrying the unconscious and obviously beaten up body of my daughter in. Nobody knew what happened to her, but not only did he also bring a weapon made of unknown material; he just touched her with glowing hands and made her feel better. Do I have to remind you of your promise?" I closed my eyes and concentrated. The blue crescent Moon on my forehead glowed and the coffee cup in front of me began to float. I sent it to Dr. Mizuno. "Could I have a cup, please?" That got me quite a stare. If the situation hadn't been so serious, I would have grinned at her face. Now I just sat down the cup and started talking. "My real name is Mentus and, as you might have guessed, I am a Wizard. I cannot do a lot of Magic but it proves to be quite useful. Do you have any questions?" She stared at me and I gave her some time to recover. "That's... interesting. And what does this have to do with Ami?" Now I had to lie. "Nothing at all. It was just a coincidence that Ami was there. She was invited by her friends to watch a movie. The cinema was attacked and she got into the line of fire. I was nearby when the Sailor Senshi showed up and beat the monster. They didn't want to draw too much attention so it was me who brought Ami to the hospital." We sat there for half an hour. This information had to sink in first. When the sun came up, I helped to clean off the table. Dr. Mizuno prepared herself for work. "Mentus? I'm going to take my daughter home." "Are you sure? Ami needs medical support and you don't have the necessary equipment here." "Whatever she's suffering from, nobody in the hospital can help her. They don't even know what they are looking for. If you really are a wizard, then you can help her." "I really want to help but my training isn't completed yet." "It's more than I can say about myself... or anybody else I know. That spell you used helped her." "It just eased her pain." "That's a start." She gave me a look that said: 'Do it or look for another place to stay.' Not that I didn't understand her. Were I in her place, I would probably use every means I could. "I agree. Bring her and I will do what I can. But, if her condition gets worse instead of better you'll have to take her back to hospital." She nodded. "I have to get some of my things from Hikawa Shrine." I teleported there. * * * I reappeared in my former room. Everything was as I had left it, just a little bit dusty. I changed into a clean pair of trousers and a fresh shirt. I began to pack my things when the door opened. "Who's there?" I recognized Rei's voice. "It's me, Mentus." Rei, no, Sailor Mars entered. She must have felt the teleport. I should have known that nobody could sneak in here. The place was protected by a powerful spirit. "Mentus. Did you come to finish what Kunzite started?" Suddenly she jumped at me, one of her wards in her hand. "Evil spirit, be gone!" She shouted and pushed the scroll on my forehead. I fell down and screamed in pain. "I knew it. You are an enemy." She prepared another attack. "I'm no enemy." "My wand only hurts evil spirits. Your reaction proves that you are one." I took off the paper and tried to get up. "You would scream too, if I pushed my index finger right in your eye. I'm lucky that I'm still able to see." Mars blushed at that and detransformed. "I'm sorry. Mamoru told us what you did to help us but I still wasn't sure. It could have been a trap after all. How is Ami?" "I don't know." She grabbed my arm. "What do you mean? It was you who took her away after the battle. Where is she?" I tried to free myself, but Rei was too strong. "She is in the hospital right now. I don't want to tell the same story twice. Why don't you call the others for a meeting this evening, so I can explain everything." "Just tell me if Ami is ok." "No, she isn't. She didn't wake up." Rei paled at that and let of my arm to sit down. "Will she... I mean she isn't going..." "She won't die." I hope. To change the subject I tried to find out what had happened during my time in the Dark Kingdom. My former allies had kept a low profile. The loss of the Silver Crystal and the awakening of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion must have mixed up their plans and they had to reorganize first. "There have been three youma attacks and one assault of a shadow warrior. The youma were all destroyed, but the shadow warrior escaped." Rei thought a while. "One thing was strange. Two of the youma didn't turn to dust when we hit them. They changed to some sort of tarot cards, but the pictures on them became black before I could examine them." Cardians. Oh, Pluto. So much for 'small changes that didn't affect the timeline.' Now the Senshi had to battle not only Queen Beryl but also Ail and Ann. Situations like this made me regret my inability to tell them about the future. With my knowledge, the two aliens could become powerful allies. I would just have to show them how to use the power of their love for each other to feed their manna tree. It was very easy to do that if you knew how. I would have to discuss that matter with Pluto the next time we would talk. I gathered my things and excused myself to return to the Mizuno's house. * * * I looked around Ami's room to prepare. The bed was made of wood. That wasn't the best material to work a spell on, but since she didn't sleep on a rock, I had to use what I could get. I knelt down in front of the bed and closed my eyes to concentrate. I let my mind flow, and after some time, my gaze shifted to the spiritual sphere and I could see the Manna that rose from the ground and floated through the air around me. Carefully I formed a positive force field around the bed, to make the Manna circulate in a special pattern. I used all the protective spells I knew, even those I only rarely used. I added them all, as I didn't know exactly what Ami was suffering from. One to heal physical damage, one to regenerate a person's Manna, another to dispel curses and one to keep away nightmares. I even used some good luck charms. They had no real effect, but they assured me that I had used all my resources. The flow of time was different in the spiritual world, as when my trance ended it was late in the afternoon. To my aura vision the room seemed to glow with all colors of the rainbow and more. Even a normal human would notice a strange fog and an occasional blinking light. Now came the last - and most delicate - part of the ritual. I took a knife, which I had taken from the kitchen. With it, I cut a special rune in the back of my left hand. The fact that it didn't hurt a lot and that the wound closed after only a few seconds proved that I had made no mistake. The spells in this room were now directly connected with my soul. I could already feel the draining effect. About two thirds of my energy was used up that way but if it helped Ami it was worth it. Someone knocked at the door. I opened it and greeted Dr. Mizuno. "When did you return?" I tried to ask. My throat was too dry so she couldn't understand me. I repeated my question. "I brought Ami home about two hours ago. I didn't want to disturb you with whatever you were doing. I laid her down in the guest room." "Did you have any problems getting her back?" "Not at all. I guess that they were glad to have a free bed for some 'real patients'. Not for someone who just sleeps." I couldn't believe it. "That's what they said?" Dr. Mizuno sighed. "Off course not. But it was obvious to me. Could you help me carry her to her room?" "Stay here. I'll take care of that." I went to my room and teleported us to her room. When we arrived there, I almost fainted. Keeping the healing spells cost more power than I had thought. 'I guess that means low power spells from now on.' Dr. Mizuno shrugged. "Are you always coming and going like that?" "Usually I do. But now I am using a lot of energy for Ami. I guess I'll be only able to do this three or four times a day from now on. Only one time, if I have to transfer two persons. It's also going to take more time. Remember, I told you that I'm just an apprentice of the arts. I can use some tricks I have learned but otherwise I'm just as human as you are." I looked at the clock. It was 6 pm. "Oh my! I forgot time. I have promised to tell Ami's friends what happened to her. They must be worried why I don't come. "I could give you a ride." "No. You should stay here with Ami. I think I'll take the bus." I grabbed my jacket and left. * * * I had to wait for the bus so it was 7 pm when I arrived. The girls were already waiting for me. Usagi leaned on Mamoru's shoulder and Luna was sleeping in her lap. Artemis was in a similar position but with Minako. Usagi looked as if she had cried. As soon as I entered she got up. "How's Ami? Where is she?" I decided to make it short and painless. "Ami was drained by Zoisite and stabbed through her leg. She fainted after that." Makoto interrupted me. "Don't tell us what we know." "I was going to do that. Just wait. Her wound is deep but not dangerous. It was a clean cut and no bones were damaged. But, She hasn't woken up yet. Dr. Mizuno took her home and I cast a lot of spells in her room to help her. I don't know if this will have any effect, but it's all I can do. The doctors found some crystalline particles in her blood stream, but they have never seen something like it. I gave them the blade so they can examine it to find a cure." That silenced the group for a while. Minako was the first to recover. "Can we see her?" I saw no problem there. Maybe they would find a solution I hadn't seen. "Just be careful what you say when Ami's mother is around. I told her that I'm a Wizard but not about you girls being the Senshi." Makoto laid her arm around my shoulder. "Do you think we are stupid?" "No, but I remember the first time we met. Know what I mean?" "Hey, that was our fifth battle that day. We chased that shadow thing through the whole city when you dropped in. We were barely able to stand." Makoto pointed at Usagi. "She didn't realize her responsibility back then. Now she's very mature." Hearing that somebody talked about her made Usagi look back. Promptly she stumbled over a chair that stood there. I was really glad that Mamoru was nearby to stop the waterfalls. Makoto sweat dropped. "Sometimes, at least." * * * We returned to Ami with Mamoru's car. During the trip, I gave them a short version of what had happened with me after the battle at Tokyo Tower. I didn't mention Pluto's part in the whole affair. When we arrived, the girls ignored Dr. Mizuno and headed right for Ami's room. I expected Usagi to cry again but she just stood there and held the hand of her friend. Minako shivered. "I feel so relaxed and calm in here. Why's that?" "That's one of my spells." I had to sit down. Minako saw it and felt my temperature. "You're glowing. Lay down a while. I guess you're totally exhausted. I tried to get up but I failed. "No. I have to look after Ami. I have to know if there are any bad side effects." Makoto helped Minako. "She's right. Go. We take care of everything." I shook my head. "No. I have to stay here. It's my fault that she was hurt. Only my fault." "That's wrong," Minako said. "That blast at Tokyo Tower was aimed at Mamoru. I'm not sure if he would have survived it in his bad condition. You were possessed by an evil spirit, so how could it have been your fault?" I just nodded. It wouldn't be any use to argue with them now. A slight moan from Ami got my attention. Her lips shivered, as if she tried to say something. We bent down to understand her better. "U...sa...Usa...gi..." Then she went quite again. Usagi. One part of me felt quite jealous because she didn't say my name. I knew how stupid this thought was. There was one thing I should always keep in mind with respect to the inner senshi. The princess came first. Then came nothing for a long time and finally came their private live. I looked at them. Even now with Ami as the center of their attention, they still placed themselves around the room in the optimal positions to guarantee Usagi's safety. The room had but one window and Minako stood right in front of it. Makoto guarded the door. Mamoru was right next to his love and Rei watched their back. Rei. When I looked at her face, I saw sadness in her eyes, not because of Ami. The reason was Mamoru Chiba. When he put his arm around his future wife's waist a single tear crossed the cheek of the young priestess. Rei noticed my gaze and smiled but I could see that it was a forced smile. 'There is not a lot I can hide from you, now can I?' First I thought Pluto spoke to me but it was Rei. 'You've practiced, I assume?' She didn't react. Maybe she was just able to send telepathic messages but not to receive them. I tried again, this time more intensive. 'Yes, I used the meditation methods you showed me. They are very effective.' 'That's good. But could you tell me why you behave so strange about Mamoru?' I thought she hadn't heard me because she didn't answer immediately. 'I once loved him.' That was new for me. 'You have been together?' 'Yes. We have been a couple for two years now.' Rei didn't expect me to answer. She continued to tell me about her past with Mamoru. How they got to know each other and became friends. Then, after some time, they had kissed for the first time. I closed the mind link. I didn't think that Rei really wanted to send me these images. She was inexperienced in the arts and probably just forgot to end our 'conversation'. This could cause some problems. The demon in every magic-users soul grew stronger with negative emotions such as jealousy. For a short time this wouldn't be any harm but if the feeling stayed for months, maybe even years, the demon would be able to take control. Being a Senshi slowed the process but it didn't stop it. Considering the fact that the Princess of Mars would be immortal some day... A shiver running through Ami's body ended my worries about Rei. I didn't know if it were my spells that helped Ami or if it was just the closeness of her best friends. She was healing and only that was important to me right now. I was barely able to keep my eyes open. Rei was still in thoughts about Mamoru but Minako noticed it. She took my hand as if I was just a child and guided me back to my room. She grabbed my shoulders and made me look at her. "Don't forget: It was not your fault. I know what you feel right now. We have to talk tomorrow. Now you sleep. Do you understand me?" I was just able to nod. I entered my room and lay down on the bed. I didn't even bother to change my clothes. I didn't think I would have been able to do it. I fell into a deep dreamless slumber, maybe the first I've had for weeks. * * * The next morning I was awoken by the doorbell. After some time I got up to check who was there. I slipped in my Robe and went down. Dr. Mizuno had already opened the door and allowing Usagi to enter. When she saw me, she greeted me with a big smile. "Good morning! Hey, why aren't you ready for work?" Work? What was she talking about? "Didn't I tell you?" "Tell me what?" "Ooops. You are still working at the school library. Ami didn't believe that you were dead so she just told everybody that you were ill." That's what I call an early morning surprise. I was about to leave when I noticed Usagi's strange look. I had forgotten that I still wore my robe. Heading up to change, I decided to put on some jeans. Since coming to live in this time, I had developed a fable for jeans. They were different from anything I had known on the moon. I took a matching sweater and joined Usagi. We headed for the bus, and because of a little run, we didn't miss it. During the trip, I asked who the new principal was and got my second surprise for this day. It was Ms. Haruna. "She must be very proud to get that post." Usagi giggled at that. "Quite the opposite. Nobody wanted to apply for that post. It means a lot of responsibility and almost no time for a private life." At the next stop, Naru entered the bus so Usagi was busy chatting with her for the rest of the ride. When we arrived, I headed for the library and Usagi and Naru waited for their classes to start. * * * This must have been my day of surprises. When I entered I saw not only four brand new shelves in "my" library, but there was also a PC. Where is Ami when you need her? Give me a strange book of mystic runes any day, but this computer thing made me nervous. How could this thing calculate the most complicated things without a Manna Crystal in it? That reminded me of rule #4 of magic. "Nothing lasts for ever and everything changes. The Wizard who stops being in touch with the flow of time stops living. Use the experience of the past to understand the treasures of the future." Back in the Silver Millennium, I hadn't understood what this meant. Now, having to live in this strange world, I saw the truth in those words. At first, I was just a visitor here, but now I had to become a part of this time. There was no way back. I started to catalogue the books. I had to use the old pen and paper method until someone told me how to use this strange new machine. After some hours of work, I grew curious. 'I've seen how Ami used her Mercury Computer. This can't be so different.' I carefully examined the PC. There were a lot of wires coming out of it. Hmmm. The button 'Power' looked good enough to me so I pushed it. With a peeping noise, the machine began working. But why was the screen black? Oh, there was another button. After a little flash of light and I was greeted by some figures. There, on the bottom of the screen was a blinking light. It said C:\>. I remembered that Ami had always used what she called a keyboard. I pushed some buttons. C:\>afelasifjlasfeofeoae Command or filename not found. 'Interesting. He wants me to give him commands.' C:\>Hello. Command or filename not found. 'What an impolite machine.' C:\>I command you to create a booklist. Command or filename not found. 'Damn stupid Computer.' C:\>Could you help me with creating a booklist, please? Command or filename not found. That was it. I wouldn't let a heap of metal insult me. That was when Makoto, Minako and Usagi came in. They had come to get some books they needed for a history lesson. I went to get them, and during that time the girls read my short attempt to communicate with my new PC. They could barely hide their amusement. Makoto deactivated the Computer. "I have made a lot of stupid mistakes during my computer lessons; but this beats all." "Oh, why don't you just take your books and get out?" That increased their amusement even more. Minako pushed the other two out. But it wouldn't have been Minako if she had left without a comment. "I'm sorry, oh almighty Wizard. Your knowledge of technology might not be the best but I have to say, you are the most polite user I have ever seen. Try pretty please the next time." Before I could give her a special reply, they were gone. They were right after all. Just living here had been enough for the past month. But there was a lot more I had to learn. Suddenly the door was pushed open. My three torturers running back in. "What's up? Want to tell me another Computer joke?" Usagi just took my hands and started bouncing up and down with joy. "Guess what!? Ami's mother called Rei, Rei called Mamoru and he just came to tell me." I tried to free myself but I couldn't. "What did he tell you?" "Ami, she woke up! She is still too weak to leave her bed but she's definitely awake now." "YES!!!" I surprised Usagi by grabbing her and giving her a kiss on the forehead. "I have to go see her." I didn't wait for their answer and teleported back to the Mizuno's house. That was Part 4. Part 5 will be out next week. Tell me what you think about it!
