Character Description: Byakuya belongs to the Kuchiki clan, which is one of the four noble families in the Soul Society. The head piece he wears, which is referred to as a kenseikan, shows his noble rank as the 28th head of the Kuchiki family. Along with the head piece, he wears a white scarf called ginpaku kazahana no uzuginu. This scarf is a family heirloom handed down through the generations to the head of the Kuchiki family. Even though Byakuya is an extremely apathetic man, he does care deeply for his sister Rukia. Rukia thought otherwise because he would not try to save her from execution by the Soul Society. However, the reason he did not attempt to save her life is because he promised his parents' graves he would no longer break the rules.

Character Description: Renji first appears in episode 16 with Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia's brother, to bring Rukia back from the human world. He defeats Ishida when he first arrives and is about to deal the final blow until Ichigo steps in. After another fight with Ichigo, Byakuya steps in to kill Ichigo. After believing that Ichigo will die in a short amount of time, he opens the gate to Soul Society. Renji's goal is to surpass Byakuya in strength and even fights him. However, Renji loses the battle. Unlike the other Lieutenants, Renji has harnessed the power of the bankai, or the second release of his zanpakuto.
