Personal Statement

Ever since I was a young child, I always dreamed of finishing high school, graduating from college, and pursuing a career in computers. It is amazing how dreams could come true, even though it took some time. When I reflect back to my high school years, I recall graduating with a Regents Diploma and being initiated in the National Honor Society. Next, I went to a junior college in Rochester, New York with the intentions of graduating with an Associates degree in Computer Information Systems. However, this is where life kicked in.

At a young age of twenty, I got married to love of my life and proud to say, still married to this great man. My passion for learning was this present, but family was my top priority. Unfortunately, my education had to be put on the back burner for a few years.  As a non-traditional student, I went back to Monroe Community College and graduated with an Associates of Science in Computer Information Systems in 1998. Now, I was on a roll and wanted to see what life could offer me.

With disbelief, I was hired as a Database Administrator for Delphi Automotive Systems. By far, this was one of the best jobs I have ever had not to mention the experience that I obtained from being in a corporate environment.  Now that I had my Associates, I proceeded on to Rochester Institute of Technology, with intentions of graduating with a Bachelor in Management Information Systems with a minor in Spanish. As a student, I maintained a 3.5 average and loved it. Let’s recap: I was a mother, wife, full- time student, and an employee and still managed to maintain a high average. However, all had changed in the Fall 1999 when I exited the school and planned my new life in Atlanta, Georgia.

My husband’s company gave us an opportunity for relocation to Atlanta, Georgia to start up a new division.  As of January 2000, we left Rochester, New York and landed in Fayetteville, Georgia. My passion for education was still strong and I had a mission to finish my Bachelors before I turn thirty years old. With ease, I enrolled in Georgia State University in fall 2001 and will graduate with my Bachelors degree in Business Analysis in Fall 2003.

By the grace of God, I have managed to obtain a job as a Program Coordinator for a small company in Marietta, Georgia. This is a start of a fascinating career in Information Technology and I welcome it with open arms. So the question of the hour is once you have completed your dreams, what do you do now? Of course, plan new goals to be accomplished. Without further ado, I plan to attend graduate school in 2004 however, in order to have a good work/life balance; I decided an online degree from an accredited college would suffice. My intended major is undecided but I am interested in Management Information Systems or possibly Financial Information Systems.

As for my Five year plan, it includes the completion of my Masters degree, and the fruition of my online business, another dream of mine. For some reason, the concept of retiring from a company is depressing and crazy. Having gone through layoffs, I know jobs at companies don’t last and employee loyalties are things of the past. My strategy consists of networking with business owners, writing my business plan, and researching business grants available in the Atlanta vicinity.  As a focus oriented person, these goals will happen without a doubt because I firmly believe that “the only person that holds you back is yourself” therefore who is to stop you from achieving any of your goals?
