The "User ID" default is "anonymous". If logging on to your CUNIX account, change the "User ID" to your login name. In this example, the login name is fdn1. Then type in your password. If you like, you may also specify a particular directory to open.
Your login name will appear at the top (in this example, fdn1). This is your home directory, with a list of your files and directories which you can scroll. You can change directories by clicking on the black arrow next to the login name.
At this point you can either PUT or GET a file. PUT and GET are in reference to the MAC computer being the "home" location. To "PUT" means that you will take a file from the MAC and PUT it on UNIX. To "GET" means you will GET a file that is on UNIX and place it on the MAC. If you want to GET a file skip the next step. If you want to PUT a file continue on to the next step.
Find the file you want to PUT on UNIX. You can switch between the hard disk (Macintosh HD) and the Desktop with the top menu bar. In this example, we want to PUT on UNIX the SPSS portable file, "class.por", from the hard disk. Select the file by clicking on it with your mouse. (Note: You can only transfer one file at a time) Click "Open". You will see:
You can change the transfer format in this window. The default is MacBinary. In this example we changed the format to Raw Data. Click OK. From the screen similar to the one shown in stpe 3 above, you can see the Status (which should be "connected") information about the File (the name, the type of file and the size) and how much has been Transfered. When the amount transfered equals the size of the file, you are done!
Initially, the directory that FETCH opens is the home directory (i.e. fdn1, in this case). Let's say you wanted to GET (i.e. download) the codebook for an ABC poll in the EDS collection and from the DATAGATE you found that the path name was "/eds/datasets/abc-gop-quick92". By clicking on the black arrow, you can change directories. In this example, we have changed the directory to "datasets". (Note: In order to do this, we first selected "/", then scrolled to "eds", selected it, then scrolled to "datasets", then selected it.) Highlight the directory you want (in this case, abc-gop-quick92). Clicking on the directory will display its subdirectories.
You will see a screen that looks something like this:
FETCH, by default, will save the file on your MAC under the same name on UNIX, if you want to change it you can do it here. You can also specify a particular directory for your file. By default, FETCH will save it to your hard disk.
