The kinkajou (Potus flavus) or La Martilla as it is known in Costa Rica was my favorite animal we looked after at the Savegre Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Its mother had been killed. These animals are closely related to racoons and panda bears even though they have prehensile tails like monkeys. They are found from Mexico to Ecuador. Main threats: fur trade, deforestation.
Green and Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus) . Poison found in the glands of these frogs was once collected by native tribes by heating frog over a fire. The poison was then used on the tips of arrows. Small animals such as monkeys or birds are paralyzed immediatly however larger animals (humans!) aren't affected by such small doses. Distribution: Panama to Ecuador. Threats: pet trade, deforestation. Photo: Kenny
Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) (Status: Endangered in much of its range). Distribution: Mexico to Brazil. Threats: Pet trade, poaching for food and feathers, habitat destruction. Photo: Kenny
The Costa Ricans at my place! "Newfoundland! WOW!"
