Simple Man

© 2002 Elizabeth Marquez

V
He saw some kids waiting to cross
Traffic was too heavy to go
He knew they wouldn’t make it
The cars would never slow
A little girl was still afraid
So she took his hand to feel safe
When they got to the other side
She smiled at him and waved

Chorus
He was just a simple man
With a little dream, a little plan
He saw a deed that needed done
He wasn’t hurting anyone
With a little dream, a little plan
He was just a simple man

V
The next day he made a stop sign
Put reflectors on an old shirt
Drivers thought he was crazy
At least the kids weren’t hurt
Everyday that little girl
Would take his hand and smile
It filled his heart with joy
Doing something worthwhile

Chorus
He was just a simple man
With a little dream, a little plan
He saw a deed that needed done
He wasn’t hurting anyone
With a little dream, a little plan
He was just a simple man

V
The city had strict laws
A policeman told him one day
He took his make shift stop sign
And sent him on his way
That little girl waited a while
But he didn’t come to guard
She had to walk across alone
To get to the school yard

Bridge
That little girl was featured on the news
She was hit by a car trying to get to school
So full of anger that simple man cried
Such a tragedy to let a little girl die

Chorus
He was just a simple man
With no big dreams, no big plans
He saw a deed that needed done
He wasn’t hurting anyone
He was just a simple man
With no big dreams, no big plans
