If He Doesn't Show Up

© 2001 Elizabeth Marquez

V1
We both were leaving for college
Accepted at different schools
Didn’t want to leave each other
But staying was for fools
We laughed and cried our last night
Made love under the stars
Realized this love wouldn’t last
Being so far apart
V2
Fifteen years ago we vowed
We would meet at thirty-three
And if neither of us found love
We’d meet here at this tree
I still have half of the napkin
Where we wrote the time and place
We’ll meet at twelve noon
And we promised not to be late
C
If he doesn’t show up
That will be all right
I’d be surprised if he remembered
The promise we made that night
If he doesn’t show up
I’ll know it wasn’t right
If he doesn’t show up
I’ll get on with my life
V3
It’s ten minutes til twelve
I know I’m a bit early
I don’t want to miss this chance
So I’ll wait until twelve thirty
I feel kind of foolish
But I never forgot that pact
I admit I’m a little scared
I’m not sure how to act
C
If he doesn’t show up
That will be all right
I’d be surprised if he remembered
The promise we made that night
If he doesn’t show up
I’ll know it wasn’t right
If he doesn’t show up
I’ll get on with my life
B
As I looked around
I saw him coming close
When our eyes met
We both held up our notes
Said he was shocked to see me
We hugged through our tears
He didn’t think I’d make it
Or remember all these years
C2
Then he said
If you didn’t show up
It would’ve been all right
I’m surprised you remembered
The promise we made that night
If you didn’t show up
I would‘ve known it wasn’t right
If you didn’t show up
I would have gone on with my life
(T)
It was all so special
in between the tears
We showed up for each other
After..so many years
