Afterglow

© 2001 Elizabeth Marquez

All his fans wanted to see their favorite idol sing
So he came and gave them a show
There was no delight he lost all sight
Had a loneliness he’d never known
He knew right then he wouldn’t perform again
Cause he no longer felt the afterglow

Too deep for suppression
That memory burned an impression
With tears that flowed from his soul
Like acid rain
It resurfaced the pain
For a dream that lost it’s light long ago
He broke down and cried
For a dream that had died
He saw the last spark come and go

He thought his journey had reached the end
And the grip of fame too tight to bear
So he retreated from the stage
But loneliness was not waiting there

A little boy wanted to see his favorite idol sing
So he came and gave him a show
There were no bright lights no guitars or mics
He just sat on the bed and sang real low
Words flowed from his tongue to only the young
He finally felt the afterglow

Too deep for suppression
That memory burned an impression
With tears that flowed from his soul
Like acid rain
It resurfaced the pain
For a boy who lost his fight long ago
He broke down and cried
For a boy who had died
After seeing his last wish come and go

He found his journey had not reached the end
And the solitude too empty to bear
So he returned to the stage
Cause loneliness was not hidden there
