Barely 18

Flying stand-by going to Lejeune
I met a young Marine
Soon as we started talking
Found out he was only 18
He was leaving Parris scared
Cause boot camp was over
I remember feeling anxious
In Nam, I wasn’t much older

C
He’s leavin home today
He’s not going out to play
He’s old enough now to fight
But he’s still someone’s child
There’s so much life out there he’s never seen
He’s the few, the proud and barely 18

V
Showed me a photograph
Of the girl who said she’d wait
But his broken heart will only add
To the things that he will hate
Says his country needs him now
Patriotism’s on the rise
It’s been years since I enlisted
But still remember his pride

C
He’s leavin home today
He’s not going out to play
He’s old enough now to fight
But he’s still someone’s child
There’s so much life out there he’s never seen
He’s the few, the proud and barely 18

B
He’s gonna grow up fast
Gonna see things he wished he hadn’t
Nothin’ will ever be the same
Nothin’ but his name

C
He’s leavin home today
He’s not going out to play
He’s old enough now to fight
But he’s still someone’s child
There’s so much life out there he’s never seen
He’s the few, the proud and barely 18
