He Learned The Art

© 2001 Elizabeth Marquez

(V)
I found out again
Statements hurt more than touch
It came at a time of weakness
It hit me like a sucker punch
He chose his form carefully
Evil hidden in grace and charm
He said so much in so few words
Knowing it would bring me harm
(C1)
He learned the art
Of being insensitive and cruel
Finds pleasure in the part
With me playing the fool
Why throw a poisoned dart
To win an easy duel?
Why does he say those words?
Is he trying to be cool?
(V)
He unburied old feelings
Ones I thought were dead
But they are alive and well
Haunting me deep down instead
He knew how to call them up
And he did it on a whim
He had to exert his power
Just to leave me feeling grim
(C1)
He learned the art
Of being insensitive and cruel
Finds pleasure in the part
with me playing the fool
Why throw a poisoned dart
To win an easy duel?
Why does he say those words?
Is he trying to be cool?
(B)
When he said I didn’t matter
I thought I would cave in
But I knew if I cried
He’s do the same again
I’ve heard those words before
But didn’t do anything then
This time I was gone by morning
This time I had to win
(C2)
He learned the art
Of being insensitive and cruel
But I gave him back the part
He’s now playing the fool
He threw his poisoned dart
But I wasn’t an easy duel
I know he’ll never realize
He wasn’t being cool
