COULD I BE LIKE THAT?

It was mid December and the snow had been falling constantly for three days. It lay undisturbed as if someone had thrown a white sheet over the world. All was peaceful and silent. It was as if I was alone in a world of pure white where nothing could happen, until I heard a piercing, high-pitched sound. It sounded like nothing I had ever heard before. I felt as though I ought to find out what was going on. So I crept to my door and looked out.

I screamed, I stood perfectly still, I couldn’t move. What I had seen had shocked and scared me. I felt alone, and I rushed to the phone but when I got there I saw that the phone line had been hacked at viciously and lay in shreds, clearly visible on the dark blue carpet of the hall.

The next half an hour went very quickly. I stood staring at the phone and thinking why would someone do this. I couldn’t understand it. I was thinking about this when I heard a scraping noise. I froze and stood paralysed with fear. The creature that I had seen before must be coming back. What could I do?

Then a voice shouted through the front door, ‘Darling, can I come in?’. I suddenly realised it was my boyfriend Dan. I ran to the front door, opened it and collapsed. I fell onto Dan’s chest. It felt strange, as if it were some kind of reptile and I thought to myself – ‘this isn’t Dan’. I started to raise my head to look at whatever it was. But then, as I tried, ‘I felt a strange force acting on my cheek. I tried to move it and found it was stuck. Some kind of purple slime was coming out from the body of whatever it was. The slime was sticky and was exactly like superglue. I was stuck and had no way out. The creature whispered in my ear ‘Honey, I’m home’.

The hot breath of the creature evaporated the slime and I slowly inched away from it. For the second time that day I found I was shaking violently and sweating as if I had just spent three hours in a sauna wearing clothes. I tried to run but I fell. I felt something grab my waist and pick me up.

I turned to look at the thing that had captured me. It was gigantic, it must have been 9 feet from the ground at least, but I felt at peace with everything. My fear vanished and instead I felt happiness, love and warmth. The creature looked at me. It was turquoise in colour with big dark blue eyes that twinkled. The snow was reflected in them and I could see something else but I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. The side of his mouth curled up until he grinned the biggest grin imaginable. The creature started to laugh and said ‘Why did you fear me, when you are like me?’.

What did it mean? I was not turquoise with big dark blue eyes and with skin like a reptile that oozes purple slime. I didn’t understand. Then I thought about my life. I had never seen a mirror but the creature gave me one. I looked into it.

I wore human clothing but I was blue. A very light sky blue colour and I had turquoise eyes. My mouth was purple and big. It grinned at me and the eyes winked at me. Now I understood everything, especially weird looks I had been given by people but it didn’t make any sense. I understood why Dan had taken me to a hospital that looked like a laboratory. He didn’t want me for love; he wanted me to examine me for scientific purposes. I was different therefore it would be good for scientists to understand my species and I.

I said ‘Thank you’ and the creature said ‘Now you understand Salor that we should not be around people but only ourselves and our species.’ ‘ I am Hanfi the ruler of the group and I hope we will become better acquainted with each other’. I looked into his eyes and heard myself saying, 'Hanfi, you saved my life and I saw in your eyes a love and understanding like I have been looking for my whole life. I love you. We belong together forever’.

Hanfi stood with a shocked expression on his face, as we looked into each others’ eyes. ‘Salor’ he said ‘we can’t be together until after’. I shook violently I couldn’t understand. ‘Hanfi, darling what do you mean?’. He said ‘my life has nearly finished and we can’t marry before we die, when we know it is going to happen, or we will never come back again. I love you and we will be together in my next life. I promise’. He vanished and I sank to the ground. I sobbed until I had no more tears to shed.

When I looked up I saw, through the fountain of my tears, a human male walking up the hill towards my home. He was whistling. It was the most grotesque sound you can imagine. He stopped when he got to the door and pulled a stun gun from his pocket.

I gasped. I felt exposed. Surely he must have heard me, it was so loud. I could feel it rush through my body making my bones vibrate. It sounded like an elephant was thrashing through the shrubbery. He turned around slowly as if aware that I may be outside the house. I heard footsteps and crawled under a bush that was by my side.

The footsteps were coming closer. They stopped. I could see his shoes beneath the edge of the bush. I thought I was caught, but I stayed silent. I heard the faint rustling of leaves as he brushed against them. I could smell his aftershave. Then I saw his shirt and trousers. He was right by my side, nearly touching my legs.

After what seemed like an eternity he started moving to the right. I silently slithered through the dense shrubbery until I reached the forest. I clambered out from underneath and surveyed the area. It was silent and all was still. I got up onto my feet and dashed further into the forest. I had to get away.

The twigs crunched loudly like fresh snow beneath my feet. There was an eerie green light coming from somewhere near the centre of the forest. What could it be?

I had a tingling feeling in my feet. Was it fear or was it love? I had felt this about Dan. Had I been scared of him, or had I been in love with him? I had no answers; the questions I asked myself just didn’t make sense. I knew only one thing. I must leave the forest and find somewhere safer to hide.

I could only imagine what lay before me. The outside world loomed in front of me. I was scared, for the first time in my life I had no idea of what to do with myself. I wanted to start my life again. It was an impossible idea.

Then I felt a prickling sensation in my chest, a ray of bright white light shone out of my heart and I felt a great burden being lifted from me. The light was blinding. I heard a manly voice from behind me, but I couldn’t see anything, the light was too bright.

The light grew duller and a mist started to form. Through the cloud of mist I saw a figure approaching. I felt certain I was about to be shot with the stun gun, but the figure was blue. It was Hanfi!
