"What's In A Name?"

Yesterday when I was feeling sad about the loss of my Dad, I so much wanted to hear again him saying my name. I got to thinking that I so wished I had a recording of him saying it. And then I thought to go through my phone’s voicemails and I found that I had one voicemail from him where he began this message saying my name. I cried as I again heard his very southern voice vocalizing my name.

Names are important. Even from ancient days, much thought was put into the naming of babies before they were born, often named by how a parent was feeling about life at the time or in praise or in agony with how they were feeling about the Lord. The bible several times mentions about names and about how God knew a person’s name and called them by name, and from those verses we glean that God also knows our names and calls us by name, too.

I recall many years ago while taking a Business Communications class, that we were taught that it’s good customer service to learn people’s names and to call them by their names. People feel recognized and special when you learn their names and call them by name. It’s something I have tried to do over the years in both my professional and personal interactions. I always find it interesting when the person smiles and seems surprised that I would remember their name. Of course, some people are better at being able to remember names than others, as we are blessed with different gifts.

I’m glad I found the recording of my Dad saying my name and will treasure having it to replay.

So, what’s in a name? Acknowledgement, specialness, connection.
