"The Love Of Mother"

As I was creating Holy Week bulletins yesterday and read through the scripture again about Jesus from the cross making sure his mother would be cared for, I again felt touched by the close, tender relationship he had with his mother. In his great agony hanging on a cross, humanly we would expect his focus to be on his great agony. But he couldn’t forget about his mother and the impact the loss of him would have on her, this woman who followed along even to the cross to be near to this son whom she deeply loved.

Many of us also feel a very special and close bond with our mothers, often a bond so endearing, that it’s hard to describe in words. I recall while taking psychology classes reading a rank order of stress from loss of loved ones, and loss of a mother was high on the list, behind loss of a spouse or child.

In Jesus story there were two impending losses—his loss and her loss, the loss of them being together in an earthly presence. It’s a beautiful account of the great love between a mother and child, a love that is equally strong no matter how old our kids are.
