I have watched several documentaries over the years about cults and how cult leaders managed to garner control over others, and one of the first things a cult leader does is to get them to question what is truth and to question whom they can trust. They sow cords of distrust regarding people and sources of information that previously had just been accepted as trustworthy and true, They especially prey on those who are less strong in their own convictions, whom after being challenged as to what is truth, change their view about everything and become easy targets for manipulation. They are led to believe that the cult leader is the only one telling them the truth and the only one they should be listening to. And so they come to tune out other voices.
The aim of anyone telling you to only listen to and trust them, is to garner blind, unquestioning allegiance and control over you.
Several years ago I was manipulated by a charismatic person whom I blindly trusted, which he used to his advantage. The only ultimate good that came out of that situation was becoming less trusting of charismatic people and more keenly able to distinguish clever manipulations used to lead people away from truth—and away from God.
Blind trust should be reserved for God and God alone—fallible human leaders are not worthy of blind allegiance.
In our quest for “What is truth?”, immerse yourself not only in reading the bible, but in truly studying it and applying it to your life. Be like Solomon—pray for God’s wisdom, and He will be pleased and grant it to you. Then when challenged with “Did he really say that?”, you will know what really is truth.
“For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies—the evil rulers of the unseen world, those mighty satanic beings and great evil princes of darkness who rule this world; and against huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world.” – Ephesian 6:12, TLB.
