"A Still, Small Voice"

In danger and feeling discouraged, the prophet Elijah pled with God to take his life. After sending an angel to provide him with nourishment and journeying to the mountain of God (Mount Horeb), God told him to meet him on top of the mountain. When he did, several various calamities of nature occurred; but with each one, it is indicated that God did not cause the calamities. And after the calamities finished, God spoke to Elijah in a still, small voice. He asked him, “Why are you here?” And again Elijah spewed his words of discouragement, after which God determined to relieve him by appointing a different prophet to replace him.

In spite of his feelings of discouragement, Elijah sought out God. He had faith that God would listen, care, and help. And not only did God send his angels to care for Elijah’s physical needs, but he illustrated the error of crediting God with calamities. Rather, the still, small voice was an indication of tenderness, love, and care. Elijah sought God for help, and God relieved him of his distress.

Jesus often went off by himself to quiet, still places to pray. And the psalmist indicates to be still and know God. In the quiet, still moments we experience his still, small voice of tenderness, love, and care while more deeply connecting with God.
