Exerpts from Transfiguration

Transfiguration, or the art of changing, is very useful. Witches and wizards all over the world use Transfiguration to their advantage in many situations. A mother, for example, may have conjured up potatoes instead of tomatoes. Using Transfiguration, the witch can change the potatoes into tomatoes. If the witch is good at Transfiguration (as most Hogwarts students are), the tomatoes should be like any other. If the witch is not good however, the appearance will change wheareas the tomatoes will taste like potatoes.

Sneaky students sometimes Transfigure objects not allowed in their household to ordinary objects. A naughty child can Transfigure the illegal Coackroach Cluster into toffee, without the knowledge of his or her parents. Of course, this Transfiguration can be discovered if the parent performs a Undo Charm on the object / house or a Truth Charm on the child.

Transfiguration can be a disvantage in the wizarding world as well. Badly-trained witches and wizards will end up doing more harm than good. Witches and wizards turned bad (also called warlocks) can also use Transfiguration as a form of torture. There is one well-publicized case in the wizarding world.

A wizard used Transfiguration as a form of torture. His lawyer argued that Transfiguration is legal. He did not use the Cruciatus Curse. Thankfully, the wizard was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban instead of being freed. Transfiguration used as torture is now a crime.

Transfiguration is, however, overall Good Magic. Can you think of more reasons why Transfiguration is useful and helpful? Here are two examples.

- Transfiguration can be used as a form of battle against warlocks. Of course, warlocks can battle using Transfiguration as well. Example: A peanut-butter sandwich can be transfigured into a sharp sword.

- Transfiguration can be used if one needs an item urgently. Example: A pincushion can be quickly transfigured into a notebook.
