WHAT IS NORMAL BEHAVIOUR?

On Thursday, 11th May 2000, only 20 days before my diagnosis, I told a Clinical Psychologist at the Keresforth Centre that "Uniformity in society worries me. You can't make everybody be the same". Indeed. I stand by that statement today. What would life be like if everyone looked identical? or wore exactly the same clothes? or had exactly the same colour hair? or enjoyed exactly the same kind of hobbies? or supported the same football team?

The triad of impairments claims that "Lack of imagination" is apparent in people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome". I would argue that those who behave in this manner, and who adopt such attitudes have no imagination. They certainly don't have any tolerance. This is because anything or anyone who is different both annoys and frightens them.

Perhaps the Triad Of Impairment means that the person with Autism or AS lacks imagination in adapting to change or can't see how social events will turn out. If or when I am going to go somewhere out, I feel anxious beforehand, but usually when I get there, I am fine. I don't know why that is but it just occurs.

Those who try to enforce mass conformity, or who hate people who are different, also must be very bitter, very warped and very, very, sad individuals.

I agree with conformity if it means you are against obnoxious, bullying, anti-social and violent behaviour and I accept conformity when it comes down to respecting other people and their rights, but the way you act, talk, dress determines whether you "Fit in" or not too much as far as I am concerned. NT's and their ways of thinking aren't superior to those with Asperger's Syndrome and vice versa. They are just different to each other.

You may say that people with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism must have their own personality then? Yes. People with Autism and AS aren't carbon copies or clones of each other. They are all individuals. There are loads of pleasant, friendly and cheerful people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome and there are a minority of grumpy, miserable, nasty, depressive people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. This also applies to people with Cerebral Palsy, or Spina Bifida or deaf people, or blind people or Epileptics or GLDers or Down's Syndrome - and NT's.
