WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF JUNE 2001

After a warm, dry and sunny May, June opened on a cool, dry note. A brief shower fell on the 2nd, which was the coldest day of the month, with a maximum of 55F. The 3rd and 4th were both fine and sunny, as the weather briefly turned warmer. However, the next three days were cool with brief showers. A cold front swept south-eastwards on the 6th, followed by strong north-westerly winds. The 7th and 8th were sunny, the latter date was the sunniest date of the month but the weather remained cool until the 12th, whilst remaining generally dry and settled.

On the 13th southerly winds arrived, bringing higher temperatures. On the 14th, 70F was recorded for the first time during the month. However, whilst the weather was warmer, it was also cloudy and close under the influence of the Southerly winds. A thunderstorm broke just after 7pm on the 14th, followed by a more severe one at 1.50pm on the 15th, which deposited 11mm of rain. There was further heavy rain on the morning of the 16th, but that didn't last into the afternoon.

High pressure took hold from the 18th to the 28th, bringing a rainless spell. Winds swung to the South on the 23rd, and a warm spell occurred between the 24th and the 26th. For the first time in the month the temperature exceeded 80F, as 83F was recorded on the 25th. The 27th and 28th were also fine and sunny. There was an heavy shower on the morning of the 29th, but the 30th was a fine, sunny day.

Sunshine totals were around average. It was the driest June recorded since 1996, as rainfall was just over half of what can be expected during the month. It would have been a very dry month if the thunderstorms of the 14th and the 15th hadn't occurred. Temperature overall for the month was average. Day-time temperature was slightly below average but night-time temperature was marginally above. The generally fine and sunny final seven days offset the results of the generally cool first 11 days. Pressure was stable all month, and the lowest recorded was 1008 MB on the 16th. Like May 2001, it was overall a dry and settled month.
