A WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF OCTOBER 1997

The 1st was mild, with 66F recorded but also was unsettled with showery bursts. Fine weather was the mood for the next few days and the weather on the afternoon of the 5th was very pleasant. Then, conditions turned wet and windy with low pressure from the Atlantic. Fairly heavy rain fell between the 7th and the 9th. The 9th and 10th saw strong winds with gusts up to 35mph. The latter date was sunny with conditions quietening down later.

The 11th was non-descript but the 12th and 13th were both sunny and bright, though accompanied by North-Westerly winds. The 14th was a miserable day with heavy rain and strong winds making the weather feel even cooler than the maximum reached that day, 47F. It felt like late December or early January.

After this, an anti-cyclone, building in strength, took hold and would do so into early November. The 18th could have been mistaken for August as it was beautiful with light winds and bright sunshine. However thick fog prevailed throughout most of the following day.

The grip of the anti-cyclone continued, and high sunshine totals were recorded everyday on the 21st and 25th, and on the 28th, 29th and 31st with generally low night temperatures and frosts between the 22nd and the end of the month. Sunshine totals were high, and it ended up being the sunniest October since 1971. Temperatures for the month were slight below average overall, held down by the low night temperatures during the anti-cyclonic spell. Rainfall was 15mm below average
