WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF NOVEMBER 2003

The 1st of November was a fine, mild and sunny autumnal day with unbroken sunshine. There was a sharp shower on the morning of the 2nd. High pressure built up under an anti-cyclone from the south-west which fed in very mild winds, and the weather was quiet, mild and dull. No rain was recorded between the 3rd and the 7th, but only 3 hours of sunshine was recorded between the 4th and the 11th. On Bonfire day, the highest temperature of the month was recorded, with 61F.

The dry and mild spell came to an end on the 8th, as the anticyclone moved away and the weather turned more unsettled, as Atlantic fronts crossed the UK. Temperatures improved on the 10th though, and for the next week the weather was mild for the time of year. There was rain on the 11th, but these fronts were replaced by a deep depression, which moved south-eastwards from Southern Ireland. This brought heavy rain for most of the 14th, but passed away quickly.

The weather between the 17th and the 21st was very mild, dull and dry, under another south-westerly air stream. There were a few showers that day, but 59F was recorded on the 19th, and the temperature on the night of the 18th/19th did not fall below 52F. In contrast, however, a low over Biscay brought a spell of cooler weather, and whilst the minimum was 52F four nights earlier, the minimum temperature was 30F on the night of the 22nd/23rd.

Vigorous Atlantic depressions after the 25th brought an unsettled final week to the month. The mornings of the 25th and the 26th were both very wet, but at least on the 26th the rain disappeared and a dry afternoon with sunny spells was recorded. There was a dry interlude and weather wise, the 27th was a repeat of the 1st November, and was the sunniest day of the month. The only difference was temperatures were lower. The 28th was also dry with sunny spells. The weather turned mild again, but very heavy rain fell on the morning of the 29th. It cleared later. The 30th was a fine day with no cloud and almost unbroken sunshine, but showers were recorded that evening.

Both day and night-time temperatures were above average, and the months temperature mean was almost identical to that of November 2002. Sunshine was marginally below average. As stated, there were dull spells between the 4th and the 11th, and between the 17th and the 23rd, but very sunny days on the 1st, 27th and 30th. Rainfall was below average. The first half of the month was dry, but the rainfall totals were helped by the very wet 14th and the unsettled final week of the month. There were no snow, storms or fog recorded in November 2003.
