A complex low pressure covered the UK between the 12th and 15th, and the weather turned colder, more unsettled and overcast. A developing high ridge of high pressure drifted eastwards across the UK between the 16th and the 20th. Cold, dry but very sunny weather was seen on the 16th and 17th. A severe frost was recorded on the 17th with the lowest temperature since March. No wind was recorded on the 20th.
Changeable, unsettled weather returned between the 24th and 28th. The weather was mild but showery. A strong anticyclone brought a very sunny day for the 29th and no wind was recorded on the 30th.
Monthly mean temperatures were below average. It was the day-time temperatures which struggled the most though, being 1.4C (2.5F) below average. Night-time values were marginally below average but it wasn't as cold a November as 1993 or even 1996.
Sunshine total were well above average but were not as high as those of 1995 or 1996. This year there seems to have been be a 3-month gap for sunny months (February, May, August and November). Rainfall was below average, making it the driest November recorded since 1994. It was also a calm month with a lack of hailstorms, gales or thunder. Snow showers were recorded twice during the month.
