WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF NOVEMBER 1997

In contrast with October, November was a very dull month. It was also very mild. The 1st continued the dry spell that set in on the 17th October, but the anti-cyclone was slipping away by the following day and a rain shower fell early on the 2nd. The 3rd was overcast and dry. Then very mild weather set in. Bonfire day saw a mixed bag of sunshine and showers but was dry at night. Fairly heavy rain fell on the 8th.

Then the weather turned slightly cooler until the 11th. The 12th was a dry, sunny and mild day. From the 14th southerly winds took hold from North Africa and 62F was recorded on the 15th. This spell of mild, dull weather ended on the 19th and heavy rain fell on the 20th. The 21st was a dry, sunny, calm, cloudless day but fog enveloped the next two days. No sunshine was recorded on any day between the 22nd and the 29th. During this spell the maxima didn't vary much from the minima. Moderate to heavy rain occurred on the 25th, 27th, 28th and 29th, but the final day of the month was dry and sunny.

November 1997 was the fourth mildest November of the 20th Century, after 1994, 1938 and 1939. Novembers of 1951 and 1953 were as mild and those of 1913 and 1978 were slightly colder. The minima didn't fall below 32F, the lowest was 34F on the 22nd. The minimum temperature on the 15th was 56F. Rainfall was above average.
