Fronts brought miserable weather for the 12th and 13th, with overcast skies and heavy rain. North-Westerly winds returned from the 14th to the 16th reintroducing a pattern of sunshine and showers with below normal temperatures. In fact, the temperature didn't even reach 66F at any point between the 12th and the 27th, which is the average day-time temperature during September. Another cool, cloudy spell occurred between the 17th and 19th. The temperature didn't exceed 54F on the 17th, the lowest daytime temperature recorded during the month.
The weather remained dull, cool and quiet generally up to the 25th, though there were showers on the 24th and 25th. Thick fog was recorded on the morning of the 26th, but heavy rain fell on the 27th, making it the wettest day of the month. This was brought on by an occluded warm front heralding the mini-warm spell about to arrive. There was also thick fog on the morning of the 28th, but that soon dispersed into a lovely summer's day, 72F was recorded, the highest of the month. This was the only temperature over 70F recorded during the month and was the highest late September temperature recorded since 1992, which incidentally was a very similar September weatherwise to 2001. The 29th was dull and wet in the morning but sunny and warm in the afternoon. The 30th was dull and strong winds blew that night, heralding a stormy start to October.
September 2001 was a very dull month. It was even duller than September 2000 and the dullest September recorded since that of 1993. Daytime temperatures were well-below normal, but due to the cloudiness of the month, night-time temperatures were well above average, and overall, temperatures for the month were only slightly cooler than average, though it was still the coldest September recorded since 1994. Rainfall was slightly above average.
