WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF FEBRUARY 2003

After a cold spell at the end of January, the day-time temperatures became milder in February but there were still night frosts for five out of the six first days. In fact, night-frosts were a distinguishing feature of the month's weather. Only nine nights had temperatures above freezing. The 2nd was wet and snow showers fell between 8.30 and 9am on the morning of the 3rd. The day however, was a sunny, and the snow showers which fell did not stick or last for long.

The 5th was very sunny with a cloudless sky, but milder, moister South-westerly winds returned from the 6th, bringing cloud for the next four days. The 10th was an unsettled day, but this didn't last for long, as strong rises of pressure began on the 9th, and between the 11th and the 27th an anticyclone controlled the weather.

The 13th though was a cold day with easterly winds. The temperature that day didn't exceed 35F, the lowest maximum of the month. Night-time temperatures fell below, or were at freezing point every night between the 13th and the 23rd but during this spell, good sunshine totals were recorded on the 15th, 17th, 18th and 21st. There was low humidity on the 16th and 17th. The 21st was the sunniest day of the month, and also heralded milder weather. The rest of the month was very mild but sunshine totals varied. The 27th was overcast but a band of rain moved eastwards across all areas on the 28th.

Rainfall was well below average, and in marked contrast to that of last year, which, whilst mild and sunny, was also very wet and stormy. There were no strong winds recorded this year. It was the driest February since 1998. Sunshine totals were again well above average, and it was the sixth consecutive sunny February on record. Temperature was below average though, and it was the coldest February recorded since 1996. In particular, night-time temperatures were below average.
