WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF SEPTEMBER 2002

The first three days of the month were sunny and warm. The 4th had sunny spells and the 5th started sunny but turned cloudy later. There was a westerly/cyclonic spell from the 6th to the 9th though. Drizzle and rain fell on the morning of the 6th and rain fell early on the 7th but that afternoon was sunny. The 8th was dry with sunny spells but a depression developing over France moved north and then north-west across the British Isles, bringing widespread heavy rain for the 9th. 21mm of rain fell that day, and it didn't stop practically throughout. However, after the short, unsettled spell, no rain fell for the rest of the month, as the centre of the highest pressure stayed mainly to the north of the UK, feeding in easterly and later northerly winds.

The warmest day of the month was the 11th, with 73F and the temperature didn't fall below 59F on the night of the 11th-12th, the highest night value recorded during the month. The weather was cooler and cloudy between the 14th and 20th, and no sunshine was recorded between the 16th and the 20th. The 21st was sunny and warmer and the 23rd was fine and sunny, as was the 26th. The 27th and 28th were both overcast, but the final two days would have been creditable for August, as they saw calm and sunny weather. There was a similar late September warm spell last year as 72F was recorded on the 28th like 70F was reached on the 30th this year.

Sunshine totals for the month were around average. Daily maximum temperatures were slightly above average but the night-time temperatures were well above. Whilst warmer than average, it was not exceptionally warm. September 1998, 1999 and 2000 were all warmer.

If it hadn't been for the unsettled spell between the 6th and the 9th of the month it may have gone down as one of the driest September's on record. September 2002 was not quite as dry as September 1997 but it has been drier than any September since then.

September 1998 and 2001 both had near average rainfall totals, but whilst September 1998 was a warm month with average sunshine totals, September 2001 was cool and very dull. September 1999 was very warm but very wet in the second half and September 2000 was warm and very wet.
