WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF AUGUST 2002

It seems we have been punished for the abundant sunshine we had in April, because since then May, July and now August have been duller than average months. However, August this year was the warmest August recorded since that of 1997.

Pressure was low until the 11th, and the very disturbed weather that set in at the end of July continued. The 1st was a thoroughly miserable day with leaden skies and constant heavy rain. 27 millimetres fell until 9pm, when it stopped, and added to the flooding caused by the rainstorm of the previous day. Another severe rainstorm broke during the early hours of the 2nd, and 17.8 millimetres of rain fell but there were sunny spells later that day.

In contrast, the third was a fine summer's day with over 11 hours of sunshine, though the weather remained humid. Heavy rain fell on the evening of the 4th and on the 5th. The 6th and 7th were fine and warm. The weather turned cooler on the 8th and the 9th was another miserable, wet day, with over 15 millimetres of rain falling, and the maximum temperature did not exceed 59F, the lowest all month.

High pressure travelled from Northern France on the 11th. As a result, the weather became quieter. The 12th to the 17th was a fine and sunny spell, but also quite humid due to southerly winds. The 16th saw cloudless skies and was the sunniest day of the month, with 13 hours of sunshine. The 17th was the warmest day of the month, and the year so far, with 83F.

As the anti-cyclone settled over Scandinavia, the weather was pleasantly warm over the next few days. The 21st and 22nd were both fine and sunny, and the weather remained fine for the rest of the month, though it turned cooler on the 25th and 26th and there were a few short showers on the 23rd. The 27th had brilliant sunshine and was cloudless, as was the 28th. The final days of the month were overcast but quite warm and dry, though the 31st was cooler.

Rainfall was above average, with 80mm falling, but it was due to the very heavy falls on the 1st, 2nd and 9th. Only two millimetres of rain fell between during the final 20 days. No thunderstorms occurred, despite the weather being humid for the first half.
