WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF AUGUST 1998

This was the first sunnier than average month recorded this year since May. However, a cold front from the North-East fed in chilly North-East winds on the 1st. A transitory ridge of high pressure covered the country on the 2nd, displacing the cold front. However, another cold front brought a cloudy day on the 3rd with showers.

An anti-cyclone from the west arrived on the 4th and remained stationary. No rain was recorded until the 13th and possibly the highest temperature of the year occurred on the 9th with 83F. Night temperatures held up as well and the minimum didn't fall below 62F on the 11th. Sunshine amounts varied thought with only 3.4 hours on the 12th, as opposed to over 13 hours of sunshine on the 9th and the 11th.

The 13th and 14th were cool and showery, but the 15th was a fine summer's day with 11.7 hours of sunshine and 73F as the maximum temperature. It was also the same day as the Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland, which has killed 29 people. The 17th was fine and sunny, and the 18th and 19th were also cloudless and clear, but a transitory low blew in from the west on the 20th (My birthday) which was quite miserable in the morning with showers and an overcast sky thought the weather improved in the afternoon. The 21st, and especially the 22nd, a fine, sunny day, were a big improvement. The 23rd though was miserable particularly between noon and 2pm when torrential rain fell under a strong north wind. The 25th was generally chilly and grey but no rain was recorded to the end of the month, which remained quite warm and settled.

Sunshine totals were well above average and rainfall totals below. Temperatures, both day and night-time, were around average, but during August 1998, thunderstorms and fog were totally absent were I live.

Kevin Phillips - 11.30pm - Sunday 6th September 1998.
