WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF NOVEMBER 2000

On 5th November 2000, I wrote that the Autumn of 2000 could be a wetter Autumn than that of 1960 if the current pattern of disturbed weather continued. Well it did, and not only has this Autumn surpassed the Autumn of 1960 in rainfall amounts, but it has also surpassed that of 1852. The autumn of 2000 has now turned out to be the wettest autumn on record and November 2000 has turned out to be even a wetter month than October was. The year 2000 is on course now to be the wettest calendar year since that of 1872, yet up to September this year, only April had been an outstandingly wet month.

After the severe storm on the 30th October, unsettled conditions carried on into November. Air pressure was consistently below average all month. After a bright first day a developing depression brought heavy rain for the 2nd. The reign of this depression ended as quickly as it began. The 3rd and the 4th were fine, sunny and dry.

Another low moved in on the 5th and heavy rain was recorded that evening. For the next two days there was further misery with North-East winds and very heavy rain. 34mm of rain fell on the 7th, the wettest day of not only the month but also the year so far. No sunshine at all was recorded between the 5th and the 9th, when the low moved away. A relatively quiet spell of weather occurred up to the 20th. Fine weather was seen between the 10th to the 13th, though there were a few showers on the 11th, 12th and 16th.

The quiet spell of weather came to an end on the 21st. There was thick fog that morning but the weather turned unsettled that afternoon as Atlantic lows brought rain. Heavy rain fell on the 22nd and in fact every day had some rainfall up to the 29th. In particular, heavy rain was noted on the morning of the 25th and on the evenings of the 26th and 28th.

The next Atlantic depression tracked between Scotland and Iceland, allowing a very mild southerly airflow to occur for the final four days of the month. Whilst the evening of the 28th saw heavy rain, that day was also very mild, as 59F was recorded, the highest of the month. The minimum didn't fall below 50F at any point on the night of the 28th/29th November. The final day of the month was mild, damp and dull.

Sunshine totals were slightly below normal, but the month was nowhere near as dull as November 1997. As already said rainfall totals were over twice the average and were in marked contrast with those of November 1999, where the rainfall amount was just under 42mm. Overall the month was slightly cooler than normal but it was milder than November 1998. Nighttime temperatures were exactly average for the time of year but daytime temperatures were 1C below.
