WRITTEN NARRATIVE OF THE WEATHER OF JUNE 1999

After two very wet June's in succession, in 1997 and 1998, this year recorded a June with average rainfall. Also, after the duller than average previous two Junes, this year saw a sunnier than average month. The first day was warm and pleasant but thunderstorms and very wet weather broke out on the 2nd, which gave such a foul day on that date last year and which proved to be the wettest day of 1998. This year it wasn't as bad and more rain fell in the south than in the north of England. The 3rd and 4th were also unsettled but the 5th was a fine day with almost unbroken sunshine. Despite this, caused by a transient ridge of high pressure, further wet weather occurred on the 6th and 7th. The latter felt anything like a June day, and it made you think that the term "Flaming June" might have been meant in a cursory sense! The maximum was 54F and heavy rain fell for most of the day. The north-wind made it feel colder.

From the 9th an anticyclone slipped in, giving a fine sunny day, but temperatures remained disappointingly low until the 12th as winds were from a northerly direction. From the 14th the high pressure (After a fine sunny day on the 13th) drew in warmer winds from the continent and temperatures increased. Between the 15th and the 22nd a fine summery spells of weather occurred and the highest temperature of the month, 77F, was recorded on the 16th. On the 19th an active front brought cloudier weather but it only lasted that day. Another anticyclone brought further fine weather between the 23rd and the 26th and the sunniest day of the month was recorded on the 25th, and was the highest sunshine totals recorded since 17th May 1998.

A vigorous depression brought heavy rain for the 27th and more rain fell on the 28th but the 29th was a fine, sunny day. Cooler weather occurred on the final day of the month.

Temperatures overall were slightly below normal, being 1F below mainly due to the cool and wet first 12 days. Between the 13th and the 26th it was mainly fine, sunny and warm. Night-time temperatures were around average, but you will have to go back to 1991 to find the last significantly cooler than average June.
